LKY is a socialist but a pragmatic one. thats why he dont support setting up a generous social welfare net as he knows that lt-wise, a generous social welfare net will cripple a small economy. but he failed to realize that the minimal welfare net he set up is not sufficient to support the fringes of society. GKS and HSS r the true visionaries of sgp for without both of them, the sgp economy would have remained a small entrepot economy. the 2 brought sgp into the world of manufacturing and international high finance. the current leaders r a joke with their casino economy. i m not too optimistic that sgp can even emerge as a technological leader in sea, let alone internationally, as envisioned by ah heng in his sgd20bln speech. no coherent manufacturing or technological policies were formulated since 1995 and ah heng expect sgp to narrow the gap within 5 yrs is a pipe dream. even tiongland, with the whole might of its economy, is unable to close the semicon gap with the us in 10 yrs without resorting to industrial espionage, coercion and throwing money.
