  1. My mother is Malay and father is Indian. I have more Malay blood in me than some of the racists in Malaysia, some of whom have no Malay blood at all, being converts. I was educated in a Malay school and went abroad to study. I never applied for any scholarship as I didn’t want to. My parents were humble government servants who worked hard and saved. They supported me. On the weekends and during summer holidays, I worked in restaurants, laundromats, retailers (including liquor shops), pubs to make ends meet. I made it. On coming back to Malaysia, I obtained a government job. After a number of years, I resigned. I joined the private sector and did well. I speak and write Bahasa Malaysia and English well. I did my Form Six in Malay in my country. While still in government, I attended Biro Tata Negara (National Civics Bureau) courses. That was when I personally witnessed the brainwashing by the government that was going on. Instead of unifying the people, the policy was to create Ketuanan Melayu. Everyone could see it including the Malays. But no one did anything. There were private conversations, that’s it. That’s when Malaysia started to fall. That was more than two decades ago. Renouncing my citizenship About 10 years ago, I left Malaysia, with my wife and children. I was offered a government job by a country abroad, believe it or not. My family migrated. I renounced my Malaysian citizenship after that. It was a very hard decision to make. I surrendered my identity card, which was cut by the National Registration Department officers in Putrajaya. To be honest, the officers were very polite, and kept asking me repeatedly if that was what I wanted. “Are you sure? You are so qualified and doing well, why?” I told them yes as I had already obtained a citizenship of another country. I liquidated all my assets, closed all my businesses and bank accounts and left. My friends were shocked, asking me not to do it as I was successful and already doing well. Why move? But my parents supported and encouraged me. Today the same friends tell me what a wise decision I had made. Why I decided to leave In my decision to leave Malaysia, I thought not of myself or my spouse. We were comfortable and already among the upper middle class. I thought of the future of my children and grandchildren. I thought about the kind of society in which I wanted my next generation to grow up. I thought about the lies, corruption, religion and the racism prevalent in my country. I did not want my future generation to be a part of a system that is dishonest. A system full of hypocrites. Today, when I look back, I only have this to say: Thank you, God, for helping me make the right decision. I am recognised in my host country as an individual without any baggage. No one asks me or my family about my religion or race. There is no column in any application asking me what religion or race I belong to. I do what I want. I only answer to God, not to some human beings and not to any religious leaders who are mere human beings. I can go to my friend’s house regardless of their race or religion and have a meal. If there is food which my religion forbids me to consume, my friends know and respect that. The cause: power-hungry politicians In Malaysia it’s all about race and religion. It has become so toxic that, in comparison, apartheid is a bed of roses. The politicians after the third prime minister Hussein Onn created this situation to remain in power. The racist policies and the culture of polishing boots have cost Malaysia dearly. Can it be repaired? Reset? I doubt so but I do hope I am very wrong. But I am sure the current set of leaders just cannot do it. They have no will or want. Period. As for Malaysia’s foreign missions, I find that diplomats can hardly speak English, let alone write a decent speech in the language. I just shake my head in embarrassment, quietly. Malaysia’s education system has failed miserably. Let me tell you why it has descended to this level. Because you allow incompetent politicians to make decisions. And some of these politicians send their children abroad to boarding schools whilst the common man’s children attend local and religious schools. Many others who also refuse to return Where is the white knight in Malaysia? Is she or he coming? Look at the continuous fiasco, more so with the current devastating floods in the country. Look at the suffering of the people. The people didn’t vote for this. There are many Malaysians comprising all races, including Malays, mostly professionals and businessmen, who refuse to return. When I ask them why, they say they do not want to serve an incompetent regime. They, too, are sick and tired. The non-Malays abroad tell me they would rather be a recognised minority there than be second class citizens in their own country. In overseas, there is no quota whatsoever in educational institutions, all intakes are based on merit. The poor are given help regardless of race or religion. Now, all my family members are citizens in different countries, which are their adopted homes. Agreed, not everything is perfect, but I can tell you it’s way much better and we all sleep well at night. We don’t have to get up worrying which politician is going to make a ridiculous statement filled with hatred and bigotry. Malaysia has become very divided after the 90s. All we can do is for some form of divine intervention to get things right. Have faith. https://www.msn.com/en-my/news/national/i-left-malaysia-and-i-don-t-regret-it-here-s-why/ar-AASbbMo?ocid=entnewsntp&pc=U531

