i wonder if anyone really did a full economic environmental impact study on evs??

r evs really environmentally less polluting becos u still need to burn coal/ng/oil to generate the electricity. thus despite cutting down on usage of gasoline on one hand, there is still the increased in power generation. so in the end, the net impact could be negligible or even more carbon emission.

add to this, there is the mining of rare earth which is environmentally contaminating if not mined and processed properly. finally, there is the recycling of depleted rechargeable lithium-ion batteries to think of.

The lesser of both evils mean that EV car don't bring the pollution to the roads.

Emissions reduction on the cars first, then ships, then power generation....overall this forces power plants and engine makers to all stress on emissions control. After which the power suppliers need to consider renewable energy.

Production of EV cars is another questionable topic but at least it forces the energy production to be cleaner.

the maritime transport industry is actually way ahead on emission reduction measures than most people think.

the earliest measure being implemented was efficient cruising speed by taiwan's evergreen and was subsequently adopted by other liners.

then along came water dynamic hull designs followed by cogas engines.

all these came abt for the need for profitability and efficiency, so who says being environmentally friendly isnt profitable?

for evs to be 100% non-polluting, the only stable base power source to power them will be nuclear followed by solar energy.

i think the most important issue for evs is the need to overcome the long charging time needed and to upgrade the electricity grid to support the evs coming online.
