  3. A restaurant and a customer recently got into a heated argument after the latter was allegedly told if she "can't afford then don't eat". The reason for this? She bought a set meal coupon meant for four diners and wanted to bring two extra children along. The woman had purchased the coupon, which offered a discounted price of $59.68 instead of the usual price of $116 at San Guo Kao Yu, through Fave. As the coupon did not indicate that only four people could use the deal, the woman wanted to make a booking for four adults and two kids, reported 8World. When she called the restaurant on March 19, a male employee explained that the four-person set meal was only meant for four diners. "But the platform didn't state that," the woman told 8World. "I didn't know before I bought the coupon." The staff explained that there were limited seats in the restaurant. If they were to allow large groups to dine in and each group were only to order a four-person set meal, it would negatively affect business. As such, the woman recounted, the staff asked her to pay an additional $10 per extra diner. The mention of additional charges left her confused, so she called again afterwards and spoke with the manager. After explaining the situation to the manager, the other allegedly uttered: "Can't afford then don't eat." This ticked off the customer who ranted: "This isn't about the money, this is about his attitude. I just wanted to make a reservation." A female employee clarified with 8World that the eatery indeed had a dining policy where the four-person set meal could only be served to a group of four. Groups with more than four diners could choose between ordering additional dishes or paying an additional $10 per extra head. Meanwhile, the manager admitted to scolding the customer, but explained that it was because she had accused the restaurant of "taking her money". "Only when the customer dines at the shop does Fave give us the money that was paid," he said. "All she did was calling us to ask. We haven't even charged her, so how can she say we're taking her money?" "Whenever customers ask how many people can come and dine, we'd always hope they would order more dishes instead," he said. He claimed the woman was informed of the options as well. However, the woman said she was not offered such a choice and the employee who first answered her call had insisted that she paid the additional charges. According to the manager, the restaurant had asked Fave to indicate the dining policy in the coupons' terms and conditions when the deal was first launched. He hoped the platform would quickly rectify the situation to prevent similar incidents from happening. The deal's terms and conditions have not been updated at the time of writing. In the meanwhile, the customer warned other users would pay more attention to the fine print of such deals and advised them to clarify the details with restaurants before buying the coupons.

  5. SINGAPORE — A 27-year-old man who had graduated from the National University of Singapore (NUS) returned to the university campus to illegally enter the hostel room of a girl whom he followed on social media and steal a vibrator. Chua Chang Rong later returned the vibrator he had stolen by trespassing into her hall and room. He also began to harass her through a Telegram chat, offering to be her "friend with benefits" and to "pleasure" her. Chua pleaded guilty to one count each of theft, criminal trespass and harassment on Tuesday (23 March). One more count of a criminal trespass will be taken into consideration for sentencing. District Judge Teoh Ai Lin called for a Mandatory Treatment Order suitability report to assess Chua's suitability for the sentencing option, which would have him receive mental health treatment in lieu of jail time. Chua got to know about the girl, who is in her 20s, when he was still a student at NUS. He started following her on Instagram as he found her attractive. He found out that she resided in a hall within NUS through her Instagram updates. The two did not know each other personally. The victim and her hall cannot be named due to a gag order. Trespassed when victim was overseas From 30 December 2018 to 13 January 2019, the victim travelled overseas and posted about her travels on Instagram. Sometime between 3 and 9 January 2019, Chua entered the hall she stayed in by tailgating a student who had access to the building. Based on his previous experience of staying in an NUS hostel, the accused knew that most students did not lock their room doors and they left their names on their doors. After looking around the hostel, he found the victim’s room marked with her name – it was unlocked. He entered and sifted through her personal belongings, including clothing and lingerie. In one of her drawers, he found a pink vibrator and felt sexually aroused. He stole the $40 item. After the victim returned from her travels, she was unable to find the vibrator but assumed that she had simply