  6. SINGAPORE: The electricity tariff for households will increase by an average of 5.6 per cent for the January to March period next year, compared with the previous quarter, SP Group said on Thursday (Dec 30). The rise is due to higher fuel costs, it added. Excluding Goods and Services Tax (GST), the tariff for households will go up from 24.11 cents to 25.44 cents per kWh for the quarter ending Mar 31, 2022. Including GST, the rate will be 27.22 cents per kWh. Quarterly household electricity tariff. (Graph: SP Group) This increase will mean the average monthly electricity bill for families living in four-room Housing Board flats will increase by S$4.70 before GST, said SP Group. This is the fourth consecutive quarter of increase, following a decrease in the January to March period this year. “Around 95 per cent of Singapore’s electricity is generated using imported natural gas at prices indexed to oil prices,” it added. "Over the past few months, a confluence of recovering economic activity, severe weather events, and a series of gas production outages have sent global energy market prices significantly higher. These factors have raised electricity prices in many markets." SP Group reviews the electricity tariffs every quarter based on guidelines set by the Energy Market Authority (EMA). The electricity tariff consists of four components – energy costs paid to the generation companies, network costs and market support services fees paid to SP Group, as well as market administration and power system operation fees paid to the energy market company and power system operator. SP Group said the energy costs component is adjusted quarterly to reflect changes in the cost of fuel and power generation. The fuel cost is the cost of imported natural gas, which is tied to oil prices by commercial contracts. The cost of power generation mainly covers the costs of operating the power stations, such as the manpower and maintenance costs, as well as the capital cost of the stations, SP Group said. City Energy also announced on Thursday that the gas tariff for households will increase by 1.17 cents per kWh to 20.21 cents per kWh, before GST, for the January to March period. The increase is due to higher fuel and non-fuel costs, compared to the previous quarter, they said. City Energy reviews the gas tariff based on guidelines set by the EMA. If you, too, are already making preparations for CNY, which falls on Feb 1, 2022, it's a good time to start marking all the auspicious dates on your calendar. Apart from Li Chun, which is regarded as the luckiest day to deposit your money, read on to find out the optimal times for you to discontinue work, start work, spring clean and visit your loved ones. When to deposit your money For the uninitiated, Li Chun in Chinese culture signifies the beginning of spring. This often falls around Chinese New Year. In 2022, Li Chun starts on Feb 4 and ends on Feb 19. Many believe that depositing money at the right time during the Li Chun period will bring good fortune for the coming year. According to Way Fengshui Group, these are the luckiest times for each zodiac sign to deposit money into their bank accounts. Fengshui blog Feng Shui Beginner says that this depends on your zodiac sign too. If your sign conflicts with a particular date, you should avoid ceasing or starting work on that day. 16. SINGAPORE — A woman who consumed a product containing potent ingredients later developed diabetes and other serious effects, the Health Sciences Authority (HSA) warned on Thursday (30 December). After taking "X-Gout" for one year, the woman in her 40s developed Cushing's syndrome, a life-threatening steroid-induced condition, said HSA. In addition to "X-Gout", HSA urged the public not to buy or consume four other products containing potent substances that had caused serious adverse effects in consumers. The products were sold on local e-commerce and social media platforms, and HSA said it has worked with the administrators to promptly remove the affected listings and issued warnings to the respective sellers. The five products are: INFOGRAPHIC: Health Sciences Authority Two products caused Cushing's syndrome in two persons On the "X-Gout", a friend of the woman had purchased the product via Shopee Malaysia on her behalf, and encouraged her to use it for her knee pain. The woman gained 22 kilograms over a few months, experienced shortness of breath and swelling of the lower limb. She was diagnosed with diabetes upon consultation with her doctor. HSA tested the product and detected four medicinal ingredients: dexamethasone, a steroid; indomethacin and piroxicam, which are both non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs; and paracetamol. Long-term unsupervised use of steroids such as dexamethasone can cause increased blood glucose levels, which may lead to diabetes; Cushing’s syndrome, characterised by a round face or "moon face" appearance, and upper body obesity with thin limbs; and other serious adverse effects. Meanwhile, a man in his 40s also developed Cushing’s syndrome after taking "dcr Natural Herbs Honey Enzyme" for about six months. When he stopped using the product, he experienced withdrawal symptoms such as loss of appetite, lower energy levels and subsequently, rashes on his body. HSA tested samples of the product, and found it to contain paracetamol. It has not ruled out other adulterants or steroids present in other batches of the product, since Cushing’s syndrome is associated with long-term inappropriate consumption of steroids. (Clockwise from left) KMS2 Dark Chocolate Mocha Botanical Beverage, Speedy Slim Capsules (Black) and Speedy Slim Capsules (Gold). (PHOTO: Health Sciences Authority) Side effects experienced in weight-loss products HSA also received feedback from a member of the public who experienced side effects such as fast heartbeat, thirst, and dry mouth after consuming "KMS2 Dark Chocolate Mocha Botanical Beverage" for a few days. The sellers had made claims that the product “speeds up fat burning by inducing heat, helps soothe digestive systems and boost metabolic cycles to reduce appetite and is safe without rebounding