SINGAPORE: A full-time national serviceman trespassed into Nanyang Technological University (NTU) and took photos of men showering on campus. He also took photos and videos of other men performing sex acts in toilets at NTU and Jurong Point. Lau Jun Wei, 20, pleaded guilty on Monday (Mar 9) to two counts of criminal trespass and one count of using insulting behaviour with intent to cause alarm. An additional four charges of making an obscene film and criminal trespass will be taken into consideration for sentencing. The court heard that Lau was in NTU "hanging out with his friend" on Feb 24 last year when he needed to use the toilet. He headed to the toilet and as a dustbin was keeping the door ajar, did not have to use a key fob - an electronic device used by hall residents to enter secure places - to get in. When he was done, Lau heard the sound of running water and realised someone was showering in the last toilet cubicle, said Deputy Public Prosecutor Thiam Jia Min. He went to the cubicle, turned on his camera and placed his phone over the top of the door to film the naked man showering. "The accused then took two photographs and one video of the unknown man fully naked and showering, as he was curious as to how men looked like when they showered," said Ms Thiam. MADE OBSCENE VIDEOS AT JURONG POINT Other than the offences committed at NTU, Lau also went to nearby Jurong Point, where he took obscene videos. On Apr 3 last year, he took two videos of himself masturbating another man in a toilet at Jurong Point. A few weeks later on Apr 16, he returned to NTU and took photos and videos of a man masturbating inside a toilet cubicle. Days later, Lau went to a friend's dormitory room in NTU, where he stayed overnight. He went to use the toilet when he realised someone was showering in a cubicle. He went over and took two photos of the naked victim. This time, when Lau was leaving the toilet, he was confronted by one of the victim's friends, who had caught Lau holding his phone over the top of the cubicle door. The victim eventually called the police, feeling alarmed, distressed and traumatised by Lau's actions. Because of what happened, the victim eventually moved out of the hall. Lau's final offence took place on Jul 14 last year, when he filmed a man masturbating another man in a toilet at Jurong Point. The prosecution said it was not objecting to the calling of a probation suitability report, but reserves its position on sentencing until after the report is produced. She noted that Lau has expressed remorse. Lau's lawyer said his client had no previous criminal convictions, was young and has mental disorders. The judge called for a probation suitability report and adjourned sentencing to Apr 6.

SINGAPORE: A serial underwear thief who has been in and out of court since 1981 for related offences was on Thursday (Mar 5) jailed for one-and-a-half years on more theft charges. Yeow Mun Seng, 57, was also given an additional 65 days' jail because he had reoffended while on remission for similar offences of stealing underwear. Yeow pleaded guilty to two charges of theft, with another four charges taken into consideration. The court heard that Yeow was released from prison on remission from Dec 27, 2019 to Feb 29, 2020. He had been sentenced to 16 months' jail in 2018. He began breaking the law again immediately after his release, taking a red banner worth S$160 from the corridor of a flat in Woodlands on Dec 27 last year. Yeow had been walking along the corridor looking for something to steal when he saw the red banner, said Deputy Public Prosecutor Grace Chua. He took the banner and sniffed it, before leaving with it. He later threw it away into a rubbish chute. The item was never recovered. On Jan 5, Yeow stole a red bra from a common corridor at another block in Woodlands. The next day, Yeow stole a green bra belonging to a student that had been hung out to dry on a rack outside a flat at yet another block in Woodlands. He looked around to make sure no one was around, before taking the bra, sniffing it and leaving with it. He later threw the S$30 bra away at a rubbish chute. It was never recovered. Yeow was arrested on Jan 7. Several items were found in his possession, including a skirt, 13 ladies' tops, 21 dresses, two bras, 11 pairs of panties and 13 pieces of cloth. He could not give a satisfactory explanation as to how these items came into his possession, and they are suspected to be stolen property. PROSECUTOR LISTS HIS PAST OFFENCES Deputy Public Prosecutor Grace Chua asked for at least 20 months' jail and an additional enhanced sentence of 65 days for offending while on remission. She pointed out Yeow's list of offences over the years from 1981: He was jailed in 1981 for fraudulent possession of property, and more than five times again after that for theft and fraudulent possession of property. Several of these offences involved theft of underwear, and Yeow was given escalating jail terms for each conviction. Ms Chua said the offences committed while on remission were the same as the ones he had been sentenced for in 2018. Yeow, who was unrepresented, asked for leniency and a lighter sentence. The judge asked: "On what basis? When you have been reoffending and reoffending. You must recognise that every time you come back for court for a similar offence, your sentence is going to get higher and higher. It's never going to get lower and lower." For theft, he could have been jailed for up to three years, fined, or both.

