Video game giant Activision is investigating a hacking campaign that’s targeting players with the goal of stealing their credentials, TechCrunch has learned. At this point, the hackers’ specific goals — apart from stealing passwords for various types of accounts — are unclear. Somehow, the hackers are getting malware on the victim’s computers and then stealing passwords for their gaming accounts and crypto wallets, among others, according to sources. A person with knowledge of the incidents, who asked to remain anonymous because they weren’t authorized to speak to the press, said that people at Activision Blizzard are investigating, trying to “help remove the malware,” and “working on identifying and remediating player accounts for anyone affected.” “There is not enough data yet on how [the malware] is spreading,” the person said. “It could be only affecting folks who have third party tools installed.” Activision spokesperson Delaney Simmons told TechCrunch that the company is aware of “claims that some player credentials across the broader industry could be compromised from malware from downloading or using unauthorized software,” and that the company servers “remain secure and uncompromised.” The malware campaign appears to have been uncovered first by Zeebler, a person who develops and sells cheating software for the popular first-person shooter Call of Duty. On Wednesday, in the official channel for the PhantomOverlay cheat provider, Zeebler said that hackers were targeting gamers — some who use cheats — to steal their usernames and passwords. Zeebler described the effort as an “infostealer malware campaign,” where malware designed as legitimate-looking software unknowingly installed by the victim surreptitiously steals their usernames and passwords. Zeebler told TechCrunch that he found out about the hacking campaign when a PhantomOverlay customer had their account for the cheat software stolen. At that point, Zeebler added, he started investigating and was able to find the database of stolen credentials that the hackers were amassing. After that, Zeebler said he contacted Activision Blizzard as well as other cheat makers, whose users appear to be affected. TechCrunch obtained a sample of the allegedly stolen logins, and verified that a portion of the data are genuine credentials. It’s not clear how old or recent the data is. At this point, there are no reasons to believe regular players of Activision games are at risk, just those who use third-party apps such as cheats. Smyth, 54, is an American. She was born in Bangor, Maine. She stands accused of embezzling over $170,000 from at least five victims between 2008 and 2010 in Northern Ireland, where, as per legal documents, arrest warrants were issued for her in 2021, as per legal documents. Johnathan Walton was one of Smyth’s alleged victims, allegedly fleeced of US$100,000 and Smyth was convicted of stealing US$63,000 from him. Walton is a reality television producer whose credits include “Shark Tank: and American Ninja Warrior.” Walton started a podcast in 2021 called “Queen of the Con,” to warn others about Smyth. “She’s a master of disguise completely changing her appearance and her grift to suit each mark,” Walton said. He noted that Smyth always dressed in designer clothes, and she needed the money to post bail and for a frozen bank account. Walton also added that Smyth told him she was waiting for her inheritance from her wealthy family in Ireland whom she had been battling and was now awaiting a sum of about US$ 7 million (€ 5 million). In an interview with the Associated Press, Walton said that Smyth bought him expensive dinners and luxury vacations during the time they grew close to each other while living in Los Angeles. Python meat could be more sustainable meat alternative: Study It could be better for the planet to farm pythons than any other animal species, according to a new study. Said to taste like chicken meat, snake meat is high in protein and is eaten in parts of the world including Africa and Asia. Snake stew is a well-known specialty in Hong Kong, where it is a popular Cantonese delicacy and health supplement. Fast growers In a study published this month, researchers found that pythons are extremely efficient at converting their food into body mass. When compared to poultry, pork, beef, salmon, and even crickets, pythons grew the most for the same amount of food. The main reason they are able to gain up to 46g a day is because they are cold-blooded. Warm-blooded animals like mammals spend about 90 per cent of their energy maintaining a constant body temperature. This means that pythons, which rely on sunbathing to keep warm, can save a lot of energy and can more efficiently convert food into body mass. Less water needed, less waste produced The study looked at the length and weight of more than 4,600 reticulated pythons and Burmese pythons from two farms in Thailand and Vietnam and found that the two species were well suited for commercial production. They ate food that would have gone to waste, such as wild-caught rodents or rodent pests, and stillborn pigs, and required very little water. “A python can live off the dew that forms on its scales. In the morning, it just drinks off its scales and that’s enough,” co-author Daniel Natusch told The Washington Post. Natusch, a herpetologist, chairs a group of snake specialists for the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). In addition to their fast growth rate, both species are able to reproduce rapidly. They can grow to more than 100kg, and produce up to 100 eggs per year for 20 years or more. Due to their lack of limbs, very little is wasted in butchering, added Natusch. Pythons also produce smaller amounts of waste as compared to conventional livestock, and the type of waste also leads to fewer greenhouse gases. Possible solution to food insecurity The researchers proposed python farming as a "efficient, safe, and flexible" protein alternative to combat growing food insecurity in the world, especially in countries where there is a precedent for consuming snakes. Not only do they require less food, pythons are also able to fast for extended periods of time, without losing much weight or causing a decline in body condition. This tolerance for fasting is good news for python farms, as it would mean that they are more resilient to disruptions in supply chains, which are becoming more frequent due to climate change. Additionally, they are mostly sedentary when they are not hunting, they can tolerate small, confined spaces, and they do not fall sick often to viruses that affect livestock and poultry, reported the Smithsonian Magazine.
