Covid-19 has resulted in widespread fear all over the world, and unfortunately, such fears can result in discriminatory behaviour. One man from Singapore took to Facebook to share an incident of how he had been beaten up in London.

He has been studying in London for the past two years.

Attacked by several people

Jonathan Mok walked past a group of young men last Monday (Feb. 24) on Oxford Street, when they shouted something at him.

He said he could not hear what they said exactly, but they apparently mentioned “coronavirus”.

After he turned to look at them, he heard one of the men shout “don’t you dare look at me”.

Mok said that he was then punched in the face by more than one man.

In his post, he said that a few passers-by had tried to reason with his attackers, but one of them tried to kick him.

The man who tried to kick him allegedly said, “I don’t want your coronavirus in my country”, before swinging another punch at him.

Fractures in face

The group left before the police arrived, and Mok went to the A&E.

In his post, he shared some photos of his injuries.

Mok said that he suffered a few fractures in his face and might need to undergo reconstructive surgery to fix some of the bones.

This was what he looked like immediately after the attack:

And this was the state of bruising a day after the attack: 2-1.jpgMok said that he has experienced several racist statements directed at him in the past few weeks, with some referencing Covid-19.

In his post, he also wrote:

Why should anyone, simply because of the colour of their skin, be subjected to abuse, in any form, verbal or physical?”
