  11. By now, you would have heard that Singaporeans are some of the most sleep-deprived people in the world. Here’s a recap: We are the third most sleep-starved population, after Tokyo and Seoul, in a 2014 survey of 43 cities. And in a more recent online poll conducted in 2018 across 12 countries, Singapore took the second spot after Britain. In fact, close to 60 per cent of Singaporeans’ ability to sleep well has been directly impacted by the pandemic. And more than a third experience negative impact on their stress levels, ability to sleep well, mental/emotional health, sleep and work routines. MORE HURDLES TO A GOOD NIGHT’S SLEEP Close to three in 10 Singaporeans say that they now sleep less each night. More specifically, Singaporeans average 6.8 hours of sleep per night, down from seven hours during the previous survey released in 2020. According to the National Sleep Foundation, those aged 18 to 64 need seven to nine hours of sleep. We’re still sleeping less on weekdays – and even less so during the pandemic, averaging 6.6 hours on weekdays (versus 6.7 hours in 2020) and 7.3 hours on the weekend (versus 7.5 hours in 2020). It is no wonder that only less than half of the respondents in Singapore feel that they get enough sleep at night, and only 21 per cent feel well-rested most of the time when waking up in the morning. If you're trying to get in more sleep by going to bed early, here's a tip: Don't have a window of time but fix specific times for sleeping and waking, said Dr Han Hong Juan, consultant ear, nose and throat (ENT) surgeon and medical director of The ENT, Voice & Snoring Clinic at Mount Elizabeth Hospital. Sleep duration aside, Singaporeans’ sleep quality is also a nightmare. According to the same Philips survey, which was conducted from Nov 17 to Dec 7, 2020, 40 per cent reported waking up during the night. Where they previously had no issues, 35 per cent now have difficulties falling asleep; meanwhile, 21 per cent began having problems sleeping through the night. What can you do if you often wake up in the middle of the night? "If you still fail to fall asleep after 20 to 30 minutes, get out of bed and do something calming (for example, listen to relaxing music) until you feel drowsy to sleep again," suggested Dr Han. While more than one in 10 Singaporeans are still being kept awake by their mobile phones and tablets, and their sleep environment (16 per cent), stress is now the biggest sleep disruptor for more than one third of the respondents. And stress comes in the form of work responsibilities for nearly six in 10 people, financial challenges for more than half, family issues for a third, and their own/family’s health for three out of 10 Singaporeans. To help you fall asleep better, Dr Han recommended penning your worries and troubles in a journal to avoid ruminating about them in bed. Also, try leaving at least a couple of hours between eating and going to bed, he added. DO YOU HAVE INSOMNIA? You might have hazarded a guess that insomnia rose during these unprecedented times and indeed it did. Twenty-seven per cent of Singapore adults – which went up from the 25 per cent in last year’s survey – currently experience insomnia as a medical condition that impacts their sleep. Of these insomniacs, the largest group – about a third – came from those between the ages of 35 and 49. Interestingly, nearly half of insomniacs also have obstructive sleep apnoea, a sleep disorder where your air flow is momentarily cut off by collapsed throat muscles. "If you experience a persistent inability to fall asleep and consistently have a good night’s rest, you should definitely see a doctor," said Dr Han. "This is particularly so if you experience daytime fatigue, and have difficulty staying awake or doing routine tasks. It could be an underlying sign of a sleep condition like insomnia or obstructive sleep apnea, which needs to be treated."

  21. The Mac ‘N Cheese Zingerito. Photo: KFC Singapore Eating mac and cheese from a bowl is now obsolete thanks to KFC’s latest invention — the Mac ‘N Cheese Zingerito. Get ready to lick the cheese dripping from your fingers in their newest concoction packed with all-time fan favorites mac and cheese plus their spicy chicken patty in a soft-toasted tortilla when it launches tomorrow at 80 outlets islandwide. The Zingerito, a portmanteau of KFC’s Zinger chicken burgers and “burrito,” costs S$5.90 and for a few dollars more includes a drink, fries, chicken, and mash potatoes. It is also available for delivery and takeaway. Sadly, the mac and cheese wrap will not be available at Changi Business Park, North Point City, Seng Kang, Singapore Polytechnic, Singapore Zoo, and Yew Tee Point.

Well, I think we thought too well of the United States, we thought the US side will follow the necessary diplomatic protocols. For China it is necessary to make our positions clear. So, let me say here, that in front of the Chinese side, the United States does not have the qualifications to say that it wants to speak to China from a position of Strength. Salvage! USA really poor! Tiongland already trumped over them!

