  6. SINGAPORE: A 27-year-old man was sentenced to 13 weeks' jail on Friday (Dec 3) for stealing his then-wife's phone and posting an image of the woman having sex with her supervisor on Facebook. The man, who cannot be named due to gag orders protecting the victim's identity, pleaded guilty in September to a charge each of theft and distributing an intimate image. Another two charges were considered in sentencing. The couple has since divorced. At the time of the offences in February last year, the man was still married to the 30-year-old victim, but he was estranged from her and had moved out of the matrimonial home. On Feb 6, 2020, he went to her home to use the toilet, before taking her phone and running out of the house. He looked through her phone as he suspected she was having an affair and found several intimate images and videos of her. He used his own phone to photograph and film the footage, including: A four-second clip of the victim's chest with her face partially visible, a 16-second video of her fully naked, and an image of her having sex with her work supervisor, with both their faces fully visible. The man later returned the phone to the victim, but did not tell her about the footage he had of her. At around 8am on Feb 12, 2020, he posted his wife's intimate images on Facebook so that "everyone can see them", court documents said. He claimed he did so as he did not want others to "share the same fate" as him, and set the post to "public" so that it could be viewed by everyone. He also included the name and occupation of his wife's supervisor in his post, describing him as a homewrecker and warning people to be aware of him. In his post, he included the image of his wife having sex with her supervisor, as well as photos of the supervisor and screenshots of text conversations she had with him. The post went viral and was shared about 2,000 times by 4pm that day, with about 3,000 likes and 1,000 comments. A friend of the supervisor informed him about the post within the hour, while the victim received calls from her friends over it. Not expecting that the post would "receive so much attention", the man later removed it. The prosecution had sought 18 months' jail, while lawyer Wee Hong Shern asked for five to seven weeks' jail. EX-WIFE COMMITTED SACRILEGE: DEFENCE Mr Wee said his client has no prior convictions and has suffered from this ordeal, developing major depressive disorder. He said his client has tried to obey his religion by trusting his then-wife and encouraging her not to engage in "haram" activities. It was the victim who abused his client's trust, Mr Wee said, noting that she was his wife at the time and "had committed sacrilege" by engaging in sexual intercourse with another man. Instead of being ashamed or clandestine in her affair, she instead "had the audacity to immortalise her sacrilege by consenting to and keeping a recording of her sexual intercourse of the extra-marital affair". "Whilst she may not have done anything criminal, her acts are revoltingly immoral," said Mr Wee. His client was allowed to begin his jail term on Dec 17. The prosecution intends to appeal. For theft, the man could have been jailed up to seven years and fined. For intentionally distributing an intimate image of another person, he could have been jailed up to five years, fined, caned, or given a combination of these punishments. Source: CNA/ll(ac)

  15. KUALA LUMPUR: The first positive case of Omicron has been detected in Malaysia in a student from South Africa, said Health Minister Khairy Jamaluddin on Friday (Dec 3). The foreigner, who is studying in a private university in Ipoh, Perak, arrived in Malaysia on Nov 19. Mr Khairy said in a press conference that the Omicron case was confirmed yesterday based on a sample taken from the 19-year-old student, who took the COVID-19 reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) test upon arrival at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA). He said that the student had arrived in Malaysia from Singapore. The student was then shuttled on a university bus from KLIA to Ipoh, where she underwent quarantine. The next day, on Nov 20, she got her test results back saying she was positive for COVID-19. Five others who were on the same bus with the student were then placed under quarantine. All of them tested negative. The student was fully vaccinated in Malaysia in September before she went home to visit her family in South Africa. She was asymptomatic and has completed her quarantine on Nov 29. According to Mr Khairy, the student and eight close contacts will undergo RT-PCR swab tests again on Friday, "just to make sure that (she is) no longer positive". The minister added that the student entered Malaysia before the World Health Organization (WHO) declared Omicron a variant of concern on Nov 26. Following WHO's pronouncement, Malaysia had temporarily imposed entry restrictions on foreign workers and international students from eight African countries with a high risk of Omicron infections from Dec 1. Travellers from Botswana, Eswatini, Lesotho, Mozambique, Namibia, South Africa, Zimbabwe and Malawi are not allowed to enter Malaysia during the ban. Mr Khairy said in the Friday press conference that from Dec 3, travellers arriving at KLIA from high-risk countries will also wear tracking devices throughout their quarantine period. “The VTL (vaccinated travel lane) with Singapore will continue for the time being, with additional self tests on the third and seventh days for those who come from Singapore via the VTL,” he added. Responding to a question on whether the two COVID-19 cases who tested preliminarily positive for Omicron in Singapore would affect the VTL arrangement between the two countries, Mr Khairy said: "I have spoken to my Singaporean counterpart this morning, Mr Ong Ye Kung. We reaffirm that the VTL will continue, and we will continue to update each other on the daily base and coordinate our response accordingly." HOW OMICRON WAS DETECTED The minister explained that the case was detected as part of the ministry's surveillance initiative following WHO's pronouncement on Omicron. Malaysia's Institute for Medical Research carried out PCR genotyping assay on 74 positive samples detected at KLIA between Nov 11 and Nov 28, he said. The results showed that one of the samples was highly likely to be Omicron, he added. "Subsequently, whole genome sequencing was carried out and showed a positive result for Omicron variant on Dec 2," Mr Khairy said. The minister said Ministry of Health decided to carry out genomic tests on positive cases reported prior to the Nov 24 WHO pronouncement on Omicron variant. "That means we are not just carrying out (the tests) now. I requested for all samples since Nov 11 to be retrieved and run through whole genomic sequencing for us to be sure of the variants," he explained. Mr Khairy added that there has been no drastic rise in COVID-19 cases in Ipoh, Perak, and the places where the said traveller had been, such as KLIA. Source: AGENCIES/ih(tx)