weight”. HSA tested the product and found them to contain sulphamethoxydiazine, an antibacterial medicine, and amethocaine, an anaesthetic. It also seized the products "Speedy Slim Capsules (Black)" and "Speedy Slim Capsules (Gold)" following feedback from the public that there were unapproved slimming products being sold on Instagram. These products made exaggerated claims such as “target at breaking down stubborn extra fat”, “cut off starch absorption”, and “losing weight and clearing fat”. Both products were tested by HSA and were found to contain very high levels of sibutramine, a prescription-only weight-loss medicine that has been banned since 2010 due to an increased risk of heart attack and stroke. Other serious adverse effects include insomnia and hallucinations. Advice for consumers of the products HSA has advised consumers of the five above-mentioned products of the following: X-Gout: The product contains a potent steroid, and consumers should see a doctor as soon as possible. Discontinuation of steroids without proper medical supervision can cause serious withdrawal symptoms such as fatigue, confusion and low blood pressure, especially when the product has been taken for more than a few weeks. dcr Natural Herbs Honey Enzyme: Consumers should see a doctor as soon as possible, as there may potentially be potent ingredients in other batches of the product that have not been detected. KMS2 Dark Chocolate Mocha Botanical Beverage, Speedy Slim Capsules (Black), Speedy Slim Capsules (Gold): Consumers should stop taking these weight-loss products immediately and consult a doctor if they feel unwell or are concerned about their health. Those who need help managing their weight should consult a doctor, dietitian or a healthcare professional. HSA has also advised consumers to be wary of products that carry exaggerated claims or deliver unexpectedly quick results, such as fast weight loss or immediate pain relief. These products may contain potent ingredients that can seriously harm one's health. Consumers should also exercise caution when buying such health products online or from well-meaning friends, as they cannot be certain where and how these products were made and whether they have been adulterated with harmful ingredients. HSA said that adulterated products are often manufactured under poor conditions with no quality control, and different batches of the same product may contain variable amounts of ingredients and/or different types of adulterants. Consumers needing help to manage chronic medical conditions should always consult their doctor or pharmacist. HSA has also told all sellers and suppliers to stop selling these five products immediately, otherwise they are liable for prosecution and may face up to 3 years' jail and/or fined up to $100,000. Those who have any information on the sale and supply of the illegal products may contact HSA's Enforcement Branch at 6866-3485 during office hours (Monday to Friday) or email [email protected].

  20. SINGAPORE - More than four in five diners at hawker centres in Singapore are now returning their used crockery on trays, a marked improvement from before strict table littering rules took effect in September this year. Revealing the results ahead of the enforcement of similar rules this Saturday (Jan 1) at foodcourts and coffee shops, Senior Minister of State for Sustainability and the Environment Amy Khor said: "Our observations are that diners are now generally more aware about their responsibility to clean up after themselves, and are willing to do so." Prior to imposing $300 composition fines on second-time offenders and court fines of up to $2,000 on repeat offenders, only one in three diners at hawker centres returned their trays. Dr Khor was speaking to reporters on Thursday after visits to the Kopitiam foodcourt in Hillion Mall and the Choh Dee Place coffee shop at Block 163A Gangsa Road, where she spoke to diners and stallholders about the importance of returning used crockery on trays. Tray return will be compulsory from this Saturday at foodcourts and coffee shops, following a two-month advisory period. Only one person has been issued a written warning to date for flouting tray-return rules at the 114 NEA-run hawker centres throughout Singapore About 400 coffee shops and foodcourts have taken up the NEA's Clean Tables Support Scheme to install more tray-return facilities, Dr Khor said on Thursday. Under the scheme, coffee shops and hawker centres can be supported for up to 50 per cent of the costs they incur, capped at $2,500 per premises. There are about 1,120 coffee shops and 220 foodcourts in Singapore. Some 99.6 per cent of them have tray-return facilities in place, compared with just 20 per cent in July, Dr Khor added. Safe distancing ambassadors and the Singapore Food Agency's (SFA) enforcement officers will also be deployed at foodcourts and coffee shops to advise diners to clear their trays, crockery and litter from tables. Table litter includes used tissues, wet wipes, straws, canned drinks, plastic bottles and food remnants. Dr Amy Khor visits the Kopitiam in Hillon Mall on Dec 30, 2021. ST PHOTO: ALPHONSUS CHERN On cleanliness during the two-month advisory period, Dr Khor said: "Patrons, stallholders and coffee shop operators find that the environment is much cleaner, and there is less pest nuisance. "Operators were initially concerned that patrons may find it troublesome and they would lose business, but they realised this is helpful, as they are able to turn-over clean tables faster and cleaners can focus on sanitising tables." But Dr Khor assured the public that enforcement will not be taken against those clearly unable to return their trays, such as the frail elderly, people with disabilities and young children. But their family members or dining companions should help them to do so, she said.