  26. SINGAPORE - One of Singapore's most iconic and catchiest National Day songs, Count On Me, Singapore, has become embroiled in a copyright tussle. Indian composer Joseph Mendoza has been accused of copying the 1986 song, but he is claiming he wrote his version, We Can Achieve, in 1983. He also said that he found out about Count On Me, Singapore only a few days ago. The two songs are virtually identical, except for small changes to the lyrics such as swopping "Singapore" for "India" or "Mother India". Videos of what appear to be students in India singing the latter version have recently surfaced on social media. Singapore's Ministry of Culture, Community and Youth (MCCY) said in a Facebook post on Thursday (March 18): "Given that the two songs, and their lyrics, are practically identical, and that we hold the copyright to Count On Me, Singapore, we are puzzled by this claim. "We have thus contacted Mr Mendoza to invite him to substantiate his claims. We are still waiting for his response." In a statement to the media on Tuesday, Mendoza claimed that 250 orphans had performed the song in 1983 after he had written it while teaching music at the Bal Bhavan orphanage in Mumbai, where he is based. He also claimed that the original tapes of his composition were swept away in the 2005 Mumbai floods. "The only living proof I can offer you are the 250 orphans who first learnt it in 1983 and all the orphans at Bal Bhavan in the successive years too," said the 58-year-old, who claimed he was a graduate of the Musicians Institute in Hollywood, California. Although he acknowledged similarities between the two songs, he insisted that there was no way he could have known about Count On Me, Singapore as there was no Internet in those days. He said he sold the rights to the song to a Christian book and record store, Pauline India, and recorded it in 1999. MCCY noted in its Facebook post that Pauline India has since publicly acknowledged that We Can Achieve "appears to have been substantially copied from Count on Me, Singapore". Indian composer Joseph Mendoza has been accused of copying the 1986 song Count On Me, Singapore, but he is claiming he wrote his version in 1983. PHOTO: JOEY MENDOZA/FACEBOOK It added: "Pauline India has also clarified that they were unaware Count On Me, Singapore had been Singapore’s national song since 1986. They have since apologised and removed the song from their platforms." The ministry has accepted the apology and believes there was no ill will intended on the part of either Pauline India or the school. "Whilst Count On Me, Singapore is one of our most beloved national songs, we are also happy that it seems to have been well appreciated in India, with the video showing teachers and students in a school performing the song, and expressing their love for their own country." Count On Me, Singapore was composed by Hugh Harrison, arranged by Jeremy Monteiro and performed by Clement Chow. Harrison, who is Canadian, hit back at Mendoza on Wednesday in the YouTube comments of the song: "The fact that he is claiming now in 2021 that he is the original creator of the song, implying I copied the song from him, is a direct attack on my integrity and professionalism and for that he could be sued for slander and/or libel. "As it stands now, I have written (to) him and given him the opportunity to rescind his claim and am awaiting his response."

  30. The European Medicines Agency (EMA) has said it has so far found no causal link between the vaccine and the incidents. The World Health Organization has also said there was no proven link and people should not panic. In Germany, seven people aged 20 to 50 have been diagnosed with CVT up to 16 days after vaccination as per Monday https://www.reuters.com/article/us-health-coronavirus-vaccines-sideeffec/explainer-how-worried-should-we-be-about-reports-of-blood-clots-and-astrazenecas-vaccine-idUSKBN2B92E2 there is no such thing as coincidence when u have so many people with blood clots in so many countries after vaccination. nb, 30 minutes observation time means indemnifying the govt from liabilities liao. smlj compensation also is based on suka suka.

  32. For the uninitiated, the term "omakase" translates to "I'll leave it up to you" in Japanese — exactly what one needs to do when enjoying this Japanese-style multiple-course meal. Just sit back, relax and watch the chef prepare the food before your very eyes. Diners are not given a detailed menu prior to their session so each and every dish that is presented to them will be a surprise. Unsurprisingly, such a meticulously curated meal can be quite an expensive affair. For example, an omakase dinner at the cult favourite Sushi Kimura can set you back about $300 to $400. However, this does not mean that there are no wallet-friendly options available. There are a few places in Singapore that do offer decent omakase meals for less than $69++. While they're not cheap by any means, these restaurants below are your best bet if you want to enjoy a premium experience for a reasonable price. Amazing Hokkaido Amazing Hokkaido has made the news a few times for unique creations such as their towering ikura (salmon roe) bowls, "long" seafood sushi and uni (sea urchin) and negitoro (tuna) sushi "hotdogs". This time around, they are back with an affordable omakase experience for just $69++. https://www.facebook.com/watch/?v=1139391149831657&t=0 The meal comes with 20 different items such as tempura, various skewers and their house special uni hotdogs. If you're keen on splurging, they also have a $89++ set too which comes with 22 items. Address: 30 Robertson Quay #01-16, Riverside View, Singapore 238251 Hana-Hana Japanese Restaurant This establishment was opened by the same folks behind Teppei Japanese Restaurant, which became popular for their $50 omakase a few years ago. https://www.instagram.com/p/CMgUlJWHY2l/?utm_source=ig_embed Similarly, Hana-Hana Japanese Restaurant has affordable omakase sets too which are priced from $38++ to $88++. Their cheapest option comes with 15 courses which is a pretty decent amount of food for the price point. Address: 1 Tras Link, #01-17, Orchid Hotel, Singapore 078867 Miraku Miraku prides themselves on their fresh ingredients that are flown in from Japan daily. The small restaurant can only fit around 15 diners at a time, so be sure to make your reservations early. https://www.instagram.com/p/CLWHYI_ngDP/?utm_source=ig_embed They have a variety of omakase sets available on their menu and the Raku Sushi Couse, which is their lowest priced option, is going for just $68++. This is only available for lunch and features a seasonal starter and chawanmushi (steamed egg) as well as nine types of nigiri sushi (raw fish sushi), soup and a dessert. Address: Address: 3 Pickering Street, #01-31, Nakin Row, Singapore 049660 Ryo Sushi Ryo Sushi, one of the more well-known omakase spots on this list, first gained popularity for its shockingly cheap $18 omakase set. https://www.instagram.com/p/BK9wgUMDekH/?utm_source=ig_embed Unfortunately, this is no longer available. However, they still have relatively pocket-friendly omakase options. Their lunch set is available for just $38++ and contains 15 courses. Address: 1 Tras Link, #01-06, Orchid Hotel, Singapore 078867 Rakuya For the more adventurous, you can consider visiting Rakuya which fuses various Asian flavours into their food. https://www.instagram.com/p/Byw0BowHjyp/?utm_source=ig_embed Delicious options that have graced their omakase menu before include yuzu kaya toast and mapo chawanmushi. The cheapest omakase option is only available during lunch. It costs $48++ and features an appetiser, cold dish, chawanmushi, a hot dish, a main, a mini rice bowl, soup and a dessert.
