Covid-19 situation in Malaysia is seeing signs of escalating as the figure breached the 400 mark for the first time

The 432 tally yesterday overtakes the record 317 cases reported on Saturday.


Health director-general Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah (pic) said the bulk of the new cases were detected in Kedah (231) and Sabah (130). Besides three imported cases from India, Kuwait and Myanmar, the others were local transmissions.

The Tembok cluster in Kedah, centred on the Alor Setar prison, reported a total of 224 cases. The cluster has so far accounted for 653 cases with one fatality.


In Sabah, the Bangau-Bangau cluster saw 39 new cases while the Benteng LD (Lahad Datu) cluster had three more cases. A total of 57 cases in the state were detected through the screening of symptomatic individuals.

Selangor recorded 34 new local cases, Kuala Lumpur (seven), Terengganu (five), Labuan (five), Perak (two), Putrajaya (two), Johor (two), Pahang (one), Melaka (one), Negri Sembilan (one) and Kelantan (one).

Dr Noor Hisham said 29 of the new cases involved those who recently returned from Sabah.

“This makes it a total of 235 Covid-19 cases since Sept 20 involving a travel history to Sabah, ” he said.

Three new clusters have been detected by the Health Ministry, with two involving individuals with recent travel history to Sabah.

Dr Noor Hisham said the Bah Tanjung cluster was detected in Kuala Nerus, Terengganu with its index case being a 46-year-old man who went to Semporna, Sabah, from Sept 10 to Sept 27.

“The patient has had a sore throat and fever since Sept 28. He tested positive for Covid-19 on Sept 30 and was admitted to the Hulu Terengganu Hospital in Kuala Berang. A screening of his contacts found six more positive cases, ” Dr Noor Hisham added.

The Bah Sintok cluster in Kubang Pasu, Kedah, started from a 23-year-old man who returned from Sabah on Sept 20. A screening on the man’s close contacts found 11 more individuals who tested positive.

The other new cluster, the Jeram cluster, has four positive cases so far and was traced to Kubang Pasu, Kedah.

Meanwhile, the number of patients in intensive care continues to rise with the increasing daily cases.

Dr Noor Hisham said 32 patients were being treated at intensive care units – up from 28 the previous day – with eight requiring ventilator support.

There are no new fatalities, keeping the country’s Covid-19 death toll at 137. A total of 57 patients were discharged.

Cumulatively, the total number of cases in the country since the outbreak began in January is 12,813.
