General Qassem Soleimani, the head of Iran's elite Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps' (IRGC's) Quds Force, and architect of its regional security apparatus, has been killed following a US air raid at Baghdad's international airport on Friday.

The White House and the Pentagon confirmed the killing of Soleimani in Iraq, saying the attack was carried out at the direction of US President Donald Trump and was aimed at deterring future attacks allegedly being planned by Iran.

A three-day national mourning period has been declared in Iran in honour of Soleimani.

Top Iran commander Qasem Soleimani killed in US strike on Baghdad airport

BAGHDAD: Top Iranian commander Qasem Soleimani was killed on Friday (Jan 3) in a US strike on Baghdad's international airport, Iran and the US confirmed, in the most dramatic episode yet of escalating tensions between the two countries.

The Pentagon said US President Donald Trump ordered Soleimani's "killing", after a pro-Iran mob this week laid siege to the US embassy.

Early Friday, a volley of missiles hit Baghdad's international airport, striking a convoy belonging to the Hashed al-Shaabi, an Iraqi paramilitary force with close ties to Iran.

Just a few hours later, the Revolutionary Guard Corps announced Soleimani "was martyred in an attack by America on Baghdad airport this morning."

The Hashed confirmed both Soleimani and its deputy chief Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis were killed in what it said was a "US strike that targeted their car on the Baghdad International Airport road".

The Hashed is a network of mostly-Shiite armed units, many of whom have close ties to Tehran but which have been officially incorporated into Iraq's state security forces.

The units joined forces to fight the Islamic State group in 2014, after many of them built up years of fighting experience during Iraq's war years, including against the US.

Who was Qassem Soleimani, Iran's IRGC's Quds Force leader?

General Qassem Soleimani, the head of Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps' (IRGC's) Quds Force was killed early on Friday alongside six others following a US air raid at Baghdad's international airport.

Soleimani acquired celebrity status at home and abroad as leader of the foreign arm of the Revolutionary Guards and for his key role in fighting in Syria and Iraq.

He was instrumental in the spread of Iranian influence in the Middle East, which the United States and Tehran's regional foes Saudi Arabia and Israel have struggled to keep in check.

He survived several assassination attempts against him by Western, Israeli and Arab agencies over the past 20 years.

Soleimani's Quds Force, tasked with carrying out operations beyond Iran's borders, shored up support for Syrian President Bashar al-Assad when he looked close to defeat in the civil war raging since 2011, and also helped armed groups defeat the Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (ISIL, also known as ISIS).

Ascent to power

Soleimani became head of the Quds Force in 1998 and kept a low profile for years while he strengthened Iran's ties with Hezbollah in Lebanon, Syria's Assad and Shia militia groups in Iraq.

In recent years, he stepped into the limelight, appearing alongside Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and other Shia leaders.

Under Soleimani's leadership, the Quds Force vastly expanded its capabilities, becoming a significant influence in intelligence, financial, and political spheres beyond Iran's borders.

Soleimani comes from a humble background, born into a poor family in southeastern Iran's Kerman Province.

He started working as a 13-year-old to help support his family, spending his free time lifting weights and attending sermons by Khamenei.

As a young man during the Iranian revolution in 1979, Soleimani began his ascent through the Iranian military, reportedly receiving just six weeks of tactical training before seeing combat for the first time in Iran's West Azerbaijan province, according to Foreign Policy magazine.

Soleimani emerged from the Iran-Iraq war a national hero for the missions he led across Iraq's border.

Arms in Iraq and Syria

Following the re-establishment of government in Iraq in 2005, Soleimani's influence extended into Iraqi politics under the leadership of former Prime Ministers Ibrahim al-Jaafari and Nouri al-Maliki.

During that time, the Badr Organisation, a Shia political party and paramilitary force that has been described as "Iran's oldest proxy in Iraq", became an arm of the state after the interior and transport ministries came under the control of the armed group's political wing.

Following the outbreak of civil war in Syria in 2011, Soleimani ordered some of his Iraqi militias into Syria to defend the Assad government.

During Iraq's fight against ISIL, the Hashd al-Shaabi (Popular Mobilisation Forces), an Iran-backed Shia paramilitary units, some of which fell under Soleimani's control fought along the Iraqi military to defeat the armed group.

