Indian hospital mistakenly transfused fruit juice as blood for patient. Patient dies

An Indian hospital has been accused of mistaking juice for platelet plasma into a dengue patient, killing him. Initial investigations by authorities revealed errors at the hospital, and a lockdown has been ordered to investigate. The family of the deceased has called on the state government to hold those involved accountable and take stern action.

A private hospital in the city of Allahabad (Prayagraj) in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh allegedly provided a bag of plasma to the family of the 32-year-old deceased. The deceased's condition deteriorated after receiving a blood transfusion and passed away after being transferred to another private hospital, the family of the deceased said.

The family of the deceased also said that doctors at the second hospital told them that the bag of "plasma" was actually a mixture of chemicals and Mozambique juice commonly known as sweet lime.

Uttar Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Brajesh Pathak tweeted: "A dengue patient was infused with lime juice instead of plasma. I have instructed the hospital to be locked down and the plasma packs have been sent Testing. If found guilty, the hospital will face severe action."

The hospital involved denied the allegations, expressed support for the investigation, and said the plasma was purchased by the family of the deceased. The patient's platelet level dropped to 17,000, and his family was asked to purchase plasma, the hospital said.

"They brought five units of plasma from a government hospital. The patient reacted after three units and we stopped the infusion."
