  1. Three students were killed and five others injured after a gunman opened fire on the Michigan State University (MSU) campus on Monday night. The victims were all students at the university, police said, and the injured remain in critical condition. The police said a caller's tip led them to the suspected gunman, who died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. The suspect, who has since been identified, had no ties to MSU. "We can confirm that the 43-year-old suspect had no affiliation to the university. He was not a student, faculty, or staff, current or previous," Chris Rozman of the Michigan State University Police said. Questions still remain about the motive of the gunman, who was identified as 43-year-old Anthony McRae. "We have absolutely no idea what the motive was at this point," Mr Rozman said. The names of the victims have not yet been released. Dr Denny Martin, the Chief Medical Officer of Sparrow Hospital, where the victims were taken for treatment, said four of the injured required surgery and one was taken to critical care. All five remain in hospital. "This is something that we practice for very often, but never want to do," said a visibly emotional Dr Martin at Tuesday's news conference. The gunman opened fire shortly before 20:30 local time (01:30 GMT) at Berkey Hall, a building located north of the MSU campus in the city of East Lansing. Responding officers found multiple students who were injured - two of whom died on the scene. Police said the suspect then walked over to the nearby MSU Union building, where they received several more reports of gunshots. The third victim died inside the building, they said. The suspect then quickly fled the scene, sparking a large manhunt involving hundreds of officers. He was found nearly four hours later at 11:45 local time in the City of Lansing, around three miles (4.82 km) northwest of campus, after police released a photo of him and a citizen called in a tip that helped locate him. The photo, taken from surveillance footage, showed the suspect wearing a denim jacket, a navy baseball cap and red trainers. Image source, MSU Police Image caption, A picture was released of the suspect before his death was announced As the manhunt was ongoing, students were told to "shelter in place". Some reported on social media that they were hiding. One - Drew Russ, an 18-year-old from Los Angeles - was watching Star Wars with friends at his dorm when a deluge of text messages arrived. He and everyone on his floor in the dorm, which is about a mile from Berkey Hall, stayed put, he told MSNBC on Monday night. "I couldn't believe this was happening on my college campus," he said. Another student jumped out of a first-floor window at Berkey Hall, her parents said. Mike and Natalie Papoulias rushed to the campus on Monday night from Jackson, Michigan, after receiving a call from their daughter, they told local media. In a text message, the daughter said: "I heard somebody get shot, Mom. It's terrifying. I could smell the gunpowder." City officials said the shooting has rocked the small communities of MSU and East Lansing. "We went to school here, we got children here, we got family, this is us," said Marlon Lynch, chief of campus police at the university. All campus activities have been cancelled for at least 48 hours, said MSU president Teresa Woodruff, "to give ourselves time to think and to grieve and to be together". East Lansing lies about 70 miles (112km) north-west of Detroit. At Tuesday's news conference, Democrat House representative Elissa Slotkin of Michigan said she was "filled with rage" to be talking about yet another school shooting. "The most haunting picture of last night was watching the cameras pan through the crowd and seeing a young person wearing an 'Oxford Strong' sweatshirt," she said. The shirts were handed out to survivors of the Oxford High School shooting near Detroit, Michigan 15 months ago. "We have children in Michigan who are living their second school shooting in under a year and a half," she said. "If this is not a wake-up call to do something, I don't know what is." The shooting is the latest in a growing number of college campus and school shootings in the US. In November, three members of the University of Virginia football team were killed on campus, while 10 people were killed in a shooting at Umpqua Community College in Oregon in 2015. In 2007, 33 lives were lost in a shooting at Virginia Tech. Meanwhile, police in New Jersey said a town's public and private schools were closed on Tuesday due to a threat connected to the Michigan State suspect. A statement from the Ewing police department said its officers were informed the suspected gunman had ties to Ewing Township, and that a note containing a threat to two public schools there had been discovered. https://www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-64632879

  3. I figured out that the best plants to keep, are those that are actually weeds. I planted some lemon basil from seed and left them by the window. They REFUSED TO DIE. In the end, I think the left of nutrition in the tiny pot I grew them in killed them, but they really lasted inhumanly long. I'm now growing a new pot..

