  3. SINGAPORE - Eight bus drivers have tested positive for Covid-19 as at July 30, said the Land Transport Authority (LTA). The Straits Times learnt that some drivers who had been in contact with confirmed cases were placed on quarantine or stay-home notices in recent weeks. Responding to queries, the LTA told ST these measures affected less than 1 per cent of the 9,500 bus drivers. There has been no impact on bus operations, it added. The LTA did not give details on how many drivers had been quarantined or if the confirmed cases were linked to one another. It also said more than 99 per cent of bus drivers have completed their first dose of the Covid-19 vaccination. Public transport operators have also been proactively administering antigen rapid tests on workers based near locations of active coronavirus clusters, it said. This is to pick up potential infections early. "We will continue to work closely with public transport operators to ensure safe management measures for both workers and commuters are strictly adhered to," LTA added. "In addition, the operators will continue with their stepped-up daily cleaning and disinfection regime for public transport nodes and vehicles." Last year, several SMRT bus drivers were linked to a Covid-19 cluster at Bukit Panjang Integrated Transport Hub. Around 11,000 people were subsequently screened for the virus as a precautionary measure. In May this year, the authorities said that public transport, such as trains and buses, is “well-ventilated through mechanical and/or natural fresh air intake”. Combined with stepped-up cleaning regimes and mask-wearing, this will minimise commuters’ exposure to the virus, they added. Infectious disease experts concurred, saying that the risk to passengers is likely to be low, given that interactions with bus drivers are transient and mask-wearing is compulsory. "All these will reduce the risk of transmission, as will the air flow exchange that happens when the air-conditioning systems in the buses are operating," said Professor Teo Yik Ying, dean of the National University of Singapore's Saw Swee Hock School of Public Health. Those who are still concerned can ensure they are wearing quality masks and take buses at less busy times, suggested infectious diseases specialist Leong Hoe Nam. "Try to do social distancing within the bus. This is frequently not possible, but every little bit helps," he said. "The option to wear a good mask is in your hands. Remember that healthcare workers have protected themselves consistently with good quality masks." https://www.straitstimes.com/singapore/transport/8-bus-drivers-positive-for-covid-19-as-at-july-30-lta-says-no-impact-on-bus
  4. On Wednesday, MOH said that new measures will be put in place following a detection of cases. "Any detection of cases within a hospital will invariably lead to a ward closure, limiting movements of patients and staff in and out of the affected ward," said the ministry. Affected patients and staff will also be placed on quarantine. Such measures while necessary to control further transmission of the virus, will have an adverse impact on hospitals’ capacity in caring for patients by reducing the availability of hospital staff and bed capacities, said MOH. As an interim measure to reduce potential transmission in hospitals, visits will stop from Aug 5 to 18. This is except for the patient groups below, who will be allowed visitation on a conditional and case-by-case basis, as assessed by the hospital: a. Patients whose conditions have turned very ill; b. Paediatric patients; c. Birthing/post-partum mothers; and d. Patients requiring additional care support from caregivers. For example, assistance of inpatients who have mental incapacities and family members who are undergoing caregiver training to better care for their loved ones after hospital discharge. For such patients, only one visitor is allowed per day with visit duration of no more than 30 minutes at the bedside, said MOH. For patients who are very ill, up to five pre-designated visitors may be registered, with a maximum of two visitors at the patient’s bedside at any one time of no more than 30 minutes visit duration. Any visitor who requires to stay beyond 30 minutes visit duration such as caregiver training, will only be allowed after the visitor test negative on a supervised antigen rapid test, where the validity of the result of this test is 24 hours. MOH added that all visitors to the hospitals must don face masks with good filtration capability at all times. "These include reusable masks that are made of two layers of fabrics, and surgical masks." The ministry reminded that there must be no eating or drinking in the inpatient wards, and visitors must not use the patients’ toilets in the wards and must avoid sitting on patients’ beds. The ministry said that all patients - inpatient and outpatient - who are unvaccinated will be approached by the hospital healthcare team on COVID-19 vaccination if clinically appropriate. Patients who receive their first dose of COVID-19 vaccination at the hospital should return to the same hospital for their second dose, said MOH. "Vaccinated patients will protect other patients in the hospital and reduce the risk of COVID-19 clusters in the hospitals," it added. MOH said it will review the above measures regularly. "We seek the understanding and cooperation of all Singaporeans as we make adjustments to protect our patients and hospitals during this transition period towards a COVID-resilient society." https://www.channelnewsasia.com/news/singapore/hospital-no-visitors-patients-covid-19-cease-changi-moh-15378914
