  6. SINGAPORE: An employee at the Singapore National Eye Centre (SNEC) was wrongly administered the equivalent of five doses of the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine due to a human error, the public healthcare institution said on Saturday (Feb 6). The error happened on Jan 14 during a vaccination exercise conducted at SNEC for its staff members. “The error was discovered within minutes of the vaccination, when the staff was resting in a designated area after vaccination,” said SNEC in a press release. “Senior doctors were alerted immediately and the staff was assessed and found to be well, with no adverse reaction or side effects.” As a precaution, the affected employee was warded at Singapore General Hospital (SGH) for observation. "The staff’s condition remained stable throughout and the staff was discharged two days later. We have been following up closely with the staff, who remains well," said SNEC. The vaccination exercise at the eye centre was stopped immediately and the rest of its employees were vaccinated at SGH. “SNEC is not involved in Singapore’s vaccination exercise for any other groups,” it said. According to SNEC, investigations showed that it was a human error resulting from a lapse in communication among the vaccination team at the time. “The staff in charge of diluting the vaccine had been called away to attend to other matters during the preparation of the vaccine, and a second staff member had mistaken the undiluted dose in the vial to be ready for administering,” said SNEC. The eye centre has done a “thorough review” of its internal processes and has taken steps to ensure that such lapses do not happen again, said SNEC’s medical director Professor Wong Tien Yin, apologising for the incident. “SNEC takes a very serious view of this incident. The safety of those receiving the vaccination during our staff vaccination exercise is of our utmost priority. We are extremely sorry that this incident happened,” he said. “We have apologised to the staff concerned and the staff’s family. We will continue to monitor the staff’s health closely and provide the necessary support.” Source: CNA/gs

  7. A Singaporean woman who used to sell food at local night markets has brought those pasar malam vibes to a store in Jurong. Named Pasar Malam Corner for the Malay term for night market, the Jurong East shop offers night market street food such as Japanese takoyaki, banana fritters, Thai Iced Tea, and bandung rose milk, just outside the JCube mall. While the shop is operated by a woman known only as Asnizar, her daughter was spreading the word last night. “Due to covid we’re unable to give u pasar malam but dont worry we will bring pasar malam to u ! so pls come down and support,” she tweeted as @Cr0issant7, sharing photos of the store. A lot of people late last night were either feeling pangs of hunger or night market withdrawal – her message has been retweeted more than 2,000 times. In the photos, snacks are seen spread out across a booth, a familiar night market sight. Such markets used to be a common sight in Singapore’s working-class neighborhoods but have all but vanished since the COVID-19 outbreak hit a year ago. Several other famous night market vendors, such as Jayz snacks and The Original Vadai, have also resorted to renting out stores in places like Sembawang and Joo Chiat to stay afloat. The pandemic is mostly contained in Singapore, with just a trickle of new daily cases reported in recent weeks. Since it began, nearly 60,000 infections and 29 deaths have been counted.

  12. Bak kwa, a popular snack during the Chinese New Year celebrations. (PHOTO: Reuters/Loriene Perera) SINGAPORE — The Singapore police are advising the public to be alert to scams involving the sale of bak kwa, the dried-meat snack which is popular during the Chinese New Year period. In a media release on Thursday (4 February), police said that scammers would post post advertisements on Facebook, claiming to sell “Hock Moon Hiong” bak kwa – a famous brand based in Malaysia – in Singapore. Victims were required to place orders via Facebook and make full payment via PayNow or bank transfer. They only discovered that they have been scammed when they did not receive the bak kwa and realised that the seller had become uncontactable. Preventive measures to avoid being scammed Police advise the public to adopt these preventive measures: If the deal is too good to be true, it probably is. Purchase only from authorised sellers or reputable sources. Only meat products from approved sources can be imported or brought into Singapore. Verify seller’s profile on online marketplaces through customer reviews and ratings. If responding to online classified advertisements, always insist on cash on delivery. Those have information related to such crimes, or if they are in doubt, please call the police hotline at 1800-2550000, or submit it online. Please call 999 if urgent police assistance is required. For more information on scams, the public can visit the Scam Alert website or call the anti-scam hotline at 1800-7226688. Join the “Spot the Signs. Stop the Crimes” campaign to receive up-to-date messages and share them with family and friends.

  19. BreadTalk Hires Pest Control Services After Lizard Allegedly Found In Box Of Buns Lizards often have a way of appearing at the most unexpected times and places. One woman certainly found this out the hard way when she opened a box of bread bought from BreadTalk IHQ and found a dead lizard in it. Source She promptly posted an Instagram story about the incident, and judging by the expletives used, she probably wasn’t too happy. BreadTalk has launched an investigation into the incident. Dead lizard found in BreadTalk box On Wednesday (3 Feb) morning, the woman was about to munch on her breakfast bun when she looked down in the box and got a rude shock. As it turned out, a lizard was perched in the corner of the box. Source The woman explained that the lizard was dead as it did not move when her helper prodded it. BreadTalk apologetic about incident The bread was purchased from BreadTalk IHQ at Tai Seng. Source After learning of the incident, BreadTalk reached out to the woman on Instagram, saying they would contact her about it soon. After some back and forth, she finally got on a call with the company’s spokesperson. According to the Instagram post, the call was “civil and apologetic”. BreadTalk then informed that they will get back to her. Following that, the woman was apparently asked repeatedly to take down her post on Instagram. However, she did not see a need to do so and politely declined their requests. Woman disappointed by management of incident Later in the afternoon, BreadTalk reached out to her again. During the interactions, they said CCTV showed the lizard was not in the box beforehand. However, the woman was sure the box was sealed when she bought it. She felt that it was possible the lizard was underneath the bread at the time as it was dead and seemed a little burnt when she found it. By this point, the woman was frustrated at the situation, and felt as if BreadTalk was pushing the blame back on her. In her post, she noted that they did not offer any compensation or solution, and felt disappointed by the way the incident was managed. Investigations ongoing Speaking to MS News, a BreadTalk spokesperson confirmed that it was informed of the incident at 10am on 3 Feb. BreadTalk immediately launched an investigation and reached out to the customer, the spokesperson said. The bread in question was purchased on 2 Feb and in reviewing their CCTV footage, it showed that the buns were packed at the counter when it was ordered. Source In addition, they hired a pest control service to inspect the outlet and reports showed that there were no signs of lizards. However, they understood that the customer is upset and rightfully so. The company will continue to help and support her throughout the investigation. BreadTalk also assures the public that food safety and hygiene is their top priority. Hope investigation will prevent such incidents in future At the moment, it is unclear of how exactly the lizard ended up in the box of buns. Hopefully, the investigations will reveal more details in time to come and ensure that such incidents will not happen in the future.
