Chinese Zoo Dyes Chow Chows To Resemble Pandas
A zoo in China's Jiangsu province has caught people's attention on Chinese social media. According to a zoo ticket on weibo, the animal is called panda dogs (熊猫犬), and the public can meet them during China's five-day Labour Day holiday from May 1 to 5.

According to Chinese media Jiupai News, tens of thousands of people visited the panda dogs every day from May 1 to 5. However, the animals' popularity saw the zoo criticised, with some accusing it of misleading visitors into believing they would be meeting real pandas.
The sign did not hide the fact that the “panda dogs” are not a species of panda but dogs dyed to look like them. Although they weren’t actual pandas, there were many tourists waiting to see them.

In response, a zoo staff confirmed with Jiupai News that the panda dogs are actually chow chows whose new look only debuted during the Labour Day holiday.
According to another staff, the zoo got the idea of dyeing the dogs into pandas online. The staff told Jiangsu News:
This way, we will be able to add more fun into the zoo and boost footfall.

He also added that the zoo was unable to house real giant pandas because of its relatively small size. As for dyeing the dogs, one of the staff also did not see ethical concerns:
Normal individuals also dye their hair. As such, if dogs grow out their hair, they could also dye it. This is the same as human hair.
Some questioned whether dyeing the dogs would constitute animal abuse, as some dyes might contain harmful chemicals.

Reporter consulted a veterinarian, Mr Shi, to ask if there were any risks. He said a dye job should be left to a professional, as long as the pet does not lick their fur during the dyeing process, it will not be a big problem and it will be fine after the dye dries:
The risk of pet fur dyeing is the same as that of human hair dyeing. There is a risk of damaging the fur, skin and fur follicles. From this perspective, it is not recommended to do it.
