McDonald’s China didn’t just join a meme — it fully committed to it. 💁♀️
On April 18, a McDonald’s store in Guangzhou temporarily rebranded itself as “Mudan Lou” (Peony House), a long-running Cantonese joke where “McDonald’s” in Cantonese sounds like the name of a traditional restaurant. But here’s the twist: the store only kept the name for half a day.
The Yuexiu District location went all in. The iconic golden arches were covered, replaced by a red-and-gold signboard. Outside? Red plastic stools and giant palm fans. Inside? Slippers, bamboo baskets, and full 90s Cantonese teahouse vibes 🪭
This meme actually runs deep. Locals have been joking for years — even taxi drivers — that “Mudan Lou” is a legit Cantonese restaurant. Other chains got their own versions too: KFC became “Heng De Ji,” Pizza Hut turned into “Bi Sheng Ge,” and Wallace into “Hua Lai Shu.”
The pop-up launched at 9am… and by the afternoon, the sign was gone. Not because it got shut down, but because it was designed that way — a blink-and-you-miss-it moment that drove serious FOMO.
Behind the scenes, there’s also a very real reason it couldn’t stay. “Mudan Lou” is already trademarked, and a full rebrand would clash with licensing and regulations. So instead, McDonald’s kept it as a short-term stunt — later adding smaller “Mudan Lou” signs to other Guangdong stores while keeping the original branding.
Half a day of chaos, years of cultural payoff. 🍔
