  6. India’s new Education Minister’s ‘fake degrees’ cause a stir on social media https://gulfnews.com/world/asia/indi...dia-1.64326744 This image has been resized.Click to view original image Quote: Dubai: India’s newly-appointed minister of Human Resource Development (HRD) has come under the scanner after it was reported that he had two degrees from an international university not recognised or registered. Ramesh Pokhriyal was sworn in as the HRD minister in the second Modi government and soon a news report shed light on his two doctorate degrees that were received from a university in Sri Lanka. According to a news report by Indian news website India Today, in the 90s, the Open International University (OIU) of Colombo conferred two doctorates to him for his contribution in literature and in the field of science. However, according to the report, OIU is neither registered as a foreign university nor as a domestic university in Sri Lanka, the university grants commission of Sri Lanka confirmed. On social media, users found it surprising that the man in charge of promoting the level of education in the country had questionable credentials. Others also spoke about two dates of birth that conflicted in Pokhriyals’ records. Tweeps, however, were disappointed that Pokhriyal was the second education minister with allegedly fake degrees, after Smriti Irani served as the HRD minister from 2014 to 2016. Irani’s official applications show conflicting information about her educational qualifications and she claims to have a degree from Yale University.

I thought the flat belongs to a cat lover but i see no cat litter box around unless cat is trained to use toilet. Most likely belong to a malay couple.

  22. A man was driving along Keppel Road, near Tanjong Pagar, on Wednesday evening (Feb 17) when he saw a group of over 20 cyclists hogging the road. Stomper Brandon shared with Stomp footage of the cyclists taken from his in-car camera at around 10pm. "I saw this group of cyclists, kings of the road, taking up two lanes," he said. "There was another group of over 20 cyclists behind this group. "The estimated number of cyclists along Keppel Road that night was around 50." According to a Facebook post by the Singapore Cycling Federation, cyclists should only cycle in groups of five. The Singapore Cycling Federation added that groups of cyclists should also stay at least 3m away from each other. Under the Road Traffic Act, those who ride a bicycle, power-assisted bicycle, trishaw or tricycle on a road must ride the bicycle, power-assisted bicycle, trishaw or tricycle as near as practicable to the far left edge of the road. https://stomp.straitstimes.com/singapore-seen/group-of-over-20-cyclists-act-like-kings-of-the-road-near-tanjong-pagar

  27. Hongkongers should be wary of marketing hype touting the health benefits of air fryers, the Consumer Council warned on Wednesday, noting that potentially cancer-causing compounds could still be created from preparing food with such products. In a study of 12 air fryers, the watchdog found frozen thin French fries cooked in half of the tested appliances contained high levels of a naturally occurring, “probably carcinogenic” substance known as acrylamide, which is formed when some foods such as potatoes are processed at high temperatures. A 2015 study published in the peer-reviewed Journal of Food Science found that air frying potatoes – as compared to deep frying them – appeared to decrease the formation of acrylamide significantly, but Consumer Council testing found that the levels were often still well in excess of EU benchmarks. Fries cooked in the HK$999 (S$171) Imarflex IHF-26E, for instance, had the highest amount of acrylamide – 7,038 micrograms per kilogram, or 13 times the EU benchmark of 500 micrograms per kilogram. The model that produced the second-highest amount of the substance was Denki’s DAF-35 (HK$688), at 1475 micrograms per kilogram, and the third-highest amount came from ecHome’s AF1400BK (HK$960), with 1471 micrograms per kilogram. Both figures were almost three times the European benchmark. The chairwoman of the council’s research and testing committee, Nora Tam Fung-yee, urged food lovers to be mindful of their intake of air-fried food, even though the cooking method was generally healthier than deep frying given it used less oil. “Air frying is a kind of roasting. It’s still not very healthy because it may create carcinogenic compounds like acrylamide, particularly when you air fry thin French fries at a high temperature or for a long time,” Tam said. “You should not eat air-fried food very often, and also watch the size of servings carefully.” Professor Nora Tam Fung-yee, of the Consumer Council, speaks about the results of its air fryer tests on Wednesday (Feb 17). PHOTO: Facebook The council said the risk of generating acrylamide could be reduced by adjusting the cooking time and temperature. In separate tests, researchers prepared French fries with the Imarflex model using a lower temperature or a shorter frying time, and the amount of acrylamide dropped to a level that was within EU standards. Imarflex told the council that its suggested cooking temperatures and times in its instruction booklet were only for reference, adding that its recommended time for French fries was intended for ones with a thicker cut, such as potato wedges. Denki did not respond to the council’s findings, and the Post could not contact it for comment. Meanwhile, ecHome said its suggested cooking time for fries was 12 to 20 minutes, while the watchdog had cooked the fries for 23 minutes. But the council pointed out that its manual instructed users to extend the cooking time by two to three minutes for frozen food. For overall cooking performance, researchers found the 12 products – which were priced between HK$298 and HK$2,080 – were quite similar when used to cook chicken drumsticks and spring rolls in accordance with instructions provided by the fryers’ manufacturers or their agents. But when it came to French fries, the disparities between the tested products proved significant. Two models left most of the fries undercooked, while two others cooked them unevenly. Meanwhile, researchers also discovered safety risks with some products. Three models – Proluxury’s PAF052017, Harrow’s HT-AF1200 and Midea’s MF20B – had insufficient insulation between live wires and the machines’ surfaces, which could result in short circuits. The three companies told the council they would strictly control or improve their manufacturing procedures to bring their products in line with safety standards. “We did tests and found some have safety problems, but it’s not so serious that you have to stop using the air fryers,” Tam said. “We just want to remind the consumers that it’s important when you use these air fryers, you know there might be some safety hazards.” Still, she added, users should make sure their children do not touch the machines.

