    • who is government?: the untold story of public service           This video, inspired by Michael Lewis's book The Fifth Risk, challenges the common perception of government as a vast, impersonal machine by highlighting the essential, often invisible work performed by dedicated civil servants. Through five profiles, the video demonstrates how these individuals tackle critical tasks that are frequently overlooked or deemed too risky/unprofitable for the private sector.   Five Stories of Public Service:   1. Chris Mark and Mining Safety (1:00 - 3:15): A former political radical who became a mining engineer, Mark revolutionized mine safety by developing formulas that accurately predict roof failure. His work culminated in a historic milestone in 2016: the first year with zero deaths from roof falls in U.S. mines.   2. Ron Walters and the National Cemeteries (3:15 - 5:30): As the director of Memorial Affairs, Walters manages a dignified system for honoring veterans. His leadership of 2,300 employees and his apprenticeship programs for homeless veterans underscore the government's commitment to those who served.   3. Jarod Koopman and Cyber-Justice (5:30 - 7:45): Modernizing the IRS's investigative approach, Koopman's unit tracks cryptocurrency transactions to take down high-profile cybercriminals, most notably the operator of the Silk Road marketplace.   4. Pamela Wright and Accessible History (7:45 - 10:05): As the inaugural Chief Innovation Officer at the National Archives, Wright has digitized vast amounts of American history, inviting the public to participate through programs like the Citizen Archivist project and HistoryHub.   5. Vanessa Bailey and Extraterrestrial Discovery (10:05 - 12:20): Working at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Bailey is at the forefront of the search for exoplanets, continuing the legacy of pioneering scientists like Nancy Grace Roman to better understand our place in the universe.   Ultimately, the video concludes that these public servants are the true face of government, providing the quiet, methodical dedication that keeps the country running and preserves our future.
