SINGAPORE — Angered by a passing comment another coffee-shop patron made about him, a man flew into a rage and assaulted the patron and his older brother.

On Monday (March 11), Lee Kim Teck, 60, was jailed five years, two months and 33 days after pleading guilty to three counts of voluntarily causing grievous hurt.

Another two counts of mischief were taken into consideration by District Judge Terence Tay during sentencing.

On the evening of April 8 last year, Lee was drinking beer with some friends at a coffee shop located on Bukit Batok Street 11.

The two brothers, Mr Ang Buk Kee, then 42, and Mr Paul Ang Buk Hoe, then 47, were seated nearby.

After his friends left, Lee asked if he could join the Ang brothers. Recognising him to be a fellow regular patron, they agreed. The three men drank and chatted.

Deputy Public Prosecutor (DPP) Zhou Yang said that during their conversation, Mr Ang Buk Kee made a comment about Lee and Mr Paul Ang "going to the coffee shop to drink for fun and pleasure”.

This angered Lee, who asked Mr Ang Buk Kee if he “wanted to fight”.

The latter backed down and Mr Paul Ang tried to calm Lee down, but Lee pushed Mr Paul Ang so hard he fell to the ground.

Lee then went for Mr Ang Buk Kee and after kicking him off the chair, he rained punches and kicks on him even as Mr Ang Buk Kee tried to get up from the floor.

Lee also attacked Mr Paul Ang when he tried to stop the attack.

Later, Lee picked up a beer bottle, while Mr Ang Buk Kee took a glass mug for self-defence, the court heard.

“(Lee) then used the glass beer bottle to hit Buk Kee’s head, causing the glass beer bottle to break upon impact,” DPP Zhou told the court.

He used the broken glass bottle to “jab at” Mr Paul Ang’s face and did the same to the younger Mr Ang.

Lee then threw a glass mug at Mr Ang Buk Kee’s head, causing him to collapse and lose consciousness. He continued to smash two more glass mugs on Mr Ang Buk Kee's head, before picking up a plastic chair and swinging it onto his head.

He assaulted Mr Paul Ang as well before finally leaving the coffee shop.

A medical examination revealed that Mr Ang Buk Kee suffered multiple facial cuts and fractures, among other injuries.

He underwent extensive surgery and was given hospitalisation leave for 38 days. A doctor’s report noted that he suffered permanent disfiguration of his face — despite surgery — and blurred vision.

His older brother similarly had lacerations and fractures and was given hospitalisation leave of 13 days.

PUNCHED PASSENGER ON BUS

The court heard that earlier on Dec 22, 2017, Lee struck an iPad out of a bus passenger’s hand and caused it to fall onto the floor. He also punched the man.

The victim, Mr Chua Sheng Tuck, then 36, was on bus service 174 travelling towards Bukit Batok and he was using his iPad. Lee boarded the bus later and stood beside Mr Chua.

Lee became “angry” at Mr Chua for using his iPad and told him in Hokkien not to use it.

When Mr Chua ignored him, Lee lashed out at him and the iPad's screen shattered after it fell.

As Lee alighted at the next stop, Mr Chua picked up the broken gadget and followed Lee off the bus. He confronted the older man about the incident, before calling the police.

This was when Lee punched Mr Chua’s face, stomach and left hip several times before running away.

Mr Chua gave chase and both men ended up at the void deck of a block of flats along Bukit Batok West Avenue 6. At one point, Lee turned around and punched Mr Chua in the head again before fleeing. He was later arrested.

The court heard that Lee committed this offence while on remission for earlier drug offences.

For voluntarily causing grievous hurt, Lee could have been jailed up to 10 years for each charge.
