  10. A mookata dining experience almost always involves grilled pork accompanied with alcohol. Having it otherwise might even be seen as a paradox to some. But for Jackeline Goh, that's the idea she's been trying to sell to sceptics since opening Chickata in 2016. The restaurant applied for halal certification in 2017 before being rebranded to Chice in December 2020. In a TikTok video shared last Saturday (Jan 13), the co-owner explained that running a halal-certified food establishment may not always correlate to welcoming a large number of Muslim customers. "We are non-Muslims so people might not have confidence in us," the 39-year-old said. This was especially true when Chice was in the midst of applying for halal certification back in 2017. Transitioning from a non-halal to a halal food joint was a challenge as sales dipped to "almost zero every day", Jackeline admitted. Not only was attracting customers an issue, hiring Muslim staff was a struggle as some might not feel comfortable with working at a place that has yet to receive their halal certificate. Once the restaurant has received it, Jackeline needed to convince a different group of people to give Chice a chance. Mookata literally translates to "skillet pork" where diners cook raw meat on a tabletop grill lathered with pork fat. Here lies a problem for Jackeline. "Chinese (non-Muslims) also don't want to eat because no pork," she lamented. In fact, Jackeline mentioned how "a lot" of her friends have yet to drop by for a taste of her food. In addition, alcohol is also prohibited at the restaurant. Hence, some non-Muslims may simply choose to avoid Chice altogether. While Jackeline shared the more unfavourable aspects of running a halal mookata, Chice seemed to have found its footing among those who gave it a chance. At the time of writing, the restaurant scored a 4.4 rating out of 5 on Google from over 200 reviewers. What is halal? Halal translates to lawful or allowable in Arabic and according to Islamic worldview, any food or drink which falls under this category is permitted for consumption. A common misconception is that halal simply means "no pork, no lard". But non-halal ingredients must also be taken into consideration such as dressings containing alcohol.

  14. Chinese New Year is coming and CNY bazaars are happening around Singapore. The problem is that they are held in residential areas and can be rather noisy. Unfortunately for Stomper Queenie, she lives right next to one in Yishun. "The music is so loud that even closing the windows and drawing curtains closed, it can still be heard. It is a non-stop continuous loop of CNY tunes," said the Stomper. "Due to how sound is projected, it bounces off the surrounding HDB walls into my unit from the moment the bazaar opens until it closes. I've had to keep all my bedroom windows closed, my living room and kitchen windows partially open since this began." The Chong Pang City CNY Trade Fair in Yishun started on Jan 9 and ends on Feb 9. "On the first day, the vendor blasted music until 11.30pm. Then there was a worker setting up more stuff and making noise until 3am. "On the second day, it started at 8.30am and went on until 10.30pm," recounted the Stomper, who shared a video of the bazaar taken on the third day at 7.34am from her bedroom window overlooking the Chong Pang Amphitheatre. "I am Chinese Singaporean but even this is too much. It’s like standing in the supermarket and hearing this on a loop for more than 12 hours at a go. Can you imagine enduring this for one day, much less for 32 days? "I understand that everyone wants to get business in these challenging times but playing music at such a loud volume shouldn't be one of the ways. You can play the music but keep it at an acceptable level, where shoppers within the premises can hear." The Stomper said she had reported the issue via the OneService app. She added: "I called the police and all they can do is advise the vendor to turn the music down during the day but can’t enforce. I have also highlighted this issue to my town council property officer and MP. "How to prevent future incidents from happening? Because this isn’t the first time that a public faculty has been rented out to a third party, causing a noise disturbance. It has seriously affected my well-being and work each time it happens. My home is not peaceful because of such incidents. "This bazaar is happening across Singapore. Wondering if anyone else is facing the same issue." In response to a Stomp query, a spokesperson for Nee Soon Town Council said: "The town council is working with the Merchants' Association regarding the resident's concern. We have advised the trade fair operator to lower the volume of music played. "Community spaces such as Chong Pang Amphitheatre can be found in many town centres. These spaces are built to support larger scale activities such as community events. Occasionally, these spaces are also rented out for trade fairs. "We have to maintain a balance between the residents who enjoy a more bustling town centre as well as keeping neighbouring residents in mind. As such, we work with our community partners to ensure blocks of downtime after each use of the space."

  30. Why the HDB stairwell? Probably because although it is a public place, the stairwell is relatively secluded as most HDB residents do not use the stairs since they can take the lift. So for certain people looking for some privacy, the HDB stairwell is an easily accessible option. This is apparently the case at Block 742 Bedok Reservoir Road, according to Stomper James, who described a staircase landing there as "busy". "It is frequented by students and workers as a 'chill out' place," said the Stomper. "Teenagers were caught hugging and playing there. Rubbish was often left behind after use. There was even human defecation and urine on Jan 10." In response to a Stomp query, a spokesperson for Aljunied-Hougang Town Council said: "The common area in question is relatively isolated from residential units, hence conducive to some individuals to use it as a space to conduct their activities. "The town council has since put up posters to deter littering and urinating. They also serve to create awareness among those visiting the spot that activities in the area are being monitored. "In the meantime, the town council has cleaned up and disinfected the area. "Periodic visits have been scheduled to monitor the area for cleanliness and possible nuisance caused to residents. Should the issue persist, the town council will pursue further measures to address the problem."
