The_King Posted May 17, 2021 Share Posted May 17, 2021 (edited) A Singaporean artist wants to crack open female beauty standards through her latest collaboration with the Singapore Art Museum. The museum is calling for all kinds of Singaporean women to submit photos of their butts as part of artist Amanda Heng’s Singirl Online Project. It aims to defy the “demure” stereotype of Singaporean women projected worldwide by how Singapore Airlines has marketed flight attendants since the ‘70s. The exhibition runs until July 11. “Calling for ‘butticipation’ – inviting women of all shapes and shades to join the Singirl Online Project,” the museum said online yesterday. “Utilising the posterior, artist Amanda Heng puts forth a playful and defiant counterpoint to the ‘Singapore Girl’ – a demure image of the Singapore Airlines stewardess which grew to become a uniquely Singapore icon and standard for feminine identity,” it added. https://www.instagram.com/p/CO5I_swH_nX/?utm_source=ig_embed&ig_rid=34982314-9769-4915-ae9c-c7ca2ff6adb8 Heng’s art project has been running since 2000. One of her past exhibitions involved photos of Heng wearing the traditional kebaya, mocking the sweet and submissive image of the local airline’s air stewardesses. For her latest project, participants can snap photos of their bums at a booth located at the National Gallery. The photos will be added to Heng’s database. The project is part of a larger art program hosted by the Singapore Art Museum, called Wikicliki: Collecting Habits on an Earth Filled with Smartphones. Five other artists – Heman Chong, Chua Chye Teck, Debbie Ding, Bani Haykal and Charles Lim Yi Yong – are also involved.