  16. SINGAPORE - Sale of standard tickets - limited use paper tickets - at MRT stations will be progressively phased out between January and March 2022. This comes as most commuters are already using stored value cards or account-based ticketing such as contactless bank cards. Standard tickets were introduced to allow commuters to pay for their ride when the MRT system began operations in 1987, but now fewer than one in 1,000 trips are paid using these tickets, according to the Land Transport Authority (LTA) in August. The LTA said on Friday (Dec 3) that the move will start with the Thomson-East Coast and Downtown lines from Jan 10. This will be followed by the Circle and North East lines on Feb 10, and the North-South and East-West lines on March 10. The LTA has also reduced the minimum top-up amount for stored value cards such as ez-link cards at ticketing machines to $2, down from $10 for adults and $5 for student concession cards. "This will allow commuters who have limited cash on hand to top up, continue their journeys and enjoy the cost savings," said the LTA. The move to phase out standard tickets - purchased for single or return trips - because of low usage was announced earlier in August. The LTA said stored value cards and account-based ticketing options offer commuters more savings and convenience. For example, a 3.2km trip costs $1.70 when using standard tickets, compared to $0.92 with stored value cards or account-based ticketing. In preparation for the phasing out of standard tickets, LTA conducted pilots earlier this year at some MRT stations where the sale was temporarily halted. Responding to queries from The Straits Times, an LTA spokesman said the sale of standard tickets at general ticketing machines at Farrer Park and Lavender MRT stations was temporarily suspended for a day on Aug 31, and at all stations on the Thomson-East Coast Line for a week starting on Nov 15. This was to enable the rail operators, LTA and TransitLink to refine standard operating procedures for the actual phase out, and gather information on commuters' standard ticket use, she said. "Through these trials, we found that those who were still using standard tickets generally had access to alternative payment modes such as contactless bank cards, mobile wallets and ez-link cards," the LTA noted. Following the announcement in August, it has been working with partners to contact seniors, lower-income groups and migrant workers to encourage them to switch to stored value cards or account-based payment. Since September, letters have been sent to Comcare recipients who do not own a concession card to inform them that they are eligible for a free adult ez-link card. These free cards can be redeemed at any of the 48 Transit Link ticket offices or concession card replacement offices within three months from the date of the letter. "To assist commuters as standard tickets are phased out, service ambassadors will be deployed at selected train stations over January to March 2022," the LTA said.

  18. SINGAPORE - Two imported Covid-19 cases have preliminarily tested positive for the Omicron variant on Thursday (Dec 2), the Ministry of Health (MOH) said. Both cases were isolated upon arrival in Singapore on Wednesday, and had not interacted in the community. "There is currently no evidence of any community transmission from these cases," said MOH in a statement on Thursday. The ministry added that both cases are currently recovering in isolation wards at the National Centre for Infectious Diseases. They are fully vaccinated, and have mild symptoms of cough and scratchy throat. Both cases arrived from Johannesburg on board Singapore Airlines flight SQ479 on Wednesday. The first case is a 44-year-old Singapore permanent resident who was travelling from Mozambique and transited in Johannesburg. He had tested negative for Covid-19 in his pre-departure test in Mozambique on Nov 29. The second case is a 41-year-old Singaporean woman who travelled from South Africa. She had tested negative for Covid-19 in her pre-departure test in Johannesburg on Nov 29. “They had undergone a polymerase chain reaction (PCR) test upon arrival in Singapore and were immediately conveyed to a Stay-Home Notice (SHN) dedicated facility to be isolated while awaiting their test results,” said MOH. Their PCR test results revealed the presence of S-gene Target Failure, which may be associated with the Omicron variant, the ministry added. MOH said the National Public Health Laboratory is conducting whole genome sequencing to confirm if the two cases had indeed contracted the Omicron variant. The remaining 19 passengers on the same flight have tested negative for Covid-19, said MOH, adding that contact tracing is ongoing. All 19 were quarantined at designated facilities upon arrival and did a PCR test. They will have to do another PCR test when their 10-day SHN is over. Other close contacts will also be placed on 10-day quarantine and undergo PCR tests at the start and end of their quarantine, said MOH. “All patients suspected or confirmed to be infected with the Omicron variant will be sent to NCID for isolation and clinical management. Home recovery will not apply,” the ministry added. https://www.straitstimes.com/singapore/health/2-imported-covid-19-cases-in-spore-test-preliminarily-positive-for-omicron-variant