SINGAPORE: While on probation for previous sexual offences, a young man sexually abused four girls and raped a fifth. A psychiatrist told the court that Muhammad Ashahann Hairudin had displayed deviant sexual behaviour in picking young adolescent females. Ashahann, now 20, was sentenced on Monday (Mar 2) to 12 years' jail and six strokes of the cane, an imprisonment term longer than the minimum 10 years' jail asked for by the prosecution. The court heard that Ashahann had previously been sentenced to two years' probation in February 2017 for two counts of molesting a 12-year-old girl and two counts of sexual penetration of a 14-year-old girl. FOUND FIRST VICTIM A WEEK AFTER PROBATION SENTENCE Just a week after being given probation in February 2017, Ashahann, who was 17 at the time, came across a 15-year-old girl's profile on Instagram and contacted her. He met up with her in early March 2017, and later that month, suggested that they head to his house. He had unprotected sex with the victim, who had hoped that he would become her boyfriend, said the prosecution. That same month, Ashahann targeted another 15-year-old girl, whom he met playing street soccer in the neighbourhood. The girl went to Ashahann's home when no one was home, but pushed his hands away when he tried to pull her pants down. She told him that she did not want to have sex with him, but Ashahann persisted. He then had sex with her. The victim told him again that she did not want to have sex as she was menstruating, and Ashahann stopped after failing to convince her otherwise. TARGETED TWO OTHER MINORS He targeted two other girls in March 2017. They were his relative's 12-year-old friend and his relative's girlfriend, who was also a minor. While the 12-year-old friend was at Ashahann's home, Ashahan asked the girl to fellate him, but she refused. Ashahann then had sex with the 12-year-old girl "with her consent", court documents said. While this was ongoing, Ashahann's relative was trying to have sex with his girlfriend for the first time, after Ashahann encouraged them to. Ashahann showed them how to have sex and penetrated his relative's girlfriend with his finger. The offences escalated to rape a year later in March 2018. RAPE OFFENCES OCCURRED A YEAR LATER He came to know the victim, a 16-year-old girl, as they were in the same school, which was not named in court documents. He invited her to his condominium to do homework by the swimming pool. The victim wore a swimsuit under her clothes and went to Ashahann's condominium - which was not named in court documents - at about 1.30pm on Mar 17, 2018. She did not intend to swim as she was menstruating, said Deputy Public Prosecutor Asoka Markandu. After the girl did some homework, Ashahann led her to a toilet for the disabled near the pool. When the victim realised where they were going, she grew alarmed and stepped away from Ashahann, sensing that he wanted sex. She told him that she did not want to follow him, but Ashahann ignored her and dragged her to the toilet. Despite her struggle, Ashahann was too strong for her, and the victim began to cry, telling him repeatedly that she did not want to follow him. Ashahann ignored her pleas and carried her to the toilet. The girl tried to break free a few times but was blocked by Ashahann. He forced the victim to perform a sex act on him and then raped her. He then washed the blood and semen away before forcing himself on the girl again and raping her a second time. The victim threw her bloodied swimsuit away and changed before going home. She told her friends about what happened and said she had suicidal thoughts. She met her friends the next day and they accompanied her to file a police report. Ashahann pleaded guilty on Monday to one charge of rape and three charges of sexual penetration of a minor. Another six charges were taken into consideration. ACCUSED HAS NO MENTAL DISORDER A psychiatrist with the Institute of Mental Health found that Ashahann did not suffer from any mental disorder, paedophilia or any paraphilic disorder. While Ashahann was of "low average intelligence", he did not suffer from any intellectual disability, the court heard. He was found to have a moderate to high risk of sexual reoffending, with the psychiatrist highlighting that he displayed deviant sexual behaviour in choosing young girls as preferred sexual partners. He also displayed "a lack of victim empathy as he failed to consider if his actions would have any traumatic effect on his victims in the future". The prosecution asked for at least 10 years' jail and six strokes of the cane, noting that Ashahann was a "hardened and recalcitrant sexual offender". He added that Ashahann had reoffended just a month after being sentenced to probation, and said there was an escalation in his crimes, culminating in rape. The rape victim suffered pain and became suicidal, a situation that was averted only after her friends intervened, said Mr Asoka. He said the aggravating factor pertained to the manner of the rape. "On the facts, the victim was raped over the course of about an hour. The victim was also subjected to further degradation when she was forced to fellate the accused, before being raped," Mr Asoka added. "The fact that the victim was menstruating was plainly obvious to the accused, and yet it did not stop him from raping her the second time. (Ashahann's) lack of victim empathy is deeply disturbing." Defence lawyer Ranadhir Gupta asked the judge to call for probation and reformative training reports, but Justice Aedit Abdullah did not accede to these requests. JUDGE FINDS PROSECUTOR'S REQUESTED SENTENCE A BIT LOW The judge questioned the prosecution on the sentence they were asking for, noting that it was "a bit low". The prosecutor told the court that Ashahann will be returning to the state courts this week to face proceedings for breaching his probation conditions. He said the prosecution intends to call for an additional two strokes of the cane for that. The judge said he did not find Ashahann's youth a substantial factor in his favour, adding that he found imprisonment and caning the appropriate punishment. He said the sentence was "not crushing" given the circumstances, and that the sentence reflects the overall criminality. Ashahann said he did not intend to appeal the sentence, and was granted time to speak to his family members after the hearing. For rape, he could have been sentenced to a maximum 20 years' jail and a fine or caning.

