  1. The Ministry of Health (MOH) confirmed an imported case of monkeypox infection in Singapore on Jun. 21. The patient is a 42-year-old British national who works as a flight attendant. He was in Singapore from Jun. 15 to 17 and entered the country again on Jun. 19. He tested positive for monkeypox on Jun. 20 and is currently warded at the National Centre for Infectious Diseases (NCID). Developed skin rashes a day before he was diagnosed The man suffered from a headache on Jun. 14 and a fever two days later. These symptoms resolved. However, he developed skin rashes on Jun. 19 and sought medical attention through a tele-consultation on the same night. He was conveyed to NCID on Jun. 20 for further assessment. Contact tracing ongoing, 13 close contacts identified so far MOH shared that contact tracing is ongoing and that 13 close contacts have been identified as of Jun. 21. All close contacts will be placed on quarantine for 21 days since their last contact with the case. Two low-risk contacts have been identified. They have been placed on phone surveillance for 21 days since their last contact with the case, and will receive daily phone calls to monitor any onset of symptoms. If they are suspected to have been infected, they will be conveyed to the NCID for further evaluation and isolation to prevent further transmission. Largely remained in hotel room while in Singapore MOH revealed that the flight attendant spent most of his time in his hotel room while in Singapore. On Jun. 16, he visited a massage establishment and ate at three food establishments. The ministry has advised that the risk of transmission to visitors at the locations that the case has visited is generally low, as data has shown that monkeypox transmits through close physical or prolonged contact. All four locations are undergoing cleaning and disinfection. https://mothership.sg/2022/06/monkeypox-case-singapore/
  2. The Parkroyal Collection Pickering hotel has issued an apology for rejecting a same-sex couple's booking to use the hotel as a venue for their wedding. "We are an inclusive hotel, and we are truly sorry for the disappointment and inconvenience this may have caused," the hotel wrote in a post on Instagram on Jun. 21. "Particularly disappointing" The hotel's refusal to host the ceremony was brought to light by Prout, a platform that facilitates meet-ups and distributes resources for members of the LGBTQ+ community. In a Jun. 20 Instagram post, Prout shared a screenshot of an email from an unnamed "five star hotel that neighbours Hong Lim Park". Writing in response to a lesbian couple, a representative from the hotel said: "I am sorry to inform you that the hotel does not allow same-sex couples to have wedding ceremony and celebration due to the regulation." Prout described the incident as "particularly disappointing" as members of the LGBTQ+ community often frequented the hotel. "The hotel clearly has no issue capitalising on the annual pride event held at Hong Lim Park," wrote the platform. "This serves as a painful reminder that there are many businesses that may claim to be inclusive to the LGBTQ+ community but may not actually do so in their everyday practice." The platform noted that while same-sex marriage was not recognised in Singapore, it was not illegal to hold a same-sex wedding ceremony in the country. Parkroyal Collection Pickering has previously been a sponsor of Pink Dot, though they were not a sponsor at the event's latest edition. Couple accepts the hotel's apology In their own post, the hotel wrote that the incident had been the result of an "unfortunate mistake and misinformation". "We have since reached out to the couple and will do our best to assist them with their special occasion at our hotel." Through Prout, the lesbian couple said that they'd accepted the apology and appreciated the hotel's move to allow such ceremonies in the future. However, the couple shared that they no longer wished to hold their wedding at the hotel. "We hope that other hotels will be inspired by the Parkroyal Pickering and reconsider their own policies and communications towards allowing same-sex couples to hold their celebrations there," they wrote. https://mothership.sg/2022/06/parkroyal-same-sex-wedding/

  7. In a rather heartbreaking story, a netizen alleged that his friend’s wife got married to him just to become a Permanent Resident (PR) in Singapore. In an anonymous post to popular Facebook page SGWhispers, the netizen wrote that his friend got married to a foreigner the year before, and added that to date, they have been married for 9 months. In a post on Monday (Jun 20), the netizen added: “Throughout the marriage, the wife does not attend any family’s (sic) gatherings on the husband[‘s] side. And she did not move to her husband’s place after ROM. After marriage, the wife’s true colours started to show. She will get angry at the slightest thing and will start cursing him and his family to death”. The netizen also added that after getting married, the wife then blocked her husband on all forms of social media. And after being seen with another guy, her husband found out that she had been staying with her older sister, a PR as well. When the husband asked the woman’s sister where his wife was, she retorted: “why can’t she go out with friend? She cannot have guy friend?” “So the intention and scheme of this woman is clear now, ever since she came to SG in 2017, she has been sleeping around with SG men with the hopes of attaining PR status”, the netizen wrote. He explained that she had been in relationships with about five men over the years. While his friend wanted to divorce his wife, because they were married for less than three years, he was unable to do so. Asking others for advice on his friend’s married life, he wrote: “Dear all, please advise what can my friend do now to stop this woman from breaking up families and relationships in SG. She is still enjoying her life here. Looking for guys with money and car. Looking to switch career with her newly given PR status for higher pay”. 