  1. Myth debunked: Blowing in your Nintendo games never actually fixed anything If you played the NES, SNES or Nintendo 64, you’ve probably blown into a cartridge or two. The quick-fix trick cleared out any dust that was preventing games from working properly — or so we thought. The PBS Digital Studios show It’s OK To Be Smart recently examined the practice, which was often used when a game appeared to be frozen or did not launch correctly. However, it turns out our “cleaning” efforts were never actually doing anything and all that excess breathing was really just our brains playing tricks on us. As the video below explains, what actually helped get the games working was simply removing the cartridge and placing it back into the system — blowing air had nothing to do with it, and actually, the moisture in your breath may have even damaged games. Chris Higgins at Mental Floss also touched on this topic with a great post that fully debunks the air-blowing practice. “My money is on the blowing thing being a pure placebo, offering the user just another chance at getting a good connection,” Higgins wrote. “The problems with Nintendo’s connector system are well-documented, and most of them are mechanical — they just wore out faster than expected.” So there you have it — blowing into Nintendo games was really just a myth, and as PBS notes below, gamers are just victims of confirmation bias. https://www.geekwire.com/2014/blow-nintendo-games/

  4. When the God of Fortune comes knocking at the door, most people will not hesitate to welcome him in. That's what a debt collection company has done, delivering some luck to debtors they're visiting this festive season. Armed with lucky bags, a staff member dressed up as God of Fortune turned up at several residents' doorsteps "to give luck and not to demand payment," said Fast Debt Recovery Specialist Pte Ltd. The bags, which were hung at the gates, also included something that may help reverse debtors' fortunes — a TOTO lottery slip and 4D numbers printed on the debt collection notice (cleverly placed in a red packet). https://www.facebook.com/FastDebtRecovery/posts/1716368201874448 And if they're lucky, they might just strike it rich in the upcoming $8 million Hong Bao draw. As per Chinese tradition, paying off one's debts before the new year also reflects a wish for better beginnings. According to the company, this is not the first time they've been giving out these lucky bags during Chinese New Year, but the God of Fortune is a new addition this time around. Getting a visit from the auspicious figure sure beats having a man in funeral garb yelling "Please return the money!" outside your door.

  23. The elephant died while giving birth and both mother and calf were buried at the plantation (Facebook pic) JOHOR BAHRU: A female elephant wandered into a plantation near here to give birth but both mother and unborn calf died because of complications in a breech delivery. Johor Department of Wildlife and National Parks (Perhilitan) director, Salman Saaban said they received a call from a worker of the Mados Plantation, Lenggor, near Mersing at 1.30pm who had discovered an elephant having difficulty giving birth. He said three Mersing Perhilitan personnel were rushed to the location while six plantation workers were monitoring the situation. However, he said that about 5pm, the elephant was no longer moving. “Upon checking, it was found that only the legs of the calf were sticking out. It was a breech delivery and the female elephant had died due to dystocia or obstructed labour,” he said in a statement here today. Salman said attempts to save the male calf also failed and it died in the mother’s womb. “The elephant’s abdomen was cut open in an attempt to save the calf but it was unsuccessful,” he said. The carcasses of the elephants were then buried with the help of the plantation management, he added.

  24. The grandmother of three kids left orphaned almost overnight after their parents' deaths has stated that she will be taking up the responsibility of caring for them. The children's mother, Iris Ting Su Yin, 42, was found covered in blood at the void deck of Block 206 Tampines Street 21 early on Wednesday morning (Feb 10). Ting, the centre head for the Ministry of Education (MOE) Kindergarten @ Farrer Park, had stab wounds to her body and neck. She was taken unconscious to Changi General Hospital, where she died. The children's father Ng Chee Kok, 45, was found lying motionless at the foot of Block 205A Punggol Field hours later. He later died in hospital. A photo allegedly taken just before his body was found showed a man, believed to be Ng, standing topless on a window ledge of the block. The police believe Ng to be Ting's assailant, The Straits Times reported. Iris Ting Su Yin was found at a Tampines void deck on Feb 10, while her estranged husband Ng Chee Kok was found at the foot of a block in Punggol. PHOTOS: Google Map screengrabs Bereaved mother Ting's mother was visibly distraught when reporters from Lianhe Zaobao visited her at her Tampines flat on Thursday. As preparations were still underway for her daughter's funeral and she had yet to receive the casket, she simply said: "I just want to see my daughter for the last time. She's already gone, there's no point holding on to anything else." When asked about her three grandchildren, the elderly woman resolutely replied that she will be their main caregiver. She also expressed gratitude for the concern from friends and members of the public, including Minister of Parliament for Tampines GRC Cheng Li Hui, who offered the family her support and assistance. Neighbours interviewed by Zaobao at the couple's Punggol flat said that the pair had three children, two teenaged daughters — one studying in a polytechnic and the other in secondary school — and a son who is in primary school. According to reports, the couple were married in June 2000 and moved into their Punggol flat in 2004. However, neighbours said that for reasons unknown, Ting took the kids and moved out of their matrimonial home last year to live with her mum in Tampines. A neighbour told the Chinese language paper that Ng was seldom seen after that and they assumed he had also moved out. Ting reportedly took out a Personal Protection Order (PPO) against Ng on March 6 last year, checks by The Straits Times revealed. But he allegedly breached the PPO about a month later on April 15. He was charged with two counts of harassment and released on bail of $10,000. Court documents also showed that Ng had used violence on Ting and harassed and stalked her in Tampines, The Straits Times reported. He was due to be in court next Wednesday. When reporters visited Ting's workplace on Thursday, her colleagues stated they were aware of the tragic incident. A security guard who declined to be named expressed sadness at her death, describing Ting as a friendly person. Police investigations into the unnatural deaths are ongoing.
