  1. Former Hong Kong actress Cherie Chung may have retired from acting for a long time, but to her legion of fans, she is still a goddess. Late on Tuesday (Feb 9), she posted on Weibo photos of her friend, Catherine Ku, holding an early birthday celebration for her. Chung, who turns 61 on Feb 16, wrote in English: "Thank you for the most yummy chocolate tart." Her fans wished her a happy Chinese New Year, with many saying she is still their goddess and that she is still as pretty. Ms Ku also posted the same photo on social media and wrote: "Lunch with my goddess!" In January last year, Chung appeared in singer Sammi Cheng's photos on social media. Cheng praised Chung for her natural beauty. Chung has said before that the key to her youthful looks lies in maintaining a positive and cheerful outlook, enjoying life every day, and getting sufficient sleep and exercise. The star of Hong Kong films such as Once A Thief (1991), An Autumn's Tale (1987) and Peking Opera Blues (1986) left show business after marrying businessman Michael Chu in 1991. He died of cancer at age 53 in 2007. The couple have no children.

  2. Edited image of a woman cuddling a man against the backdrop of the Sunway University building. Photo: Coconuts A private university in Malaysia lashed out yesterday after its student body was recognized as No. 1 in something unrelated to academic performance – sugar babies. Sunway University publicly objected to a stain on its “moral fabric” without identifying the offending article, but it came out hours after a dating site ranked it first among 10 universities for students available for pay-to-play relationships. “We are truly disappointed about a recent article about a company that challenges the moral fabric of our community and of our youth,” university rep Elizabeth Lee said in the statement. The company was Sugarbook, a dating site the connects sugar-friends, and the article was not one but many. “We condemn their attempts to encourage youth to partake in immorality, normalise this notion and disregard the mental health impact this causes,” Lee added. The statement came after Sugarbook issued an attention-grabbing news release claiming the ranks of Malaysian sugar babies had swollen to 300,000, most of whom were female university students in their 20s. Subsequent news reports linked the rise to the pandemic. Infographic by Sugarbook People reacting to Sunway’s statement suggested that it should turn down the scold and increase the empathy. Some wrote that the cost of attending a private university such as Sunway could be one reason they topped the list of “immoral” education bodies. “While it may be ‘immoral’ for your establishment, you need to take a deeper and wider look into the cost of living and today’s society,” Ranessa Theyakaraja wrote in reply. At Sunway, a typical degree course costs around RM60,000 (US$15,000). According to the university’s website, despite the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, no tuition relief has been offered due to “considerable extra investments” for hosting online classes. “This is what happens when you don’t reduce tuition fee during MCO,” fellow Facebook user Erik Goh chimed in. 14. Three short weeks ago, Bon Chon chicken broke the Thainet with images of a succulent duck-shaped fried chicken that promised sweet relief from the usual steamed bird served for Chinese New Year. As newgen Thai-Chinese, Russarin Lertpojmanee wanted to be among the bold new order by pre-ordering the South Korean-inspired franchise’s crispy Wai Jao Chicken, but when it was arrived to her mother’s Bangkok home this morning, she soon received photos of the atrocity that arrived “What I expected to get vs. what I got. Even mom complained about it, my grandmother and dad won’t forgive me,” Russarin wrote online. “Well, at least they stuck a gold sheet on it and gave us crispy noodles for consolation.” She told Coconuts Bangkok that one of the reasons she wanted the THB688 chicken was because her oldest son would actually enjoy the ritual meal as he really loves Bon Chon. Although she was aware of the small-print disclaimer reading “this picture shown is for advertisement purposes only,” she thought it couldn’t possibly be this bad. “This morning my son came to me and kept telling me to not let anyone eat it up after the ritual and save some of the chicken for him. I don’t want to imagine whether he’ll still want to eat the bird once he actually sees it,” she said. https://www.facebook.com/ceo.starbeauty/posts/2726950307556008 Some others who took the deep-fried plunge into trashing tradition shared similar photos of their grisly birds. Many made fun of the skinny brown chicken and thought how their ancestors would feel about it. Chayapat Aong Him thought it resembled a demon chained and bound under a magical seal. “I like how they have a gold sheet stuck on it, like they have the chicken under a spell,” Chayapat Aong Him wrote. “It’s like this chicken committed some sins against its parents and after dying became one of the tall, hungry demons from Thai folklore, so Bonchon had to strike it down with magic.” “It’s good that my family is socially distancing today, or my grandma will be shaking right now,” Yanika Lertpotmanee wrote. As of noon, Russarin wrote online that Bonchon, having noticed her viral post, called to tell her that the brown color came from its sauce and that they would send her a new chicken. She turned down the offer as the traditional ritual was over. She ain’t mad at them, she said, and will continue to eat their chicken.

  21. CNY Tanjong Pagar accident: Woman badly burnt trying to save boyfriend from burning car, says friend SINGAPORE - A friend of one of the five victims in Saturday's horrific crash at Tanjong Pagar Road said a woman tried to save one of them and got burned doing so. On Saturday (Feb 13) morning, five people were killed and one sent to Singapore General Hospital (SGH) after a car, a BMW, slammed into the front of a shophouse there. The Singapore Civil Defence Force was alerted at about 5.40am. Mr Akira Chan, 21, a friend of the victims, told The Straits Times one of the victims ran a popular Korean eatery in the area. He said: "They were at the restaurant around the time and were going back when the car skidded. "The fiancée of one of my friends in the car tried to open the door to save him and was burned as a result." ST understands she suffered 80 per cent burns to her body and is being treated at the SGH burns unit. Mr Chan, who spoke to ST at the accident scene, said his other friends who were at the restaurant at the time witnessed the accident and were assisting in police investigations. The family members of the victims arrived at about 10.30am, and were believed to have identified the bodies before they were taken away to the mortuary. They were heard wailing from about 30m away, across the road from the site of the crash. They left the scene at about 11.30am and declined to speak to reporters. A young woman among the group was seen breaking down by the side of the road, and the other family members appeared distraught. Two tow trucks were also at the accident site. The five bodies were taken to the mortuary in two police hearses. The first, carrying one body, arrived at 11.10am, while the second, with the remaining four bodies, arrived at 11.25am. https://www.straitstimes.com/singapore/courts-crime/cny-tanjong-pagar-tragedy-woman-badly-burnt-trying-to-save-boyfriend-from