Man jailed for posting one ex-girlfriend’s sex video online, assaulting a second SINGAPORE — A man attacked an ex-girlfriend and threatened another as well as a married woman with whom he was flirting, all because he was angry with them. On one occasion, Muhamad Farid Mohd Fakhri lost his temper because one woman wanted to break up with him and he became convinced that she was cheating on him. He then punched her in the ribs, the back of her head and her chest. The 29-year-old was sentenced to three months and four weeks’ jail on Thursday (Feb 27) and ordered to pay a fine of S$2,000. He has to serve another 10 days behind bars if he cannot pay it. He pleaded guilty to two counts of criminal intimidation and one charge of causing hurt, as well as another charge of committing mischief towards a passenger while working as a Grab driver. The court heard that Farid got to know all three women through Facebook. In 2017, he befriended the first victim, aged 19 or 20 at the time, on the social media platform and they began dating. Over the course of their relationship, he left some of his belongings at her home. On May 2, 2017, she asked him to retrieve his things because she wanted to break up with him. When he went over, he reacted violently to her request to end the relationship and continued to stay there. Her family was abroad at the time. Sure that she was cheating on him, he spent the night looking through text messages on her phone before assaulting her out of anger. He left the flat only on the afternoon of May 4, 2017 to go to work. He did not return. The victim developed headaches and occasional dizziness, but she did not seek help until two days later when her family returned to Singapore. Her father took her to Gleneagles Hospital, where she was found to have several bruises on her chest and a haematoma (leakage of blood due to injury to blood vessel wall) over her forehead. Farid struck again after getting to know another woman in September 2017. On Dec 4 that year, he threatened to “post or upload something online” if she continued to ignore his messages, Deputy Public Prosecutor Amanda Han told the court. Farid then posted a video on his Facebook page of them having sex, with the caption, “Stay tune [sic] for more”. She was aware that he had taken the video but did not know he kept it. She immediately told her sister-in-law about it and she called the police. At the same time, the victim took a screenshot of Farid’s post and made a police report. Still, that did not stop him from targeting a third woman — who was married — in November 2018. He had randomly added her on Facebook before they exchanged mobile phone numbers. About a week later, he suggested that they send each other nude photographs of themselves. She agreed since she was romantically interested in him. After they did this, he asked her to send more photos but she refused. He was unhappy but said that he would ask her again the next day. True to his word, he started badgering her the next day, then sent her previous photos back to her and said that he would post them on Facebook and “bring shame to her”. He also threatened to show her husband their conversation. When she said that she would report him to the authorities, he told her to go ahead and that he would post the photos on Facebook. She eventually filed a police report. In June 2018, while working as a Grab driver, Farid picked up a 48-year-old man and his girlfriend along Keong Saik Road in Chinatown. The couple noticed that he was blasting music at an extremely loud volume and asked if he could turn it down, but he ignored the request and reminded the other man that that was his car, insinuating that he is free to do what he wants in there. When the man began taking a video of Farid with his mobile phone, intending to lodge a complaint with Grab about his behaviour, Farid asked him to get out of the car if he was unhappy and said that he would cancel the ride. The man asked him to take them home but Farid parked by the side of the road and told them to get out. The couple did so and the man slammed the door to express his unhappiness. Farid got out of the car, snatched the man’s mobile phone out of his hand and hurled it onto the ground, telling him it was retaliation for slamming the car door. The mobile phone — an iPhone X valued at about S$1,800 — was completely shattered. Farid has not made restitution for it.

