(Zaobao News) It is reported that the Malaysian Cabinet has decided not to build the Xinlong high-speed rail together with Singapore, and is preparing to complete the domestic high-speed rail construction alone. The new "High Speed Rail 2.0" project is expected to begin construction in 2022. Sources say that Malaysia is prepared to compensate Singapore with more than S$100 million.

"Malaysia Insight" quoted sources as saying that the Cabinet decided to withdraw the high-speed rail cooperation plan with Singapore at a meeting last week. In other words, the new high-speed rail line will stop at Johor and will not enter Singapore. The source pointed out that Malaysia must compensate Singapore with S$104.67 million after canceling this cooperation with Singapore. "It must be compensated on December 31 this year."

According to the news, the cabinet has also decided that the unit responsible for the high-speed rail plan will be handed over to the Ministry of Communications from the former Minister of the Prime Minister's Department Mustafa, who was in charge of economic affairs.

Malaysia and Singapore signed a bilateral agreement on the high-speed rail between Malaysia and Singapore in December 2016. After the regime change in Malaysia in 2018, the Pakatan Harapan government requested that the high-speed rail plan be shelved for two years. After the National League government led by Prime Minister Muhyiddin came to power in March this year, it again requested an extension in May. Singapore agreed to extend the deadline for the last time to December 31. Once the time limit expires, if Malaysia decides not to continue the Xinlong high-speed rail plan, it must compensate Singapore for the cost of fulfilling the agreed obligations as agreed.

Xu Wenyuan, the former Minister of Infrastructure Coordination and Transport Minister of Singapore, revealed in Parliament in July 2018 that Singapore’s expenditure on the Xinlong High Speed Rail reached S$256 million at that time and could reach S$300 million by the end of 2018. Malaysia has compensated Singapore S$15 million as an extension fee for the first extension.
