SINGAPORE: A temple in Sembawang caught fire on Friday (Sep 18) night.

Videos posted on social media showed large plumes of smoke rising from the Sembawang God of Wealth Temple at Admiralty Street, with most of the building engulfed in flames.

In a Facebook post, the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) said that it was alerted to the fire at about 9.15pm.

The four-storey temple was "well alight" when firefighters arrived at the scene.

The fire "had engulfed the first floor of a 4-storey temple and was spreading to the second floor", SCDF said.

"As a safety precautionary measure, residents from a nearby elderly home were evacuated by the police," said SCDF.

The Acacia Home, which opened in April 2018, helps elderly destitute men and is situated next to the temple.

"During (the) evacuation, an elderly man from the home experienced breathlessness and was assessed by an SCDF paramedic," said SCDF, adding that the man was taken to Khoo Teck Puat Hospital.

"There were no other reported injuries and the elderly residents returned to their rooms at about 11.45 pm," SCDF said.

A total of 11 emergency vehicles and about 60 firefighters were involved in the operation, which at its height saw seven water jets used to combat the blaze.

"The fire, confined to the first and second floor of the 4-storey temple, was extinguished close to midnight," SCDF confirmed.

Damping down operations are ongoing and are expected to last for "another several hours", SCDF said at about 2.18am on Saturday.

Is this a sign that sg economy is really getting more bad than what govt telling her citizens?

yes, its a sign.

in ancient china, if a fire strike palace or temple, its a sign of heavenly unhappiness and that the mandate of heaven is withdrawn.

an example will be louyang's yongning pagoda built by northern wei in 516.

it was struck by fire in 534 and by 535, northern wei was no more.

going back even further to Later Han, a palace fire in 185 preceded the beginning of the end of Han Dynasty.

SINGAPORE — The dogs kept on the grounds of the Sembawang God of Wealth Temple are not chained up and are free to roam the temple at night, said the temple’s management in a Facebook post on Saturday (19 September).

The post came after the carcasses of three dogs were found after Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) officers put out a large blaze at the temple on Friday night.

“We would like to make clarifications on some misinformation that has been going around with regards to the dogs at our temple,” said the temple management, adding that it has seven stray dogs under its care.

“Unfortunately, we have lost three of them as they were trapped on the second level when the fire broke out. The remaining four managed to escape and are safe.”

The temple management noted that this information was “not originally released” as it was still waiting for confirmation from the SCDF. It also shared photos of four dogs, although it did not specify if these were the surviving animals.
