    • 'Completely stunned': Eunos coffee shop closure leaves vendors scrambling, Singapore News - AsiaOne   https://www.asiaone.com/singapore/coffee-shop-eunos-closes-vendors-stalls-fnb   The sudden closure of **Thye Hwa Heng Canteen**, a coffee shop in Eunos that has operated for **40 years**, highlights the intense, real-world economic pressures facing local food and beverage (F&B) businesses. The closure has left nine food stalls scrambling to vacate the premises by the end of July 2026, with many vendors caught completely off guard.   ### The Vendors' Predicament Stallholders were only given notice on **Father's Day (June 21, 2026)**, giving them just over a month to find new locations, relocate heavy equipment, and salvage their livelihoods.    * **Dudu Cantonese Cuisine:** This stall is facing a massive financial blow. The owner, 30-year-old Tommy Pang, signed a lease agreement to operate three adjoining stalls **until 2028** at a monthly rent of about **$10,000**. He invested **over $100,000** into the space less than a year ago, including heavy infrastructure like an industrial kitchen fan. He is now completely stunned, facing the daunting task of relocating while safeguarding the livelihoods of more than 10 employees.    * **Mei Fa Ji Fish Soup:** Operated by 43-year-old Benedict Teo, this stall had only been open for **two months** before receiving the eviction notice. While he managed to secure a replacement stall in nearby Ubi, he noted that his neighboring stallholders are deeply struggling to find alternative spaces at such short notice.   ### Why the Coffee Shop is Closing   The 67-year-old operator of the coffee shop, Chen Qiwen, cited a brutal double-whammy of macro-economic factors:    1. **Surging Overhead Costs:** Escalating rental prices made it completely unsustainable for him to cover the rent for the entire coffee shop on his own.    2. **Evaporating Foot Traffic:** Over the last two years, many of the surrounding factories in the Eunos industrial estate gradually relocated away from the area. As a result, the coffee shop **lost more than half of its regular customer base**.   Chen shared that the decision was deeply emotional after running the place for four decades, but he was forced to shut it down to avoid losing his entire life savings trying to keep it afloat.   ### This is exactly what we were just talking about. This situation perfectly bridges the gap between high-level parliamentary talks and the brutal reality on the ground:    * **The Cost of Living & Doing Business:** While macro-policies focus on long-term tech hubs, a 40-year-old neighborhood staple closes down because immediate costs (rent) are going up while the immediate economy (local factories moving away) is shrinking.    * **The Fragility of Job Security:** For a young hawker who poured $100,000 of capital into a business, "job security" can disappear in a single afternoon through no fault of their own. It also directly impacts the 10+ everyday workers employed by that single stall.
