By Leanne For those born in the early 80s and 90s, we’re sure many of you have fond memories of Yaohan, one of the most popular and iconic Japanese departmental store in Singapore. Let us bring you back in time with some cool facts that you didn’t know about it. Singapore’s Opening Photo credits: Straits Times On its first day of opening, Yaohan attracted almost one million Singaporeans in its first week of operations. Multiple Firsts for Singaporeans Before Takashimaya became a household name, Yaohan was the first departmental store to bring in a one-stop shopping concept to Singapore. It was also the first company in Singapore to put its staff through rigorous Japanese etiquette and customer service training, something that was lacking with other competitor stores. To cater with its growing popularity, it was also the first store to have night banking services by POSB and also the implementation of cashless payment services by NETS. Overseas Successes Yaohan was far more successful and popular overseas than in its founding country, Japan. This was largely due to the restrictive laws in Japan that made it challenging to set up new businesses. Growth At its peak, it had 450 outlets worldwide in 16 countries. Asian Crisis, 1997 Best Denki is a subsidiary of Yaohan and was known as “Yaohan’s Best” in the 80’s. It started operating in Singapore in 1985 and was renamed to Best Denki after Yaohan filed for bankruptcy during the 1997 Asian crisis. https://goodyfeed.com/if-youve-been-to-yaohan-youre-so-damn-old-but-anyways-herere-some-cool-facts-about-it/ 3 Shalala lala la la ~ 🌠