A man with a strained relationship with his wife turned his sexual urges on his underage daughter, first molesting her when she was 13 and eventually raping her twice. The crimes were exposed after a teacher asked the victim, now 16, why she wanted to run away from home. The 50-year-old father, who cannot be named in order to protect the identity of the victim, was sentenced to 24 years' jail on Wednesday (Feb 26). The court heard that the man was a 48-year-old technician at the time of the offences and lived with his 39-year-old wife and two children in a flat. All the family members are China nationals with Singapore permanent residency. The man had had a strained relationship with his wife for many years and the two of them adopted separate sleeping arrangements, said Deputy Public Prosecutors April Phang, Andrew Low and Jamie Pang. He began harbouring intentions on his daughter as an outlet for his sexual urges, first touching her inappropriately in early 2018 when she was 13. FIRST MOLESTED HER WHEN GIRL WAS 13 While the girl was using the computer, he hugged her from the back and molested her. The girl was afraid and did not know what to do, eventually walking away. The man became bolder after this, said Mr Low. He demanded that his daughter lay beside him on his bed on Sunday mornings while the rest of the family were asleep. She complied as she was afraid of defying him, but lay with her back to him. Her father would then turn her around and molest her, the court heard. Even though she did not consent to her father's actions, the girl complied because she was afraid of antagonising the man. He had a bad temper and had previously disciplined her by beating or slapping her, court documents said. In February 2018, the girl told her older brother that their father had been touching her inappropriately. Even though the brother sensed that his sister was scared, he told her to reject their father the next time it happened and did not offer any assistance to her, said the prosecution. The sexual abuse continued for months between early 2018 to May 2018, with the man kissing the victim on her lips, sticking his tongue in her mouth, molesting her and making her perform sexual acts on him. A FEW MONTHS AFTER HE STARTED TO MOLEST HER, HE RAPED HER He first raped the girl when she was 13, on a Sunday in March 2018, when she woke up early for art class. He did so on his bed and told his daughter not to shout if she felt pain, so that the rest of the family would not be woken up. The girl was a virgin and felt some pain, but did not show her emotions as she was too afraid of her father, the court heard. After this, the girl felt an itch in her private parts and told her father, who bought her a vaginal wash. He raped her a second time on a Sunday morning in April 2018, this time without a condom. He later found out his daughter had not washed her underwear, which still had his stains on it. Shocked, he washed the underwear himself. When she missed her period, he bought her a pregnancy test kit. She tested negative. The man later told police that he did not bother using protection as he found it "troublesome" to get it from the master bedroom. He also said he thought it would be "safe" based on what he knew of his daughter's period cycle. TEACHER FOUND OUT ABOUT THE OFFENCES The offences came to light in October 2018 when the victim's co-form teacher spoke to her, after finding out that the victim wanted to run away from home. After much probing, the victim told the teacher that her father had touched her inappropriately. The police were alerted to the case and the man was subsequently arrested. A psychiatric assessment of the victim found that she had obeyed her father as she felt she had no choice and was fearful of him. The report also stated that the girl sometimes "feels breathless for no reason" and that she has been seeing her school counsellor. The man pleaded guilty on Wednesday to two charges of rape, with another eight charges of molest taken into consideration. The prosecution had pushed for at least 23 years' jail and an additional year in lieu of 24 strokes of the cane. HE EXPLOITED DAUGHTER'S FEAR OF HIM: PROSECUTION "Instead of offering the victim the care, protection and guidance as is expected of a father, the accused abused his parental authority and exploited his daughter's fear of him for his own sexual pleasure," they said. He started off with molesting the victim and grew to the more egregious offences of rape, they said. Defence lawyer Sherman Ho asked instead for 20 years' jail, with no additional term in lieu of caning. He said his client had no previous convictions and that there were only two aggravating factors in the case - the youth of the victim and the accused's abuse of authority. Justice Aedit Abdullah said he would not be imposing an additional jail term in lieu of caning as he felt the circumstances did not call for it. The man could have been jailed up to 20 years for each count of rape and fined. He cannot be caned as he is 50.

