  25. SINGAPORE – More help for Singaporeans through Budget 2023 is being considered amid the uncertainties and challenges the year will bring, said Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Finance Lawrence Wong on Saturday. “The Budget is coming very soon on Feb 14, and so we are also now discussing and thinking through how we can provide more help for Singaporeans to address concerns about cost of living,” he added. “The bottom line is that we must never allow our challenges or problems to divide us. That’s not how we do things in Singapore.” He was speaking at the People’s Association’s Indian Activity Executive Committees’ (IAEC) 45th anniversary celebration dinner held at the Fairmont Ballroom at Raffles City Convention Centre. The event saw more than 1,000 in attendance, including grassroots leaders and community partners who were there to celebrate the past work and contributions of the IAEC’s volunteers in promoting social cohesion among the Indian community as well as racial harmony with the wider Singapore community. Also in attendance were Transport Minister S. Iswaran and Senior Minister of State for Communications and Information and Health Janil Puthucheary, who are advisers to the IAEC’s council. DPM Wong said the IAEC have played an important role in keeping the community united throughout the Covid-19 pandemic, rallying the Indian and wider community together. He said that it was because of the nurturing of close bonds in the community that Singapore continues to remain a high-trust society. He added: “And it is this deep reservoir of trust that has enabled us to get through what we hope will be the worst of the pandemic. “And that’s why today we are in a much stronger position – we are more united than before, and our bonds are stronger than before. And this is in stark contrast to many other countries in the world, where the pandemic has further divided and fractured their societies.” DPM Wong urged Singaporeans to continue working together to tackle the challenges ahead amid an uncertain global outlook given the pandemic, war in Ukraine, potential energy and food disruptions, and inflation and cost of living concerns. He said the Government has been doing its part to help Singaporeans during these trying times and will continue to do so, saying Singaporeans will “never walk alone”. For instance, Singaporean households are able to claim $300 worth of Community Development Council vouchers from Jan 3, after up to $700 had been given to adult Singaporeans in GST vouchers in December 2022, he said. “Our problems should never cause us to splinter or fracture,” he said. He added: “Instead, our approach, whenever we face an issue or a problem or difficulty, is to rally together and to confront the issues head on as one people. And each time we do so, we learn from the experience, we become stronger and we become more united. “That’s how Singapore has developed and grown all these decades.”

  26. best public transport in the world Hong Kong public transport train mtr bus A study has declared Hong Kong as the city with the best public transport services in the world, considering volume of traffic, network density and infrastructure quality. This puts the city over places like Singapore and Tokyo, both of which are known globally for having some of the most connected and efficient public transport systems. Leading this ranking, drawn up by the consulting firm Oliver Wyman, Hong Kong now has a transport network that is considered very affordable, with a high density of stations and accessible to all throughout its jurisdiction. However, not everything is perfect: the network is not available 24/7, as is the case in some other cities, and there are no dedicated mobile applications that allow people to move seamlessly from one mode of transportation to another. Note that Helsinki, which comes fifth in this ranking, has the cheapest multimodal network in the world, with the possibility of traveling by bus, streetcar, metro, train and even ferry for a mere €3 per ticket. (Image credit: Melvin Tham/Unsplash) Singapore comes in fourth, while Tokyo — famed for its public transportation services’ efficiency — places seventh. At the bottom of the entire ranking come Nairobi (Kenya), Riyadh and Jeddah (Saudi Arabia). The Oliver Wyman report shows that Europe is, not surprisingly, at the forefront when it comes to sustainable mobility. Many cities, particularly in Scandinavia, have already electrified their offer, while encouraging walking and cycling. Oslo, for example, can be considered the world capital of electric bicycles, and has also imposed numerous car-free zones. Similarly, Amsterdam and Helsinki are leading cities in terms of sustainable mobility, gradually moving towards carbon neutrality. Stockholm metro station (Image credit: Norman Tsui/Unsplash) This study analyses the public transportation systems of 60 major cities around the world, based on several criteria, such as the size and quality of their infrastructure, their attractiveness, their social impact, and the maintenance and innovation of the network. All data was collected by Oliver Wyman, in partnership with the University of California, Berkeley. Read on to find out which cities, apart from Hong Kong, boast the best public transport networks in the world. Here’s the top 10 list of cities with the best public transport networks in the world 1. Hong Kong 2. Zurich 3. Stockholm 4. Singapore 5. Helsinki 6. Oslo 7. Tokyo 8. Paris 9. Berlin 10. London

  29. This is why we should all learn cardio-pulmonary resuscitation (CPR). An SBS Transit bus captain stopped the bus and performed CPR on a passenger who had collapsed. Stomper J shared photos of the incident that happened on Tuesday (Jan 3) at about 9pm. "I would like to commend the bus captain of SG6262J on service 974 for performing CPR on an unconscious passenger after he collapsed on the bus," said the Stomper. "Thank you for helping to save a life!" The Stomper recounted that the man had suddenly collapsed on the bus when it was going towards Pioneer MRT station. "The bus captain rushed to check on him and informed the control centre about the incident and they called for an ambulance. Afterwards, she sought assistance from another passenger to move the man to a comfortable position as he was stuck in a corner. She then performed CPR on him until the ambulance came." In response to a Stomp query, Mrs Grace Wu, Vice-President (Special Grade) of Customer Experience and Communications at SBS Transit said the bus captain was driving along Pioneer Road North when a passenger collapsed onboard. "Our bus captain immediately stopped the bus to check on him before she contacted our Operations Control Centre to activate an ambulance," she continued. "She subsequently administered CPR on him after learning that he had no pulse. She continued with the CPR until paramedics arrived. The passenger was then conveyed to the hospital. "We thank fellow passengers, in particular the man in army uniform, who had stayed behind to render assistance during the incident." Mrs Wu added: "Our bus captains are trained in CPR and we are heartened that this bus captain had put her knowledge to good use to help our passengers in an emergency." When contacted by Stomp, the Singapore Civil Defence Force said it received a call for assistance along Pioneer Road North at 9pm and conveyed one person to Ng Teng Fong General Hospital. The Stomper said he did not take a photo of the bus captain on the night of the incident as he was in shock, but he took a photo of her driving the bus the night after. "I saw her the next day. I hope she gets the recognition she deserves," said the Stomper.