  30. SINGAPORE — A man who trespassed into Victoria School claimed that he had slept in a conference room when he was caught by the school’s security officer. Visen Raj Govindarajoo, 24, who was also a security officer, was fined $1,500 on Wednesday (29 December) after he pleaded guilty to one count of wilful trespass and one count of being drunk in a public place. Prior to the school incident, a highly intoxicated Visen was walking along Bencoolen Street on 2 April when he smacked the buttock of a 31-year-old woman, who was selecting a drink from a vending machine. When the woman turned around, she saw Visen walking past in a drunken manner. Her husband had also heard the ‘smacking’ sound and confronted Visen, who claimed that he could have accidentally hit the woman. The husband called the police, who found that Visen was unable to answer any questions due to his drunken state. Accused caught by school security officer In the school incident, a female security officer on duty saw Visen trying to find his way out of the school compound. She approached him to ask why he was in the premises and Visen replied that he had slept in a conference room there. She reported the incident to a security executive who viewed CCTV footage of the incident, which showed that in the wee hours of 3 July, Visen climbed over the side gate of the school. Visen was unable to account for his presence there. The executive lodged a police report on 7 July and Visen was later called up by the police for investigations. In mitigation, Visen said that he committed the offences without realising them. "But I’m not here to justify myself.” He added that he had been affected by the charges as his passport was kept by the police. As such, he was unable to go home to help his family, whose house has been affected by a flood in Kuala Lumpur.

  31. SINGAPORE — A maid from the Philippines who stole nearly $15,000 of her Singaporean employer’s valuables was caught with the loot in her luggage eight days before she was due to return to her home country. Castro Meldy Aloquina, 32, was jailed for five months on Wednesday (29 December) after she pleaded guilty to one count of theft as a servant. Employed by the 46-year-old Singaporean from June last year, Castro was tasked to perform household chores. She was paid $662 monthly, or $692 if she did not take off days. Castro began stealing from her employer from January this year. While she was doing her daily chores, she would steal items from her employer’s wallet and drawers. She knew that the key to locked drawers was kept in a bag and would fish out the key to commit the offences. She would return the key after each time. On at least 50 occasions between January and November this year, Castro took $14,733.35 worth of valuables, including 14 pieces of jewellery and cash in nine different currencies. She pocketed $4,225 from her employer, which she then used to buy 12 pieces of gold jewellery. Sometime before November this year, Castro decided to stop working for her employer and return to her home country on 28 November. Eight days before the maid’s scheduled departure, her employer checked the maid’s belongings and found the stack of foreign currencies, household items and jewellery. The employer confronted the maid, who admitted to stealing the items. After conferring with Castro’s employment agency, the employer called the police. She told the police that she had recorded the maid’s confession. Castro was arrested and all the items were recovered including the 12 pieces of gold jewellery she had illegally bought with her employer’s money. Two partial payment receipts for jewellery with a total of $290 paid were also recovered. The amount was refunded by a jewellery shop and the refunded cash seized by the police. Speaking through an interpreter, Castro told the court that she was remorseful for her actions and wanted to return to the Philippines and her two children as soon as possible. She added that her eldest son had suffered a fracture after falling from a tree. “I would like to take care of my son. I also have a daughter back home. I am pleading for leniency and a light sentence,” she added. For stealing items belonging to her employer, Castro could have been jailed up to seven years, and fined.