  34. At least 10 people have died and countless others are facing life-threatening conditions as Texans prepared to enter day four of frigid weather without heat and power. A growing concern is for those people in the storm's path with serious health conditions. "That’s concerning not only for temperature but also for people who are on oxygen or do need electronic devices for their health," said Comfort Homes Director of Operations Kasey Breidenthal, according to KTAB, the CBS affiliated TV station in Abilene, Texas In the Dallas suburb of Richardson, a woman who relies on an oxygen machine had to be taken to a local hospital and then a dialysis center where the machine was charged, the Texas Tribune reported. Conversely, carbon monoxide poisoning has become a major health concern. At least two deaths have been reported and in Houston alone, Texas' largest city has seen 300 carbon monoxide poisoning cases, according to the Houston Chronicle. The rise in cases has come about from people trying to stay warm in running cars in garages, BBQ pits and generators used indoors. The power problems have also impacted water pressure levels across The Lone Star State. An estimated 7 million people were told to boil their water or stop using it entirely as homeowners, hospitals, and businesses grappled with low pressure, broken water mains and burst pipes. South of Austin, in the city of Kyle, residents were asked Wednesday to suspend water usage until further notice because of a shortage as disruptions to water systems also hit Houston, Fort Worth, Galveston and Corpus Christi. As the state struggles for warmth and survival, lawmakers locally and nationally directed anger at the state's Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT), which according to its web site "manages the flow of electric power to more than 26 million Texas customers -- representing about 90 percent of the state’s electric load." Gov. Gregg Abbott served notice of a pending investigation. Bill Magness, the CEO of ERCOT attempted to explain the reason for his agency's actions in an interview with KEYE, the CBS affiliate in Austin. "These outages, while they’re extremely difficult, and we’re trying to get them to end and get power back to people as fast as we can, are a controlled method of making sure we don’t lose the system, to make sure we don’t have a much bigger catastrophic event on the system," said Magness The under-fire executive expressed empathy for his fellow Texans. "Having to live without power during these kinds of conditions is horrible, absolutely." Still, he stressed that if not for the outages, the state could be facing a larger crisis. "The catastrophic outcome I’m talking about is if we had let the system go into a stage where a blackout would happen, we wouldn’t be talking about when are we going to restore the power, when are we going to turn it back on," said Magness. "We would be talking about rebuilding portions of the electric system. We wouldn’t be able to do this in days. Magness was not able to say definitively when the power would resume, but he hoped many customers would see at least partial service restored by later Wednesday or Thursday. More than 3 million homes and businesses were remaining without power for the third day of a historic winter storm that is pummeling the state. https://www.foxnews.com/us/texas-energy-company-cant-say-when-power-will-be-back-as-millions-left-to-deal-with-brutal-winter-storm

  36. Firstly, there no pain, no blood in urine, all i have is a few min of slight discomfort on the side of my rib. which happen once every few 1 or 2 month First exp going to surgery was WOW, cleaning with speical soap at home before the ops then to the hospital to change clothes at 8.30am , sign more form and confirm my identity again and more check and more measurement then confirm my identity again then i as lie down on the bed while they push me from room to room, confirm my identity again then talk to me, do i know why am i here, where is the parts then confirm my identity again, i look at the clock it was around 10.20am then finally push to the theatre room then confirm my identity again for the last time. i was given a gas mask by anesthesiologist to breath in slowly and out and look at the front (celling), after about 5 to 6 breath in and out, i suddenly knock out, by the time i wake up, i was in recovery room which i am drifting in and out of consciousness. by the time i was awake and aware it was 3.30 or 3.45pm in the General ward (as confirm by family member) me always think how can ppl suddenly can knock out of breathing in some gas. now i know. i suddenly knock out. and i dont even know, all i know is after i fully awake Before the surgery, i told them to take picture of the urine bag aka catheter . the first picture of my catheter few hr later. me was thinking wai so good no blood haiz, i talk too fast after the that it just got worst. i was thinking not so bad, a bit only the next 6 to 8 bag fully of urine is all these color Was told to stay in hosital for another day on the 2nd day afternoon, doc was right as i got confuse on the 2nd day night in hospital, i guess due to the amount of blood i lost. doc told me i might need a blood transfusion as i lost too much blood. but heng i got better on the 3rd day morning and blood transfusion is not needed then finally allow to home as the blood got lesser. FYI my IV drip was remove on the 1st day night or 6 to 7am 2nd day morning and i was back on the IV drip on 2nd day night due to the amount of blood i lost. i think that all i remember as i got confuse