  6. Through a series of cruel experiments, British scientists say they've found psychological evidence linking flashy sports cars to small penis size in men. In a yet-to-be-peer-reviewed paper out of University College London, the researchers behind the study — evocatively titled "Small Penises and Fast Cars: Evidence for a Psychological Link" — detailed how they, in their own words, "manipulated what men believed about their own penis size" before asking them questions about luxury cars. The experiment was deceptively simple: the researchers gave participants "false information" (read: lied to) via an online surveying platform by telling them that the average erect penis size is roughly seven inches (when in reality, most research indicates that it's between five and six inches) and then, primed with that phony statistic, asked them a series of questions pertaining to consumer habits and desires. "We found that males, and males over 30 in particular, rated sports cars as more desirable when they were made to feel that they had a small penis," the Machiavellian researchers wrote in the study. According to the paper, there were other versions of this veritable mindfuck of an experiment in which the British researchers "manipulated [subjects'] self-esteem in different ways," but their professed link between the self-perception of having a smaller penis and desiring to own a fancy sports car didn't play out in those. In other words, it seems a lot as though in an attempt to show that the trope of buying expensive sports cars to overcompensate for having a small penis is "grounded in a psychological truth," these seemingly sadistic researchers ended up playing into the same kind of tired body-negative stereotypes that have for millennia made men act out over a phony sense of shame and inadequacy. It's no Stanford prison experiment, but perhaps next time psychological researchers will think twice before pandering to one of our culture's worst lies. https://futurism.com/neoscope/sports-cars-penis-size
  7. Reuters reported on Monday (13 Feb) that the rout in the share prices of India’s Adani Group continued despite the group trying to assure investors that its cashflows are strong and that it remains confident of “delivering attractive returns” to shareholders. On Monday, all the stocks of the Adani group were under pressure. Adani Enterprises fell 7 per cent, while Adani Total Gas, Adani Power and Adani Transmission continued to lose 5 per cent each. In total, the group has lost about US$120 billion in market value since the publication of a report by Hindenburg Research on 24 Jan last month, alleging security fraud by the group. Adani Total has lost 70 per cent since the Hindenburg report, while Adani Enterprises is down 50 per cent. Meanwhile, its group chairman Gautam Adani has denied the charges. In Mumbai, opposition political workers and activists marched shouting anti-Adani slogans and holding posters with cartoons of Adani and PM Narendra Modi. Opposition members accuse Modi’s government of giving undue favours to the Adani Group. “Brazen stock manipulation” After a two-year investigation, the Hindenburg report charged that Adani’s conglomerate was engaging in a “brazen stock manipulation and accounting fraud scheme over the course of decades.” According to Hindenburg’s report, it alleged that Gautam Adani’s elder brother, Vinod Adani, has been managing a network of offshore entities used to facilitate security fraud linked to the Adani Group. Some of the entities were said to have been set up by Vinod in Singapore with paid-up capitals of just S$1,000. Vinod is a PR in Singapore. This has been ascertained by TOC: “Many of the Vinod Adani-associated entities have no obvious signs of operations, including no reported employees, no independent addresses or phone numbers and no meaningful online presence. Despite this, they have collectively moved billions of dollars into Indian Adani publicly listed and private entities, often without required disclosure of the related party nature of the deals,” said Hindenburg. “Many of these entities later appear in suspect transactions, often funneling assets into or out of the Adani Group companies. We have also identified an instance where a private entity seems to have been used to help listed Adani Enterprises avoid reporting losses, bolstering the appearance of its reported earnings.” Concerns over banks’ exposure to Adani Group The swift share decline of Adani Group companies has sparked concerns over the broader systemic risk to Indian markets. India’s central bank has asked its local banks for the details of their exposure to the Adani conglomerate. Moody’s has downgraded the ratings outlook for some Adani companies, while index provider MSCI said it would cut the weightings of some in its stock indexes. Among the group of banks lending money to Adani Group is Singapore’s DBS. It acknowledged on Monday that it has a S$1.3 billion exposure to Adani group companies, but DBS CEO Piyush Gupta said it was not concerned about its exposure to the group. “They’re solid, cash-generating companies, so we’re not concerned about the exposure,” Gupta told the media. He said that Adani’s companies are “working well” and that their cash flows are “secure”. “We have no exposure to any of the shares of Adani or promoter financing of Adani, so we are not affected by all these changes in the share prices or promoter share prices. So right now, we have no concerns about exposure. We don’t expect to do anything (about it),” he added. However, foreign banks such as Citigroup, Credit Suisse and Standard Chartered Bank have reportedly stopped accepting bonds and other securities of the group as collateral for margin loans. Asked whether he expects financing costs for Indian companies to rise as a result of the Adani turmoil, Gupta said, “I don’t think so. If you look at India, pricing has always been exceptionally low. In fact, the Indian large corporates borrow at way below India country risk. So the general view that this is going to tarnish all of the industry, I don’t see that happening.” DBS has been the most aggressive among local banks in expanding in India. In November 2020, it completed its takeover of India’s Lakshmi Vilas Bank. It was the first time India turned to a foreign bank to rescue a struggling Indian bank. https://www.theonlinecitizen.com/2023/02/13/dbs-ceo-admits-bank-has-s1-3b-exposure-to-adani-group-but-says-he-isnt-concerned-and-dont-expect-to-do-anything/