  5. PETALING JAYA: Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin is not quitting despite the pressure by Umno and other opposition parties for him to do so. He said today that the issue of him resigning does not arise as he still enjoys sufficient support in the Dewan Rakyat. Surrounded by a phalanx of ministers including Umno’s deputy prime minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob, Muhyiddin said in a televised address that his government will table a motion of confidence in the Dewan Rakyat in September to test his majority. Muhyiddin said yesterday that he received a letter from the Yang di-Pertuan Agong notifying him that eight Umno MPs had written to the Dewan Rakyat speaker notifying him that they have withdrawn support for him as prime minister. The King, Muhyiddin said, cited two provisions in the Federal Constitution, requiring the PM to resign if he no longer enjoyed majority support and for His Majesty to appoint an MP as prime minister who he believes enjoys majority support. “With that, I was summoned for an audience with the King at 11am today. “In the audience, I have informed the King that I have received statutory declarations from MPs that convinced me I still enjoy majority support at this time. “With that, my resignation under Article 43(4) does not arise.” Muhyiddin said he was aware that his position as prime minister has always been questioned so he informed the King that he will determine the legitimacy of his position in Parliament. As such, he said, a motion of confidence would be tabled when the Dewan Rakyat reconvenes in September. “With this, my position as PM and the status of the Perikatan Nasional administration as the government of the day will be determined in line with the law and the Federal Constitution. “Thank God, the King has consented to my proposal,” said Muhyiddin, adding the government and its machinery would continue functioning and remained focused on managing the Covid-19 pandemic. https://www.freemalaysiatoday.com/category/nation/2021/08/04/no-question-of-quitting-i-still-have-majority-support-says-pm/

  7. Everyone knows the value of vitamins C and E to help boost the body’s immunity and speed up healing, but many are not aware of the importance of vitamin D. Also known as the “sunshine vitamin” — because you get it from being exposed to the sun — vitamin D is an essential ingredient in the fight against brittle teeth and bones, muscle degradation and hair loss, says Leonica Kei, trichologist and founder of Leonica K Trichology. “Vitamin D is important to keep bones healthy by increasing the intestinal absorption of dietary calcium, which is one of the main building blocks of bone. Hence, it helps regulate the amount of calcium and phosphate in the body. Together, these nutrients are needed to keep bones, teeth, nerves and muscles healthy. Emerging evidence also shows that vitamin D is critical for one’s immune function,” says Dr Ian Tan, a medical doctor at IDS Clinic. Surprisingly, there is an alarmingly high level of vitamin D deficiency among the residents of sunny Singapore, especially the elderly and people working the night shift, due to the fact that most of them stay indoors or walk outside shielded by umbrellas and sunscreen. Unfortunately, vitamin D is not something you can find in beauty products, which you slather on your skin or massage into your scalp. It is mainly produced in the skin when exposed to the UVB rays of the sun. The general recommendation is to get between five and 30 minutes of full body sun exposure at least twice a week (that means being completely naked with zero coverage). “With the modern lifestyle that we live in, plus Covid-19 thrown into the ring, most of us tend to stay indoors now. And even when heading out, we would be fully clothed and have a layer of sunscreen applied. That makes it difficult to get sufficient sun exposure needed to make enough vitamin D to meet the body’s requirements,” says TH Wong, resident pharmacist at health and beauty online retailer Glovida. Rather than let the hundreds of dollars spent on whitening and anti-ageing skincare, sunscreens and protective make up go down the drain, experts suggest eating your vitamin D instead. Melanie Anthonysamy, nutrition team lead at HealthifyMe, lists vitamin D-rich foods: Fatty fish like mackerel, salmon, tuna and sardines, beef liver, egg yolk, cereals or dairy products fortified with Vitamin D, or mushroom and soy products for vegetarians. But not many people eat healthy, balanced diets resulting in inadequate amounts of vitamin D-fortified foods in their daily diets. “To give you an idea of how much you need to eat to get sufficient vitamin D in your diet, you would require at least 170g salmon, or 25 egg yolks, or two litres of milk every day,” says Wong. The best and most efficient way of getting vitamin D into your body is simply popping a daily supplement. The recommended dietary allowance of vitamin D for adults up to 69 years old is 600/IU a day, and for those above 70 years old, 800/IU a day is required, advises Anthonysamy. She suggests when shopping for supplements, do look for ones that offer the daily recommended allowance you need for your age bracket. “Too much vitamin D consumption can be fatal as it can cause toxicity which could lead to renal failure, cardiac arrhythmias, and even death. It is not recommended to take above 4000IU of vitamin D a day unless monitored by your physician,” she says. To know if you are taking the right amount of daily supplements, Kei suggests taking a simple blood test to determine deficiencies in your body. This is helpful in determining why you are experiencing bodily imbalances like unusual breakouts, fatigue or hair loss. If thinning tresses or hair fall is your concern, Kei recommends this vitamin cocktail to improve the quality of your locks: Iron, vitamin B12, vitamin D and zinc. “Besides vitamins, proteins are also very important because hair is made up of proteins. A well-balanced diet that consists of meat, carbohydrates and vegetables is a good start to having healthy hair,” she says.
