    • OK let me try to be @socrates469bc for a change.   Looking at the announcement, we see SG imposes a 10% tax on all US imports. I think this is attributed to the GST of 9% and Trump rounded that up for ease of implementation.   What this means is that we have already been paying for this extra amount when we buy US made.    For example,   Airpod is say, 10 dollars, we would have paid 11 (cost with the rounding). After whatever markup, the price we pay includes this tax (from SG Gov).   When we export, say panties (for illustration purposes), at 10 dollars. The importer in the US will take that in as cost. There is no added tax to increase the cost to them.   With this change,   When we import Airpod it will still be 11 dollars after GST. No change unless LW decide to increase GST again when he gets elected to spike sinkies. So what we pay for American goods see no change!   However, our Terex bros or whoever (probably the semicon biz) exports to the US (including our panties exporter) will now need to be taxed 10%. However, this might not be paid by our exporters. It could be paid by the US importers. So, our businesses see no change unless of course now the Americans forced them to sell at lower price or the Americans go and source from a cheaper source or ask SG business to manufacture in US.   Conclusion,   For you and me, there should be no change but according to our overlord armchair economists, they will say price increase is not related to tariffs since they can say that of many other things and get away with it.   Therefore, it is not inconceivable to see a further rise in costs for the poor peasants. So, no more Jack's Place but eat at cheaper hawker western stalls.
