An 82-year-old man was sentenced to two weeks' jail after crashing his 57-year-old girlfriend's car in Bishan in 2023.
He had taken the car without her knowledge, driven with a licence that expired in 1995, and had no active car insurance at the time.
Took the keys when girlfriend was asleep
On Oct. 30, 2023, Loh Chun Meng stayed over at his girlfriend's home in Ang Mo Kio, CNA reported.
The next morning, he woke up with pain in his knees.
He then decided to drive to Towner Road to get an injection to treat the pain.
His girlfriend was asleep when he took the car keys from her kitchen and set off in the car for the clinic.
After getting the injection, Loh drove to Block 151 Bishan Street 11 to get breakfast.
According to charge sheets seen by Mothership, it was there that Loh lost control of the car at about 9:41am.
He stepped on the accelerator instead of the brake, causing the car to move forward.
It mounted a kerb and collided with a metal cabinet containing gas cylinders.
Afterward, he reversed the car, causing it to mount another kerb and striking a lamp post.
The car's rear windshield was left crumpled and cracked, CNA reported.
The rest of the car sustained dents, cracks and scratches.
A lonely widower
The court heard that the 82-year-old's licence expired in 1995, and became invalid after he failed to renew it.
For the accident, the prosecutor sought two to four weeks' jail, a fine of S$2,000 and 24 months' disqualification from driving.
They argued that Loh could have woken up his girlfriend and asked her to drive, so there was no reasonable explanation as to why he was behind the wheel.
Loh's defence lawyer asked for not more than 15 days' jail, a fine of not more than S$2,000, and a disqualification period of not more than 24 months.
He said that Loh had been remorseful and was a Singapore Armed Forces officer holding the rank of lieutenant who had served the nation with dedication.
The elderly man had spent the majority of his life in the armed forces.
The lawyer further argued that Loh was a widower, who lives with the support of his daughter and experienced hardships and isolation after his wife died due to a Covid-19 related illness, CNA wrote.
He also suffered from multiple chronic conditions like asthma, hypertension, high cholesterol and osteoarthritis in both knees, according to his lawyer.
Loh turned up at court using a walking frame.
The 82-year-old could have been jailed for up to three years, fined up to S$10,000, or both for driving without a license.
Driving without an insurance policy in force carries a jail term of up to three months, fine of up to S$1,000, or both.
Driving without due care and attention could have landed him in jail for up to six months, fined up to S$1,000, or both.
Loh was convicted and sentenced on Oct. 22.
