  10. (Reuters) - More than half of the world's airline pilots are no longer flying for a living amid the plunge in demand during the coronavirus pandemic, according to a new survey, and those that are still flying feel less valued by their employers. A poll of nearly 2,600 pilots by UK-based GOOSE Recruitment and industry publication FlightGlobal, released on Thursday, found only 43% were doing the job they had trained for, with 30% unemployed, 17% furloughed and 10% in non-flying roles. Many pilots that are still flying have faced deteriorating working conditions. Hong Kong's Cathay Pacific Airways Ltd, for example, instituted permanent pay cuts of up to 58%, and Turkish Airways and Singapore Airlines Ltd have temporarily lowering salaries. "We can see the effect the pandemic has had on employed pilots too," GOOSE Recruitment chief executive officer and founder Mark Charman said in a statement. "Large numbers are feeling insecure about their jobs, an increased number are planning to look for new roles this year as well as many feeling less valued by their employers." For the unemployed pilots in the survey, 84% said it was due to the pandemic. Before COVID-19 hit, there had been widespread pilot shortages that had driven up demand for aviators and led to improving pay and conditions. Now, 82% of unemployed pilots would take a pay cut for a new opportunity, the survey found. For those that have kept their jobs, pilots in Europe reported being the most stressed by COVID-19, with respondents citing the risk of catching the virus, disjointed rules and the possibility of being placed in quarantine during a rotation as among their concerns. Forty percent of pilots said their mental health had been affected by the pandemic, with the figure higher among younger pilots. "The amount of stress and anxiety the pandemic has caused me has permanently scarred my outlook on life," one surveyed pilot said.

  17. Burial grounds are more an issue then Columbariums! It all depends on whether burial ground exhumation are done properly? Under layer soil movements can cause "plot" sifting! I read sometime ago some burial ground, soil movement caused the remains/bones to sift from 1 plot to another. I think it was reported in some chinese newspaper on burial ground exhumation. Not all skeletons recovered are accounted for or wrongly identified aka bones belong to someone else.

  19. SINGAPORE: Singapore will suspend reciprocal green lane (RGL) arrangements with Malaysia, Germany, South Korea for three months from Monday (Feb 1). In a statement released on Saturday morning (Jan 30), Singapore’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) said: "The Government of Singapore regularly reviews its border measures to manage the risk of importation and onward local transmission of COVID-19 from travellers. "Given the resurgence of COVID-19 cases worldwide, the Government of Singapore will be suspending the Reciprocal Green Lane arrangements with Germany, Malaysia, and the Republic of Korea, for a period of three months beginning from Monday, 1 February 2021, 0001hrs. "The Government of Singapore will review the Reciprocal Green Lane arrangements at the end of the suspension period. Travellers who have already been approved to enter Singapore under these Reciprocal Green Lanes can continue to do so," the statement added. MFA added that the Singapore Government will continue to monitor the global situation and adjust border measures to manage the risk of importation and transmission to the community. "Any changes to border measures will be updated on the SafeTravel website. Travellers are advised to visit the website to check for the most updated border measures," it said. OTHER GREEN LANE ARRANGEMENTS Singapore still has ongoing RGL schemes with Brunei and selected cities in mainland China - Chongqing, Guangdong, Jiangsu, Shanghai, Tianjin and Zhejiang. Singapore earlier suspended RGL arrangements with Indonesia and Japan in December when the two countries announced temporary bans on the entry of foreign nationals (Indonesia) and non-resident foreign nationals (Japan). Given the reciprocal nature of the arrangement, travellers from Indonesia and Japan are also not allowed to apply for travel to Singapore under the RGL. The RGL arrangement allow residents of countries in the scheme to conduct short-term travel for essential business and official purposes in Singapore for up to 14 days. Travellers must test negative for COVID-19 before they travel and undergo another test on arrival. They must remain isolated until test results are released and are required to follow a controlled itinerary for the duration of their stay. SURGE IN CASES Malaysia has logged four-digit daily increases in COVID-19 cases since Dec 9. On Friday, it reported a record 5,725 new infections, taking the national tally to 203,933. Meanwhile, South Korea has also reported recent surge in cases involving Christian mission schools nationwide, reaching 344 infections in total in seven facilities as of Friday. The outbreaks have delayed any easing of social distancing measures ahead of the Lunar New Year holidays. As of midnight on Thursday, the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency (KDCA) reported 469 new coronavirus cases, bringing the national tally to 77,395 cases and 1,399 deaths. Germany reported 17,553 new coronavirus cases on Thursday, bringing the total to 2,178,828, and another 941 deaths. The seven-day incidence rate fell under 100 cases per 100,000 for the first time since the end of October 2020 but the German government wants it to drop below 50. Apart from the green lane, another cross-border travel scheme is the Periodic Commuting Arrangement (PCA) Singapore has with Malaysia. Under the PCA, approved travellers must have stayed in their country of employment for at least 90 days before returning to their home country for short-term leave. This is open to Malaysians who are Singapore permanent residents working in Singapore, as well as citizens and permanent residents of both countries who hold long-term immigration passes in the other country. PCA travellers have to serve a 14-day stay-home notice at a dedicated facility in Singapore. Source: CNA/am(ac)

  27. If you dream of walking around with bread-scented fingers, Tiong Bahru Bakery can now make it a reality. The bakery chain famous for its French pastries is now selling bottles of hand wash that smell just like its brioche bread. It even comes with a name that plays on legendary French fashion house Chanel. “As we zero in on our efforts to expand our bakery’s boulangerie offerings, Brioche N°5 is a novel way of bottling up all that buttery goodness in a treat for the senses, and a cheeky nod to one of the most iconic perfumes in the world,” owner Cynthia Chua said. A 280 milliliter bottle retails at S$24 online and in stores. The hand wash was made in collaboration with local perfumery Oo La Lab and contains whiffs of vanilla, caramel and pineapple. It’s the second time the bakery has come up with a quirky hand wash. It introduced Chewing Gum in 2017, which smells just like the minty Wrigley gum Singaporeans used to love before the 1992 ban. After setting up shop in the hip Tiong Bahru neighborhood in 2012, the chain has since expanded to six outlets across the city.