SINGAPORE: A repeat sex offender preyed on four underage girls between the ages of 13 and 15, holding weekly meetings and coming up with a roster for the girls to perform sexual acts on him. Three of the girls are exceptionally vulnerable victims as they are in the "low average range of intelligence", while one girl had suicidal thoughts and blames herself for the incidents, saying she was "very dumb". Malaysian Simon Wong Choy Chuan, 32, pleaded guilty on Monday (Feb 24) to four charges of sexual penetration of a minor, with another 24 charges taken into consideration. The court heard that Wong, who has been committing similar offences since he was 19, was 30 at the time of the offences and working part-time at his mother's maid agency. He met the first victim, a 15-year-old girl, through a mutual friend on Facebook in August 2017. Wong asked the girl to introduce him to more female friends, and the girl introduced him to the other three victims, including her best friend. Wong lied to the first victim that he was only 21 and began chatting her up, before entering into a romantic relationship with her a month after they got acquainted. He then sexually exploited the girl by making her masturbate him, fellate him and have sex with him. ASKED THE FIRST VICTIM TO INTRODUCE HIM TO OTHER GIRLS Wong met the other three victims - then 13 and 14 - in December 2017. He lied to them that he was 19 and the second in command in a gang. He did this as he knew they were gullible and wanted them to fear him, so that they would not dare to report him to the police in the future, said Deputy Public Prosecutor Chee Ee Ling. Wong also asked all four girls to join his "gang" and pay him S$10 daily in membership fees, in return for protection against bullies at school. In total, he received about S$130 from the girls. Wong made the first victim teach her friends how to carry out acts of male masturbation and fellatio. The girl was reluctant at first as she did not want to involve her friends, but complied because she did not want her boyfriend to get angry. Wong also claimed to have clairvoyant abilities in order to persuade the other three girls to comply with his sexual demands. For example, he "predicted" that ill fortune would befall the fourth victim if the second victim did not fellate and masturbate him, and the 14-year-old girl agreed while they were at a car park in January 2018. He also asked the second and fourth victims to be his girlfriends as well. WEEKLY ROSTER FOR SEX ACTS As part of his scheme, Wong came up with a weekly roster for the victims to perform sexual acts on him, holding gang meetings at least once a week at void decks or multistorey car parks. On one occasion in January 2018, Wong held his gang meeting with all four victims at a multistorey car park at Block 351, Canberra Road. He was playing the Mobile Legends online game with the third victim when he told her she should do "the thing" for him, referring to masturbation. When the second victim went home, Wong took the remaining three girls to the sixth floor of the car park, where he urged the first victim to teach the third one how to fellate him. The third victim, who was then only 13, carried out the acts at Wong's request. A week after this incident, the third victim stopped going for the gang meetings and cut off contact with Wong. She made a police report on Feb 14, 2018, concerned for her safety as Wong kept calling her, asking her to attend gang meetings. The police uncovered the offences, and the victims were taken to the Child Guidance Clinic for psychiatric assessment. EFFECT OF THE OFFENCES ON THE VICTIMS The second victim was found to have failed nearly all her subjects in 2018, and her mother said that this was due to the stress from the police case. "She blamed herself for the incidents, saying that she was 'very dumb'," said the prosecutor. "She only realised these acts were wrong after she received sex education in school. She became emotionally distressed and had suicidal thoughts." The third victim thinks about the incidents sometimes and tries to forget them, and feels "weird" and "not okay" about engaging in sexual acts with Wong. The fourth victim said she "did not really want to" engage in the sex acts, but did not dare to lodge a police report. An intellectual assessment also found that the first victim was "functioning in the extremely low range of intelligence", while the second and third victims were in the low average range. That they were vulnerable victims was one of the aggravating factors raised by prosecutor Ms Chee. She urged the judge to call for a corrective training suitability report for Wong, saying he had similar convictions since he was 19 in 2007. WONG'S LIST OF CONVICTIONS That year, he had consensual sex with his then-15-year-old girlfriend, and was given a year's probation. When he was 25 in 2013, he was convicted of more than 10 charges of sexual penetration of a minor, against five teenage victims. He was sentenced to more than six years' jail and six strokes of the cane. Ms Chee said Wong's modus operandi is quite similar, getting acquainted with the victims through the Internet or mutual acquaintances. He also lied to them that he was "easily possessed by spirits" and while "possessed", threatened them into performing multiple sex acts on him. The current offences were committed within two months of his release from prison, said Ms Chee. He was also assessed by the Institute of Mental Health to have a high risk of sexual reoffending. Defence lawyer Nakoorshah A K said he acknowledged that the case was fairly egregious, and "not something easy to mitigate for". The only real mitigating point he said he had was that Wong had pleaded guilty and spared the victims the pain of coming to court. "My instructions are to ask for a regular imprisonment term," said the lawyer. Wong wrote a letter of mitigation, asking the court not to revoke his permanent residency. "That's not up to me," said District Judge Christopher Goh. "You are hoping for a short sentence ... The kind of sentence the court will impose will be in the higher range." He called for a corrective training report and adjourned sentencing to Mar 20.
