  1. SINGAPORE - A revamped shopping mall in the East Coast and Katong area has plenty of surprises in store, including Singapore's first medical co-working space, a live theatre concept by Golden Village, and a dog club and daycare. The concepts are part of the offerings in the progressive reopening of Keppel Land's i12 Katong mall, which closed for renovations in early 2020. More from AsiaOneRead the condensed version of this story, and other top stories with NewsLite. The new-look centre began operations on Thursday (Dec 23), and will eventually have 180 stores when it has its grand opening in March next year. i12 Katong started out in the 1980s as Katong People's Complex before being relaunched with its current name in 2011. A Keppel unit paid about $56.6 million in 2018 to take full control of the centre, which comprises six levels of retail and lifestyle shops, and two basement levels of parking spaces. Keppel said the mall underpins its aim to improve its retail offerings and shape them "into future-ready, smart and sustainable retail hubs". The new mall will also incorporate energy-efficient features such as LED lighting and water-efficient fixtures. There will also be electric vehicle chargers in the carparks. There will also be a digestor to break down discarded food and other items and convert them into compost or liquid waste. The mall will also feature art exhibitions in partnership with local gallery Sound of Art. Some anchor tenants, such as CS Fresh, Golden Village and United World Preschool, will return, alongside new entrants such as aesthetic collaborative cafe Huggs Collective, ramen chain Ippudo, confectionery Janice Wong Singapore, foodcourt Malaysia Boleh and restaurants such as Prive and PS Cafe. A specially curated fashion lifestyle zone called Pop Palette will open in the first quarter of 2022 alongside Bistro Bytes, a kitchen that allows consumers to order food through the mall's app for delivery or takeaway. Mr Keith Low, Keppel Land's head of retail, said the new mall will present multi-experiential retail concepts and spaces powered by technology. Keppel Land has also collaborated with M1 to transform i12 Katong into a 5G-enabled mall. There were challenges due to the Covid-19 pandemic, said a Keppel Land spokesman, as renovations were slightly delayed. The pandemic also means that the mall will have more safety and hygiene features in place, such as air purifiers in lifts, automated handrail sanitisers and portable purifiers with hospital-grade filters to help remove microbes, bacteria, viruses and fungi in the air, he added. But tenants remain hopeful that despite the ongoing pandemic, the refreshed mall will bring back crowds. Mr Henry Tan, Ippudo's general manager of business development and marketing, said: "We are upbeat about opening Ippudo at i12 Katong during this period as we have confidence in the mall and as this is our first dining outlet in the East." Mr Tan Kim Leng, director of Fei Siong Group, which runs Malaysia Boleh!, added: "Katong is a vibrant district known for its heritage and food, and we are excited to introduce authentic Malaysian hawker fare to the people in the area." On the entertainment front, Golden Village will feature a new live segment in its theatres, which will include in-person performances and live streams of concerts, musicals and entertainment events. A Golden Village spokesman said: "Like all retail businesses, Golden Village has been impacted by the pandemic. But... we saw the need to improvise and tailor our services to meet the changing needs of consumers. "If the pandemic situation stabilises, and people start to return to a semblance of their everyday pre-Covid-19 lives, we are hopeful that things will get rosier. "Now, with our new offerings, we will not only attract moviegoers, but also another fresh group of audience - which will augur well for us in the long run, way beyond the pandemic."