  8. The police are investigating 84 people following raids on 76 massage establishments and 78 public entertainment outlets between last Monday (July 26) and Sunday (Aug 1). In a statement on Tuesday night, the police said they raided unlicensed KTV-like outlets at North Bridge Road, Outram Road, Kallang Avenue, Ubi Road 1 and Geylang Lorong 13. They found 50 people in the premises who are now being investigated for alleged breaches of the Covid-19 (Temporary Measures) (Control Order) Regulations 2020. Of these, four men aged between 24 and 46 are also being investigated for allegedly managing the unlicensed public entertainment outlets. The police added 15 massage establishments were believed to have committed various breaches under the Massage Establishments Act and the Covid-19 (Temporary Measures) (Control Order) Regulations 2020. Police officers had found masseuses and customers not wearing masks at two premises. These two places were ordered shut for 10 days and fined $1,000 each while the customers will be fined $300 for breaching safe management measures. Investigations against 34 people, including operators, masseuses and customers are ongoing. Under the Massage Establishments Act, those found providing massage services in a massage establishment without a valid licence face a fine of $10,000, jail of up to two years, or both. For non-compliance with safe distancing measures under the Covid-19 (Temporary Measures) (Control Order) Regulations 2020, offenders can be jailed for up to six months, fined up to $10,000, or both. If convicted of supplying liquor without a valid licence and providing public entertainment without a valid licence, offenders can be fined up to $20,000 for each offence. https://www.straitstimes.com/singapore/courts-crime/police-raid-154-establishments-including-unlicensed-ktv-style-outlets-in-a
  9. BERLIN (Reuters) - Germany on Monday sent a warship to the South China Sea for the first time in almost two decades, joining other Western nations in expanding its military presence in the region amid growing alarm over China's territorial ambitions. China claims swathes of the South China Sea and has established military outposts on artificial islands in the waters that contain gas fields and rich fishing. The U.S. Navy, in a show of force against the Chinese territorial claims, regularly conducts so-called "freedom of navigation" operations in which their vessels pass close by some of the contested islands. China in turn objects to the U.S. missions, saying they do not help promote peace or stability. Washington has put countering China at the heart of its national security policy and seeks to rally partners against what it says are Beijing's increasingly coercive economic and foreign policies. Officials in Berlin have said the German navy will stick to common trade routes. The frigate is not expected to sail through the Taiwan Strait either, another regular U.S. activity condemned by Beijing. Nevertheless, Berlin has made it clear the mission serves to stress the fact Germany does not accept China's territorial claims. Germany is walking a tightrope between its security and economic interests as China has become Berlin's most important trading partner. German exports there have helped mitigate the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on Europe’s biggest economy. German Defence Minister Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer travelled to the port of Wilhelmshaven to see the frigate Bayern off on its seven-month voyage that will take it to Australia, Japan, South Korea and Vietnam. The vessel is expected to cross the South China Sea in mid-December, making it the first German warship to pass through the region since 2002. "We want existing law to be respected, sea routes to be freely navigable, open societies to be protected and trade to follow fair rules," Kramp-Karrenbauer said. Countries including Britain, France, Japan, Australia and New Zealand, have also been expanding their activity in the Pacific to counter China's influence.

