  1. An 83-year-old woman, who was living alone in an HDB flat in Ghim Moh, was found dead on Aug. 30, 2022, after failing to answer the door, a coroner's court heard on Feb. 27, according to Lianhe Zaobao. The deceased woman's granddaughter was knocking on the door that day, but no one answered. It was also revealed in court that the deceased, surnamed Chua (transliteration), had seven children, but none of them had visited her since 2019, reported Zaobao. The elderly woman was reportedly last seen by her neighbour in June 2022. What happened According to Zaobao, on the day that Chua's body was found, her granddaughter came to visit and knocked on the door for 10 minutes. When Chua failed to answer the door, the granddaughter tried to push the wooden door open to find out what was going on, knowing that Chua suffered from hearing loss. However, through the gap, Chua's granddaughter only noticed multiple flies and a foul smell coming out of the living room, reported Zaobao. Chua's granddaughter immediately called the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) for assistance. Upon arriving at the scene, SCDF personnel entered the flat by force and discovered Chua's highly-decomposed body in between the kitchen and bathroom, Zaobao reported. Her face was reportedly in an advanced stage of decomposition that it was nearly impossible to identify her. Investigating officers were only able to establish Chua's identity after extracting a portion of her bone marrow from her body and comparing it to that of her son's, reported Zaobao. Last visit by children in 2019 It was also revealed in court that Chua had seven children, but none of them had visited her since 2019, reported Zaobao. According to Chua's relatives, she did not want her children to visit her and only maintained a close relationship with her granddaughter. Besides Chua's granddaughter, who visited her occasionally, a social worker had also been keeping an eye on the elderly woman, according to Zaobao. However, when the social worker visited Chua's home in April 2022, no one answered the door. No foul play suspected According to Zaobao, investigations showed that there was only one key to Chua's flat, and there were no signs of forced entry. The police have reportedly ruled out the possibility of foul play. It was also reported that Chua suffered from paranoid delusions, as well as various chronic diseases, including stroke, high blood pressure, and diabetes. While the pathologist found no external injuries on Chua's body, the cause of her death could not be definitively determined as a result of her body's advanced stage of decomposition, according to Zaobao. The coroner reportedly recorded the case as an open verdict and offered condolences to Chua's family members. https://mothership.sg/2023/02/woman-dead-ghim-moh-flat/

  3. A Minecraft player has achieved a feat no one else has, simply by walking to the end of the game’s procedurally generated map. As spotted by Jake Lucky (opens in new tab) on Twitter, Twitch streamer Mystical Midget started the grand trek to the end of Minecraft on January 31, 2021. Since then, they have managed to walk 32,000,000 blocks over 2,500 hours of playtime. Like many players who have picked up the challenge, the streamer is playing on an old Minecraft Beta build. Specifically, they were using Minecraft Beta 1.7.3, which is now 11 years old. You can see when the streamer accomplished the feat below, cheered on by their pals. So it goes when players try to stretch what Minecraft is mechanically capable of, the game’s engine begins to struggle to load in all the surrounding textures, though you don’t see much of that as the streamer’s character is looking at their feet. Eventually, the game gives up, and the streamer tumbles through the map, drowning in general nothingness as their avatar lets out Minecraft's signature ‘oof!’ numerous times before perishing while everyone watching the streamer cheers. The pilgrimage to Minecraft’s ‘Far Lands’ isn’t about reaching a destination but a state where a glitch starts to warp the terrain around you. That glitch is only present in some of the older versions of Minecraft, and you’re typically looking at travelling over 12 million blocks (opens in new tab) before you even see it – if you make it that far. https://www.gamesradar.com/minecraft-player-spends-2500-hours-walking-to-the-end-of-the-game-dies-immediately/?utm_source=facebook.com&utm_medium=social&utm_content=gamesradar&utm_campaign=socialflow
  4. Haunting 'mermaid' mummy discovered in Japan is even weirder than scientists expected The head and torso of the mummy, which likely belonged to a small monkey. The head and torso of the mummy, which likely belonged to a small monkey. A centuries-old mummified "mermaid" that scientists recently revealed to be a gruesome doll of animal parts is even weirder than previously thought, new findings show. In 2022, researchers discovered the mermaid, which is around 12 inches (30.5 centimeters) long, lying inside a sealed wooden box within a Japanese temple, located in Okayama Prefecture. At the time, researchers thought it was made from the torso and head of a monkey sewed onto a decapitated fish's body. The haunting hybrid, which resembles a Ningyo from Japanese mythology — a fish-like creature with a human head that is fabled to help cure disease and increase longevity — had previously been displayed in a glass case at the temple for people to worship, before being stored away more than 40 years ago. A letter inside the mummy's box claims that the specimen was caught by a fisher sometime between 1736 and 1741, but it was likely created decades after that as a hoax to sell to affluent people wanting to improve their health or live longer lives. Researchers from the Kurashiki University of Science and the Arts (KUSA) in Japan took possession of the mermaid in early February 2022 (with permission from the temple's priests) and began studying the eerie artifact using a range of techniques including X-ray and CT (computerized tomography) scanning, radiocarbon dating, electron microscopy and DNA analysis. Related: Haunting images of 'zombie' shark and other decaying aquarium animals revealed in eerie footage A CT scan of the mermaid. On Feb. 7, the team finally released its findings in a KUSA statement (translated from Japanese). And what they found out about the mermaid was even more bizarre than expected. The results showed that the mermaid's torso did not belong to a monkey but instead was made predominantly from cloth, paper and cotton that was held together by metal pins running from the neck to lower back. It had also been painted with a paste made from a mix of sand and charcoal. However, the torso was covered in components stripped from other animals. Mammal hair and fish skin, likely from a pufferfish, covered parts of the arms, shoulders, neck and cheeks. The mermaid's jaw and teeth were also likely taken from a predatory fish, and its claws were made from keratin, meaning they likely came from a real but unidentifiable animal. A digital reconstruction of the mermaid. The lower half of the mermaid did come from a fish, likely a species of croaker — a ray-finned fish that makes a croaking sound with its swim bladder, which helps it control its buoyancy. The researchers were not able to identify any complete DNA from the mermaid, but radiocarbon dating of the scales indicated they could date back as far as the early 1800s. However, it also shows that the tricksters behind the creation also put much more effort into stitching together the counterfeit creature than expected. There are 14 other "mermaids" that have been found in Japan, and the team now hopes to analyze others for comparison. https://sg.news.yahoo.com/news/haunting-mermaid-mummy-discovered-japan-174113683.html?guccounter=1