8. An 82-year-old man has been found living at the Purvis Street back alley behind Chin Chin Eating House for more than 10 years. Shin Min Daily News reported that the man is a Malaysian who goes by the name Pang Jee Ting. He apparently came to Singapore at a young age and became a Singapore permanent resident. A security guard told the Chinese paper that he often saw Pang loitering in the vicinity and suspected that he had been sleeping rough on the street. The guard also remarked that Pang would cycle around and pick up cigarette butts from the street to smoke. Lived in DIY tent made of canvas, planks, and cardboard The boss of Chin Chin Eating House told the Chinese press that rain or shine, he would always spot Pang at the back alley in his makeshift tent made out of wooden planks and canvas. The ground of the "tent" was lined with cardboard, which the Chinese paper deduced was Pang's mattress. The reporter noted that the tent was large enough for only one person. It was reported that Pang only had one or two sets of clothing. He often showered in his clothes and let them dry naturally while wearing them. The boss of Chin Chin Eating House said Pang had a temper, adding that he has a lot of pride and refuses to accept help easily. The Chinese newspaper added that Pang used to live at Toa Payoh with a room mate. However he left after the two had disagreements. While Pang gets by on his own, he has a black cat which sticks by him. A photo of the black cat appeared in the papers, and it was reportedly in the tent when the Chinese media headed down to the alley. The boss of Chin Chin Eating House said, "It doesn't know what happened to him. It's still waiting for him to return." Pang met with accident, in critical condition Pang's living condition was uncovered when he got into an accident at Victoria Street. The Singapore Police Force (SPF) issued an appeal on June 18, looking for Pang's next-of-kin: "The police are appealing for the next-of-kin of 82-year-old Mr Pang Jee Ting to come forward. Mr Pang was involved in an accident along Victoria Street towards Kallang Road after Middle Road on June 17, 2022, and is in critical condition. Anyone with information is requested to call the Police Hotline at 1800-255-0000 or submit information online at www.police.gov.sg/witness. All information will be kept strictly confidential." https://mothership.sg/2022/06/old-man-homeless-purvis-street/

  12. A Singaporean woman living in Melbourne, Australia has ended up with first and second-degree burns on her hand after a phone charger caught fire while she was using it. What happened Shin Min Daily News (SMDN) reported that the 51-year-old, identified only by her surname Liang (surname in hanyu pinyin), was on a video call with a friend when she realised that her phone battery was running low. She plugged her phone into the charger and left it on the sofa. The charger suddenly "exploded and caught fire". Liang recounted instinctively using her right hand to try to put out the fire on her long-sleeved top and sweater. Panicked, she first used a bedsheet to wrap the phone and charger up. Liang then grabbed her daughter's water bottle from the table and using the water inside to try to put the fire out. As the bundled up electronics were still on fire, she threw the entire package into the bathroom before turning on the shower and aiming the shower head at it to extinguish the flames completely. The aftermath It was only when the crisis was averted that Liang noticed the huge blisters filled with liquid on her left hand. Her daughter applied ointment on her hand and wrapped it up as Liang only sought medical attention the morning after. She said: "The doctor told me that I suffered first and second-degree burns. My hand is still bandaged and I have to wait for the injuries to heal gradually. I'll have to continue observing it to see if there's any infection for now, and I'll just have to wait for the blisters to subside if there isn't an infection. (...) My hand has been burned but thankfully, my face and hair have remained unscathed. Otherwise, my injuries would have been more severe." Liang also admitted that she was worried about the sofa -- or worse, her entire apartment -- catching fire when the incident happened. Charger purchased on Shopee SMDN reported that Liang's charger was gifted by a friend. The said friend purchased it from iWALK's official store on Shopee. According to iWALK's website, they are headquartered in China and supply a "comprehensive range of advanced Smart device accessories". https://mothership.sg/2022/06/phone-charger-explode-fire-burn/