misplaced it. On 18 July 2019, Chua decided to return the vibrator to the room. He saw that she had uploaded an Instastory of herself at work at 10am. At around 11.29am, he trespassed into the hall and rummaged through the girl's belongings again. He saw that she had two new vibrators and fiddled around with them. He also photographed them. He placed the pink vibrator into the same box as the other two. Contacted victim through Telegram On 22 July 2019 at around 10pm, Chua felt sexually aroused thinking about how he had entered the victim’s room and looked through her belongings. He decided to message the victim on Telegram via a secret chat after searching for her Instagram handle. He identified himself as Bobby. In the messages, Chua told the victim that he had returned her sex toy as he “wanted to surprise (her)”. He also texted that he noticed she bought new sex toys. When the victim asked him who he was, Chua simply said, “Before you block me, I want to propose something for you (:” He asked if she wanted to be "friends with benefits", saying that he could help pleasure her since he "already (knew her) dirty little secret”. “And now you know mine :)... We can get to know each other real wellllll....," he texted. He added, “Don’t ignore me :(... I’m the only one you can talk to about this”. The victim did not reply to the messages, and Chua later deleted most of them. The victim was alarmed by texts and afraid that he had entered her room. She informed NUS campus security, who reviewed the CCTV footage covering the walkway outside the victim’s room and spotted a man entering her room on 18 July 2019 at around 11.29am. She later lodged a police report. Chua's lawyer Raphael Louis said that his client was ashamed for what he did and took a lot of time to reflect on what he did. He has since gone for five sessions of counselling. A private psychiatrist had deemed that Chua had fetishistic disorder. An Institute of Mental Health psychiatrist diagnosed Chua with adjustment disorder with depressed mood, with a high sex drive with possible paraphilia. Chua will return to court on 7 May.

  7. SINGAPORE — Antibodies that protect against Covid-19 wane at different rates, lasting mere days in some individuals but remaining in others for decades, a Singapore study has found. The findings by scientists from Duke-NUS Medical School, the National Centre for Infectious Diseases (NCID) and the Agency for Science, Technology and Research (A*Star) Infectious Diseases Labs show that not everyone who has recovered from Covid-19 is immune from reinfection. And if immunity provided via vaccines wanes like naturally-produced antibodies from a past infection, then annual vaccinations could be necessary to prevent future outbreaks of Covid-19. Highlighting these in a press release on Wednesday (March 24), Duke-NUS, NCID and A*Star said the research was important for policymakers planning vaccination programmes and pandemic exit strategies. But they added that further studies would be needed to clarify the findings as vaccine programmes are rolled out. The study was published in international medical journal The Lancet Microbe on Tuesday. READ ALSO HSA begins review of Sinovac Covid-19 vaccine for use in Singapore, asks Chinese firm for more data The researchers followed 164 Covid-19 patients in Singapore for up to nine months, analysing their blood for neutralising antibodies — the proteins responsible for defending cells from Covid-19 pathogens. Data collected from these patients at the six-month mark was used to establish a machine learning algorithm that allowed the scientists to predict how the protective antibodies wane over time. At nine months, data was collected from the patients again to validate the predictions. The findings suggested that the antibodies’ longevity can vary greatly, and it is important to monitor this at an individual level, said Professor Wang Linfa from Duke-NUS’ Emerging Infectious Diseases Programme, who is a corresponding author of the study. “This work may have implications for immunity longevity after vaccination, which will be part of our follow-up studies,” said Prof Wang. Besides studying neutralising antibodies, the study also looked at patients’ T-cell immunity. READ ALSO Moderna Covid-19 vaccine to be used at 4 new vaccination centres from March 17 T-cells are a type of white blood cell that works with antibodies to eradicate pathogens such as the Sars-CoV-2 virus that causes Covid-19. The researchers found that individuals may still be protected from Covid-19 if they have robust T-cell levels, even if their level of neutralising antibodies is low. Associate Professor David Lye, Director of the Infectious Disease Research and Training Office at NCID, who is also a corresponding author of the study, said the presence of T-cell immunity provides hope of longer-term protection against Covid-19. More studies and time for epidemiological and clinical evidence are required to confirm this, he added.
