  10. SINGAPORE: The English Premier League has obtained an order from Singapore's High Court to force internet service providers (ISPs) to block access to 25 websites that illegally stream football matches. These 25 sites are the most popular among illegal streaming sites, the Premier League said in a statement to CNA on Thursday (Mar 21). The league had summoned several Singapore telcos including M1, MyRepublic, Singtel and ViewQwest to court in February for the copyright and designs case. In the league's statement, it said it has successfully secured the court order as part of its ongoing efforts to tackle illegal streaming throughout Asia. "The technical method by which the ISPs are required to implement the blocks has been refined, making it harder for the operators of the pirated websites to circumvent them," said the league. With the latest order, more than 460 domains are now blocked in Singapore by the Premier League. The league has a global anti-piracy programme, working in the past year with authorities in Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand, Hong Kong and Vietnam to crack down on suppliers of illegal Premier League content. Legal actions included website blocks in Malaysia, Vietnam and Indonesia, as well as landmark cases against sellers of illicit streaming devices in Singapore. General counsel for the Premier League Kevin Plumb said the Singapore courts' decision shows "a continued commitment to protecting intellectual property". He added that shutting down such pirate sites not only stops illegal activity but helps reduce the risk of fans being scammed. "We know from recent research that people accessing illegal streaming sites in Singapore are nearly four times more likely to be exposed to a cyber threat than on a mainstream site," he said. He said the league will continue working with its broadcast partner StarHub, as well as local authorities and ISPs, to block illegal streams. In 2022, StarHub won the broadcasting rights in Singapore for the English Premier League, breaking a 12-year streak by rival Singtel. The six-year deal started in the 2022-2023 season. The Premier League recently commissioned a study by Professor Paul Watters, a cybersecurity consultant and researcher. It found that consumers have an average 48 per cent chance of encountering a cyber threat on the top 25 illegal streaming sites in Singapore. More than half of the advertisements analysed on these websites were categorised as high risk, with consumers 3.5 times more at risk of scams when visiting illegal sports streaming sites compared with mainstream sites, the study stated. The blocking comes about five years after the Premier League first opened an international office in Singapore. One of the telcos, Singtel, said it has complied with the court order and blocked the websites. CNA has also reached out to M1, StarHub, MyRepublic and Viewqwest for comment. Source: CNA/ll(mi)

  19. Two female pedestrians, aged 68 and 73, were taken to the hospital after an accident with a motorcycle outside Boon Keng MRT station on the evening of March 20. Sharing a photo of the accident's aftermath, Stomper Philip said it happened in front of the bus stop at the station. "I went to a nearby clinic to seek assistance to render first aid, but I was rejected and was told to just call an ambulance and wait," said the Stomper. "I was quite disappointed." A video posted by SG Road Vigilante shows paramedics from an ambulance attending to the casualties lying on the road. A Harley-Davidson Fat Bob motorcycle was also shown parked at the bus stop. In response to a Stomp query, the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) said it was alerted to the accident at Serangoon Road at about 7:55pm. The two women were conscious when taken to Tan Tock Seng Hospital. When contacted by Stomp, the police said the 47-year-old male motorcyclist sustained minor injuries but refused to be taken to the hospital. Police investigations are ongoing.

  29. What would you pack in your luggage on your travels? Likely not a veritable horde of terrapins in the thousands. That was what Rafique Syed Hariza Ali Hussain, 40, was accused of doing on a flight from Singapore to Tamil Nadu, India on Nov. 7, 2023. Allegedly smuggled 5,160 terrapins on flight According to charge sheets seen by CNA, the Indian national and Singapore permanent resident allegedly packed and concealed 5,160 red-eared terrapins into his two personal bags. Rafique then allegedly smuggled them on a flight from Singapore's Changi Airport to India's Coimbatore International Airport in Tamil Nadu. The terrapins, commonly known as red-eared sliders, are considered the most popular turtle in the pet trade, according to the National Parks Board (NParks). "These turtles are often purchased as juveniles and discarded by pet owners once they mature," NParks added. Bags not ventilated The terrapins are subject to Singapore's Wildlife Act, which prohibits the illegal trade of wildlife. Under this Act, it is illegal to sell or export any wildlife — whether dead or alive — without the Director General’s written approval to do so. Rafique was also charged under the Animals and Birds Act for failing to take reasonable steps to ensure the terrapins were not suffering unnecessarily. This was because his bags were not ventilated. Offered bail Rafique was offered bail of S$35,000, reported CNA. He said that either his Singaporean friend, or his own wife or daughter could bail him out. Rafique's next hearing is scheduled for next month. Invasive species Red-eared sliders are not native to Singapore. In fact, they are an invasive species, which means they cause harm to the local ecosystem by threatening the survival of native species. The red-eared slider was introduced to Singapore via the aquarium trade, and those in the wild here are likely released pets https://mothership.sg/2024/03/allegedly-smuggle-5160-terrapins-india-flight/
