♻️ Updates to Singapore’s Beverage Container Return Scheme (Return Right)
Announced Aug 6, 2026 by BCRS Ltd, responding to public complaints about machine glitches, poor usability and recognition issues.
✅ Key Machine Improvements
- Redesigned UI: Made the “Tap for Refund” button far more visible
- Longer refund window: Timeout extended from 30 seconds → 1 minute
- Louder audio alerts: Boosted volume for successful transactions/card taps
- Technical fixes: Reducing avoidable errors, recalibrating container recognition, streamlining refund process
📊 Scheme Progress So Far
- Launched 1 April 2026, transition period ends 30 Sep 2026
- >1 million transactions, 5.5 million containers returned (55% plastic, 45% metal)
- Average per transaction rose from 2.8 → 5.9 containers
- Initial 1,070 machines deployed; 90% of HDB residents within 5-min walk
- +300 more machines coming to industrial estates, IHLs, tourist spots & worker dormitories; on track to double return points to ~2,000 in Year 1
🤝 Outreach & Support Efforts
- Seniors workshops: 12 sessions across Active Ageing Centres, helped 430+ seniors learn to use machines
- Roadshows: 6 heartland supermarket demos; 400+ more scheduled. Return Right Buddies assist shoppers & train staff
- Ambassadors: Deployed at busy HDB void deck machines
- School & campus programmes to engage youth & students
- Working with NEA to guide retailers, minimarts, F&B operators on scheme rules
📢 Background Complaints
Users reported machines failing to scan barcodes, missing refunds (e.g. counted fewer containers than inserted), rejecting valid marked containers, inconsistent operation. Tests also found containers sometimes only accepted when barcode facing up—operator noted this shouldn’t be required and is refining recognition.
Each eligible container gives 10¢ deposit refund via EZ-Link/SimplyGo/PAYLAH!. Only containers with official deposit mark qualify for refund once transition completes Oct 1 .