  2. SINGAPORE - OCBC Bank on Thursday (Dec 23) warned that there has been a sharp rise in the number of phishing scams via SMS impersonating it, with 26 customers losing a total of $140,000 to these scams in 10 days, from Dec 8 to 17. It said: "For the month of December so far, OCBC Bank has detected and initiated the takedown of 45 phishing websites, about eight times more than the average takedown requests every month." More from AsiaOneRead the condensed version of this story, and other top stories with NewsLite. The bank said of the scams: "Members of the public have received unsolicited SMSes purportedly from the bank claiming there are issues with their bank accounts or credit cards. "The SMSes contain a link to a fraudulent website disguised as a legitimate bank website requesting banking information and passwords." OCBC said it would never send customers an SMS to inform them of an account closure or that they have been locked out of their accounts temporarily. It added that it would not send an SMS to customers with a link to reactivate their accounts as well. "These are always communicated via physical letters to prevent online fraud." The bank also said it is working with the Singapore Police Force's Anti-Scam Centre to try and help customers recover funds lost through these fraudulent transactions. It said it works closely with the police to detect and prevent scams too. However, it added that once the money has left the customer's account, the possibility of recovery is very low. OCBC said the first and strongest line of defence to combat scams lie with customers taking precautions to protect themselves. It gave the following advice to customers: • Never click on links provided in suspicious e-mails and SMSes. • Always type the bank's URL directly into the address bar of a Web browser or use its official mobile banking app. • Do not divulge banking login credentials or one-time passwords to anyone, or key such confidential information into unverified webpages. • Do not transfer money to people you do not know. • For those using iOS phones, download the ScamShield app that blocks unsolicited messages and calls. Customers who are in doubt about the authenticity of any SMSes received are advised to contact OCBC on 1800-363-3333, or +65-6363-3333 if overseas, for verification, it added.

  4. SINGAPORE: People who have taken their first two doses of the Sinovac-CoronaVac COVID-19 vaccine can now walk in to selected vaccination centres for their third dose without making an appointment, the Ministry of Health (MOH) said on Friday (Dec 24). MOH announced earlier this month that those who have taken two doses of the Sinovac vaccine are "strongly encouraged" to take their third dose of a COVID-19 vaccine before Dec 31, as long as it has been at least three months after their second dose. There are currently about 29,000 people who are due for their third dose after receiving two doses of the Sinovac vaccine, the ministry said. It added that these people are "strongly recommended" to take a Pandemic Special Access Route (PSAR) authorised mRNA vaccine for their third dose unless they are medically ineligible to do so. "This will help maintain the protection from the vaccine, as antibody levels from the Sinovac-CoronaVac vaccine decline rapidly within three to six months after completion of the second dose," said MOH. "Emerging international data indicates that while the mRNA vaccines, especially with booster vaccination, are protective against the Omicron variant, the Sinovac-CoronaVac and Sinopharm vaccines result in weaker neutralising activity and may not be protective." Taking the third dose of the three-dose primary vaccination regime will maintain the person's fully vaccinated status, said MOH. "Beyond this time interval, the individual’s vaccination status will revert to ‘additional dose needed’ and will be subject to the current vaccination-differentiated safe management measures if they do not do so," the Health Ministry added. People who have already received two doses of the Sinovac vaccine can walk in without an appointment to some vaccination centres for their third dose. This includes any vaccination centre offering the Moderna vaccine. If they are 60 and above, they can also walk in without an appointment to vaccination centres offering the Pfizer-BioNTech/Comirnaty vaccine. Raffles City Convention Centre, which offers the Sinovac vaccine, will also take in walk-ins until Dec 31. THREE VACCINATION CENTRES TO OFFER BOTH MRNA VACCINES From Dec 27, three vaccination centres will begin administering the Moderna COVID-19 vaccine, in addition to the currently available Pfizer-BioNTech/Comirnaty vaccine. The three centres are Bishan Community Club, Canberra Community Club and Tanjong Pagar Community Club. People who have booked a slot for either of the vaccines at any of these vaccination centres are required to keep to their bookings and chosen vaccine. "In view of the rise in Omicron cases globally and locally, there is a need to be boosted for better protection," said MOH. "Those who have had their second dose of Pfizer-BioNTech/Comirnaty or Moderna vaccine at least five months ago, but have not yet received their SMS notification, can walk into any vaccination centre for a booster vaccination without the need for a prior appointment."
