📌 Basic Facts
- Location: Blocks 7 and 8, Kim Tian Place, Tiong Bahru
- Date: July 21, 2026
- Duration: ~3.5 hours, from about 10:30pm to 2am
- Building height: Up to 25 storeys; all lifts stopped working during the outage
🕰️ Timeline of Events
1. Start (~10:30pm): Resident "GC" was showering when lights flickered and his unit went dark. Neighbours reported the same issue; checks confirmed the outage affected the whole block, then spread across Block 8 to upper floors and the void deck.
2. Response: Residents contacted SP Group, who said technicians were en route. By ~11:30pm, staff estimated repairs could take ~3 hours.
3. Impact: Without lifts or emergency lighting, many residents had to climb dark stairs. GC’s father climbed up with help from younger neighbours; some elderly residents waited at the void deck as they could not manage the stairs.
4. Restoration: Block 8 void deck regained power ~1:30am; GC’s unit and most homes were back online by ~2am.
💬 Resident Concerns
- Surprised that backup power systems also failed
- Questioned whether rooftop solar panels could be configured to provide emergency power
- Noted particular hardship for elderly residents and those returning from late work shifts
📢 Official Explanation (Tanjong Pagar Town Council, Jul 24)
- Cause: Fault in the incoming main power supply (not internal building systems)
- Actions: SP PowerGrid carried out repairs and installed temporary supply cables, which needed safe connection before full restoration
- On-site support: Town Council staff and Resident Network volunteers assisted residents, checked on vulnerable groups, and monitored the situation until power was fully restored
