SINGAPORE — A 27-year-old man who had graduated from the National University of Singapore (NUS) returned to the university campus to illegally enter the hostel room of a girl whom he followed on social media and steal a vibrator.

Chua Chang Rong later returned the vibrator he had stolen by trespassing into her hall and room. He also began to harass her through a Telegram chat, offering to be her "friend with benefits" and to "pleasure" her.

Chua pleaded guilty to one count each of theft, criminal trespass and harassment on Tuesday (23 March). One more count of a criminal trespass will be taken into consideration for sentencing. District Judge Teoh Ai Lin called for a Mandatory Treatment Order suitability report to assess Chua's suitability for the sentencing option, which would have him receive mental health treatment in lieu of jail time.

Chua got to know about the girl, who is in her 20s, when he was still a student at NUS. He started following her on Instagram as he found her attractive. He found out that she resided in a hall within NUS through her Instagram updates. The two did not know each other personally.

The victim and her hall cannot be named due to a gag order.

Trespassed when victim was overseas

From 30 December 2018 to 13 January 2019, the victim travelled overseas and posted about her travels on Instagram.

Sometime between 3 and 9 January 2019, Chua entered the hall she stayed in by tailgating a student who had access to the building.

Based on his previous experience of staying in an NUS hostel, the accused knew that most students did not lock their room doors and they left their names on their doors. After looking around the hostel, he found the victim’s room marked with her name – it was unlocked.

He entered and sifted through her personal belongings, including clothing and lingerie. In one of her drawers, he found a pink vibrator and felt sexually aroused. He stole the $40 item.

After the victim returned from her travels, she was unable to find the vibrator but assumed that she had simply misplaced it.

On 18 July 2019, Chua decided to return the vibrator to the room. He saw that she had uploaded an Instastory of herself at work at 10am.

At around 11.29am, he trespassed into the hall and rummaged through the girl's belongings again. He saw that she had two new vibrators and fiddled around with them. He also photographed them. He placed the pink vibrator into the same box as the other two.

Contacted victim through Telegram

On 22 July 2019 at around 10pm, Chua felt sexually aroused thinking about how he had entered the victim’s room and looked through her belongings. He decided to message the victim on Telegram via a secret chat after searching for her Instagram handle. He identified himself as Bobby.

In the messages, Chua told the victim that he had returned her sex toy as he “wanted to surprise (her)”. He also texted that he noticed she bought new sex toys. When the victim asked him who he was, Chua simply said, “Before you block me, I want to propose something for you (:”

He asked if she wanted to be "friends with benefits", saying that he could help pleasure her since he "already (knew her) dirty little secret”.

“And now you know mine :)... We can get to know each other real wellllll....," he texted.

He added, “Don’t ignore me :(... I’m the only one you can talk to about this”.

The victim did not reply to the messages, and Chua later deleted most of them. The victim was alarmed by texts and afraid that he had entered her room.

She informed NUS campus security, who reviewed the CCTV footage covering the walkway outside the victim’s room and spotted a man entering her room on 18 July 2019 at around 11.29am. She later lodged a police report.

Chua's lawyer Raphael Louis said that his client was ashamed for what he did and took a lot of time to reflect on what he did. He has since gone for five sessions of counselling. A private psychiatrist had deemed that Chua had fetishistic disorder.

An Institute of Mental Health psychiatrist diagnosed Chua with adjustment disorder with depressed mood, with a high sex drive with possible paraphilia.

Chua will return to court on 7 May.
