  5. https://www.ft.com/content/24090cf8-9b6c-45b9-9a8d-41ca2450194d US agency questions AstraZeneca Covid-19 vaccine trial NIAID says outdated information may have provided ‘incomplete view’ of efficacy. AstraZeneca might have included outdated information from a clinical trial of its Covid-19 vaccine, a US health agency said on Tuesday, potentially throwing previously published positive results into doubt. The National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases said it had been notified by the trial’s data and safety monitoring board that “it was concerned by information released by AstraZeneca on initial data from its Covid-19 vaccine clinical trial”. “The DSMB expressed concern that AstraZeneca may have included outdated information from that trial, which may have provided an incomplete view of the efficacy data,” the NIAID said. It said the board had also notified the US Biomedical Advanced Research and Development Authority and Anglo-Swedish pharmaceutical company of its concerns. The NIAID said it had urged AstraZeneca “to work with the DSMB to review the efficacy data and ensure the most accurate, up-to-date efficacy data be made public as quickly as possible”. AstraZeneca and Oxford university did not immediately respond to a request for comment early on Tuesday. The statement came after results from a long-awaited American trial of the Oxford/AstraZeneca vaccine were released on Monday. More than 32,000 volunteers took part, mostly in the US, but also in Chile and Peru. The trial showed the vaccine was 79 per cent effective at stopping symptomatic Covid-19 and 100 per cent effective at preventing people from falling seriously ill. The company said there were no safety issues regarding blood clots. Earlier reports of side effects from taking the vaccine, including a rare combination of blood clots, bleeding and low platelets, had prompted at least 16 European countries to suspend use of the jab. Most have now resumed its use, after the European Medicines Agency said it found no link between clotting and the vaccine. The drugs watchdog left the door open to a link between the vaccine and the rarer combination of side effects, but has said throughout the crisis that the vaccine’s benefits far outweigh its risks.

  7. SINGAPORE — An associate director of Singapore Management University (SMU) was charged on Tuesday (23 March) with accepting more than $470,000 in bribes. Christopher Tan Toh Nghee, 43, was handed charges relating to accepting bribes over 50 occasions from three men to further their business interests with the local university. He allegedly received bribes amounting to $472,000 between August 2017 and November 2019. The three men were also charged on Tuesday. They are International Alliance Marketing director Kenneth Lum Hsien Loong, 44; CJ Synergy director Cher Kheng Than, 43; and Assetualize managing director Jeffery Long Chee Kin, 43. Tan faces 50 charges for offences under the Prevention of Corruption Act for accepting the bribes, while Lum, Cher and Long face 35 charges, seven charges and eight charges respectively for offering the bribes. Tan and Cher also each face one charge of giving false information to the Corrupt Practices Investigation Bureau (CPIB), as well as one charge each for intentionally obstructing the course of justice. Tan allegedly lied by telling the CPIB that the purpose of the funds given to him by Cher from June 2019 to October 2019 were meant for the repayment of Cher's loan from him. Tan also allegedly deleted an electronic note titled “Income by month” from his mobile phone. This note supposedly contained records of the monetary sums he received and expected to receive from the other three men from March 2018 to December 2019. Cher is accused of deleting an electronic note containing records of funds he gave to Tan from June 2019 to October 2019, and WhatsApp conversations between himself and Tan. He is also said to have lied that the funds to Tan were repayments of loans. All four will return to court on 20 April. If convicted of a corruption offence, each of the men can be jailed up to five years, fined up to $100,000, or both. The maximum imprisonment term for each offence of corruption can be increased to seven years if it is in relation to a matter or contract with the government or public body, or a subcontract to execute work comprised in such a contract. For giving false information relating to corruption offences, a person may be jailed up to a year, fined up to $10,000, or both. A person convicted of intentionally obstructing the course of justice can be jailed up to seven years, fined, or both.

  15. Don Don Donki opening outlets at Suntec City and Downtown East SINGAPORE – Japanese discount chain Don Don Donki is set to open two new outlets this year at Downtown East and Suntec City. This will make the brand's 10th and 11th outlet in Singapore. Rapidly expanding in Singapore, the Downtown East outlet will be Don Don Donki's first full outlet in the East, an upgrade from their Changi Airport Terminal 3 booth-kiosk setup in 2020. Taking over the food court space, the outlet will be situated beside McDonald's at Downtown East and had been in the works since December 2020. Christine Ng-Ling shared on a Don Don Donki Facebook Group the Downtown East outlet's latest look, with other members sharing that the shelving and stocking of products are going on in the space. While dates for the Downtown East outlet's opening have yet to be released, the brand had recently teased the opening on their Facebook page. Spotted by Lily Wong on the same Facebook Group, was also a Don Don Donki renovation at Suntec City, which is located in the West Wing near Tokyu Hands. Renovation works are still going on, and the dates for opening have yet to be announced. Don Don Donki currently also has outlets at Orchard Central, the chain's 24-hour branch, Harbourfront Centre, City Square Mall, Square 2, Clarke Quay Central, 100AM, JCube, and JEM.

  18. KUALA LUMPUR (March 20): Parkson Corp Sdn Bhd (Parkson) will shut down two of its department stores this year while “mulling the closure of a third store”, The Edge Malaysia reported this week. The weekly’s report stated that one of the stores set to close is the 18-year-old Parkson Plaza OUG in Kuala Lumpur “when the lease comes to an end in mid-2021” and “the other outlet is a non-performing store”. In Penang, Parkson 1st Avenue “may also shut in mid-2021 due to declining patronage”. Last year saw the closure of 35-year-old Parkson Holiday Plaza in Johor Bahru and the outlet in Terminal 1 Seremban. Both were reported to be “underperforming”. At the end of December last year, Parkson had 41 stores, a decrease from 44 stores as at December 2019. Parkson in Malaysia saw two consecutive quarters of negative growth and anticipates “that the current quarter will also see a contraction”. The Edge wrote that “Parkson, like most retailers, saw its revenue take a hit when the Movement Control Order 2.0 was imposed beginning Jan 13, ahead of the peak Chinese New Year sale period”. “We project that our department store sales will still hover around negative 40% for 1Q2021 (January-March),” Parkson chief operating officer Law Boon Eng told the business publication. “Hopefully, by the end of the second quarter, interstate travel restrictions will be lifted, which will help to increase consumer spending,” he said. “Barring unforeseen circumstances, we should remain narrowly positive for FY2021,” Law added. “Though the outlook for 2021 is still uncertain, the market is picking up. The availability of vaccines and the ongoing process to vaccinate the majority of the population in Malaysia augurs well for quicker recovery, though it will take time to vaccinate enough of the population to reach the targeted 70% to 80% herd immunity,” he explained. For the current fiscal year, Parkson will continue to stay focused on rebuilding its sales and bottom line and keeping an eye out for new opportunities. “We will continue to improve operating efficiencies in our stores during the Covid-19 recovery year of FY2021/22 and tap further on the omnichannel [approach] to achieve sales growth. We will also need to address the supply chain disruption,” Law said. Parkson Corp is Lion Group’s retail arm.
