Anthony Wong Says His “Surname Isn’t Wong” When Taiwanese Celeb Huang An Criticises Him For Bringing Shame To His Family Name
He isn’t, um, Wong though.
When Hongkong actor Anthony Wong announced that he is “preparing” to become a Taiwanese citizen on May 12, he was warmly welcomed by most Taiwanese netizens… Except for China-based Taiwanese celebrity Huang An, who criticised Anthony for bringing shame to the Wong family name .
Although Huang An did not explicitly state the reason for his hate, netizens are guessing that Anthony’s political outspokenness had probably offended the pro-China star, who is well-known for his strong anti-Taiwan independence stance.
The 57-year-old Huang An is infamous for tattling on fellow celebs who he thought were spreading anti-Chinese sentiments, causing them to be blacklisted from job opportunities in China. One celeb he accused of being a pro-Taiwanese independence activist was K-pop group TWICE’s Taiwanese member Tzuyu, who, in 2016, had innocently waved the Taiwanese flag on South Korean TV.
Because of his accusation, the then-16-year-old Tzuyu had to publicly apologise to China for her actions, which sparked massive outrage in Taiwan.
But Anthony Wong is no Tzuyu.
In case you don't know, Anthony is probably as outspoken as Huang An when it comes to politics. But unlike Huang An, the 58-year-old actor is a very vocal pro-Hongkong democracy supporter, and his criticism of the Chinese government has led to him getting banned from working in China.
It's not like Anthony cares anyway.
After a fan alerted Anthony to Huang An’s family shame comment, the actor simply replied: “My surname isn’t Wong”.
And he's technically correct.
Anthony was originally born Anthony William Perry but he adopted his mother’s surname 'Wong' after his British dad, Frederick William Perry, walked out on the family when Anthony was four.