Mohammad Marandi, head of the American Studies at the University of Tehran, said that Soleimani's role in helping defeat ISIL make him a "national hero" and a "martyr" among the Iranian people and other Middle Eastern countries.

"If it wasn't for people like him, this region would have seen black flags flying across the region."

Threats to Soleimani

Soleimani was rumoured to be dead on several occasions, including in a 2006 aircraft crash that killed other military officials in northwestern Iran and following a 2012 bombing in Damascus that killed top aides of embattled Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.

In November 2015, rumours circulated that Soleimani was killed or seriously wounded leading forces loyal to Assad as they fought around Syria's Aleppo.

There have been repeated air attacks on Quds bases in Syria and in August Israel accused the force of planning "killer drone attacks" and said its air raid showed Tehran that its forces were vulnerable anywhere.

Foreign Minister Israel Katz said at the time that Israel was working to "uproot" Soleimani, according to Israeli media.

More recently in October, Tehran said it had foiled a plot by Israeli and Arab agencies to kill Soleimani.

Gold surges as Soleimani killing sends investors to haven assets

Gold advanced toward a six-year high after a U.S. airstrike killed one of Iran’s most powerful generals, ratcheting up tensions in the Middle East and driving demand for havens.

Bullion rallied as much as 1.5% to $1,551.52 an ounce in London, reaching the highest since September. Platinum futures topped $1,000 an ounce to reach the highest since early 2018, while silver and other haven assets including the yen and Treasuries also rose.

The strike in Baghdad ordered by President Donald Trump killed Qassem Soleimani, the Iranian general who led the Revolutionary Guards’ Quds force. Iran’s supreme leader vowed “severe retaliation.” The news helped gold to build on the biggest annual gain in almost a decade, a rally that was driven by a weaker dollar, lower real rates and geopolitical concerns.

“Today’s event has probably only brought forward the inevitable test of the September high,” said Ole Hansen, head of commodity strategy at Saxo Bank A/S. “Rising inflation concerns through higher input prices -- oil and food -- combined with geopolitical uncertainty is a potent cocktail which supports a market already on the move.”

Gold was up 1.1% at $1,546.22 by 7:36 a.m. in New York, taking this week’s gain to 2.4%, the most since August. The metal jumped 18% last year.

Last year’s advance marked a positive shift in investor attitude toward gold, according to RBC Capital Markets, which predicted further gains this year and next. Goldman Sachs Group Inc., Citigroup Inc. and UBS Group AG have said they’re looking for $1,600 an ounce.

January is historically gold’s best month, according to Bloomberg Intelligence, with an average advance of 2.7% over the past 20 years. The metal will approach $1,600 by February if it matches the 5.2% average increase of the past five years.

Still, geopolitics typically don’t have a lasting impact on gold unless broader consequences for the economy or financial markets arise, said Carsten Menke, an analyst at Julius Baer.

Next up for investors is the latest reading on the health of the world’s biggest economy, with U.S. ISM manufacturing data and minutes from the Federal Reserve’s last policy-setting meeting due later on Friday.

Other precious metals

Platinum futures climbed as much as 1.7% to $1,001.40 an ounce in New York, reaching the highest for a most-active contract since February 2018, before paring some gains.

Spot silver gained 0.8% to $18.1592 an ounce and palladium also advanced.

STRIKE #2!!

New US air raid on Hashd commander in Iraq kills medics: Report

A fresh US air raid targeting a commander of Iraq's Hashd al-Shaabi paramilitary forces killed at least six people early on Saturday, according to news reports, a day after an American drone attack killed top Iranian general Qassem Soleimani.

Iraq's state television said the attack took place along Taji Road north of the Iraqi capital Baghdad, but did not name the targeted figure.

Hashd al-Shaabi, also known as Popular Mobilisation Force (PMF), denied that a senior commander was in the convoy.

Al Jazeera has learned that at least six people, including medics, were killed in the latest strike. Reuters reported that three other people were critically wounded.

Taji Road, where the attack took place, leads to a base of non-US coalition forces, including British and Italian troops, according to Al Jazeera's Osama bin Javaid, reporting from Baghdad.

Our correspondent added that a group of vehicles were hit.

A police source told AFP news agency that the bombardment there hit a Hashd convoy and left "dead and wounded" without providing a specific toll.

The PMF is an umbrella of Iraqi militias under Iraq's military.