  13. PETALING JAYA: The government has appeared to back down in its standoff with the Palace over the revocation of the emergency ordinances (EOs), conceding that the process has not been finalised. In a statement, Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin said that with the emergency ending on Aug 1, the cancellation of the EOs by the Yang di-Pertuan Agong no longer arises. Still, he said, the EOs will be brought to Parliament in September to be debated, in line with the King’s decree on the matter. “This motion will be discussed in the Cabinet meeting tomorrow and it is hoped it will resolve the polemic surrounding the revocation of the EOs harmoniously and constitutionally.” Ties between the Muhyiddin administration and the Palace have been strained since it was revealed that the King did not consent to the revocation of the EOs despite law minister Takiyuddin Hassan announcing in Parliament that emergency laws were revoked on July 21. This led to questions from MPs on whether the King had given his consent, a query which Takiyuddin refused to answer citing the Dewan Rakyat speaker’s ruling for him to explain the matter on Aug 2. However, following a revelation that the matter had not received consent, the Dewan Rakyat erupted in chaos, with calls for Muhyiddin, Takiyuddin and speaker Azhar Harun to resign. Dewan Rakyat sittings were subsequently suspended, and while the Prime Minister’s Office initially defended its conduct, it now appears to have given into calls for the revocation of the EOs to be debated. Meanwhile, Muhyiddin’s position appears to be safe, at least until the Parliament sitting in September.

  16. Garrick Landon Bloom, 48, rocked Florida when he was charged with 865 counts of child rape after being taken into custody in Tallahassee. The child predator was arrested for grooming a 5-year-old boy and subjecting him to repeated sexual abuse for years. He faced 216 counts of rape of a child, 216 counts of involuntary deviate sexual intercourse with a child, 216 counts of aggravated indecent assault of a child, 120 counts of statutory sexual assault of a child 11 years or older, 96 counts of statutory sexual assault, and a single count of endangering the welfare of a child, Newsweek reports. When he realized that he was facing over 15,000 years in prison, he agreed to the deal of the century. For entering a guilty plea, the prosecution dismissed all but 5 counts of first-degree felony child rape, which resulted in Bloom being sentenced to no less than 40 years but not more than 80 years in prison. Disturbingly, Bloom could have been released in his lifetime, leaving countless children in danger. After more than a month on the run from the police, authorities located Bloom at an emergency homeless shelter, where he had been staying for two days. The Tallahassee Democrat reports that he was arrested outside of the Kearney Center and taken into custody by U.S. Marshals Fugitive Task Force, according to Deputy Commander Marty West. Bloom had fled to Tampa and then Tallahassee after leaving his home in Clarion, Pennsylvania. He evaded authorities for a month after a warrant was issued for his arrest. It was then that U.S. Marshals took over the case, finally tracking him down and putting him behind bars. Garrick Bloom’s death was ruled a homicide by ligature strangulation, according to the medical examiner. (Photo Credit: Leon County Sheriff’s Office) Unsurprisingly, even the worst criminals view child abusers and rapists as being at the bottom of the prison hierarchy. As such, it didn’t take long for Bloom to have a run-in with one of his fellow inmates. Just months into his prison sentence, the Pennsylvania Department of Corrections confirmed that Bloom was found unresponsive in his cell just after 11 p.m. Although officers and medical staff immediately attempted to perform life-saving measures, their efforts were in vain. The emergency medical staff then responded to the facility and subsequently declared Bloom dead. Despite facing over 15,000 years behind bars, Garrick Bloom had received a minimum of 40 years in prison, meaning that he could have been released in his lifetime. (Photo Credit: Pixabay) Following an investigation, Pennsylvania’s State Police Barracks at Clearfield confirmed that Bloom’s death was a homicide, according to Explore Clarion. The Clearfield County Coroner’s Office has since ruled the cause to be ligature strangulation, which is characterized by strangulation from a constricting band tightened by an external force. Police are hoping to identify and bring charges against his killer. As of now, no further details have been released concerning Bloom’s bizarre and mysterious murder. Garrick Bloom will never again be able to harm another child, and his child victim can now begin to heal. (Photo Credit: Leon County Sheriff’s Office) Had Bloom survived his prison stint long enough to see his freedom, he would have been required to register as a Tier 3 sex offender for life. However, this wouldn’t protect the children he could very easily come into contact with, leaving many vulnerable to abuse.
