SINGAPORE — We couldn’t resist taking a bite when we stumbled upon 7-11’s conveniently packaged bak chang, or rice dumplings. Made by Joo Chiat Kim Choo, the halal Kim Choo Kid dumplings come in two flavours: Nonya Chicken and Salted Chicken.

The easy-to-hold triangular packaging doesn’t come with the messy oily leaves we all love to peel off. Each dumpling comes in a plastic container and a peel-off foil. Pop it into the microwave to re-heat and it’s good to be served immediately.

Each rice dumpling, which retails for S$2.80, is handcrafted daily in ISO 22000-certified kitchens at Joo Chiat Kim Choo.

Note that Joo Chiat Kim Choo is unrelated to Kim Choo Kueh Chang, the family-run institution based in Katong.

This is what we thought about the taste:

“Tastes almost like leaf-wrapped rice dumplings. The dumpling crumbles a bit easily but it's nice, overall” - Joel.

“The flavour and taste are pretty good, though the texture of the glutinous rice is a little less firm than dumplings that come leaf-wrapped” - Yong Ping.
