Despite Singapore govt’s condemnation of Israel embassy’s insensitive post, many netizens question why no POFMA order was issued, as the post spread misinformation posing risks to social harmony in the country.

    Israel-Shan.png

On Monday (25 March), the Singapore government strongly condemned a Facebook post by the Israeli embassy, deeming it “completely unacceptable,” according to Law and Home Affairs Minister K Shanmugam.

However, many netizens have raised questions regarding whether the government will pursue further action against the embassy.

They wonder why no correction direction under the Protection from Online Falsehoods and Manipulation Act (POFMA) was issued to the embassy, considering the post disseminated misinformation potentially harmful to Singapore’s social harmony.

The controversial post, published on Sunday, drew comparisons between mentions of Israel and Palestine in the Quran. It stated, “Israel is mentioned 43 times in the Quran.”

“On the other hand, Palestine is not mentioned even once. Each and every archeological evidence – maps, documents, coins, link the land of Israel to the Jewish people as the indigenous people of the land.”

The post was deleted later that day.

Addressing the media on Monday, Minister Shanmugam revealed his immediate reaction upon discovering the post. “I was very upset,” he confessed, outlining the steps taken by the Home Affairs Ministry to communicate their concerns to the Foreign Affairs Ministry, which in turn demanded the immediate removal of the post by the Israeli embassy.

Mr Shanmugam criticized the post for being “insensitive and inappropriate,” highlighting the potential risks it posed to Singapore’s safety, security, and harmony.

He emphasized Singapore’s commitment to protecting all its residents, including Jewish and Muslim communities, and cautioned against actions that could “inflame tensions” and jeopardize the safety of the Jewish community in Singapore.

Netizens question lack of further action against the Israel embassy

However, after observing the reactions of netizens on Singaporean social media platforms such as ‘Wake Up, Singapore,’ state media outlets like CNA and The Straits Times Facebook page, it is evident that many are questioning why no further action has been taken against the Israeli Embassy regarding the insensitive post.

Some are calling for an official apology, citing concerns about its potential harm to social harmony in Singapore.

Others are even suggesting issuing a POFMA correction direction to address the misinformation and its undermining effect on local harmony.

POFMA aims to protect the Singapore public from online harm by addressing the spread of falsehoods.

Some perceive the controversial post as indicative of a lack of respect or understanding of religious and racial harmony in Singapore, urging for accountability and transparency in addressing such issues.

One netizen expressed shock at the Israeli Embassy’s decision to make such a post, particularly considering the presence of Muslims within the Singaporean community.

    arrogance.jpg

Some Muslim brothers also pointed out the misleading interpretation in the embassy’s original post. They clarified that in the Quran, the term “Israel” refers to the people of Prophet Yakub, also known as “Jacob,” and not the modern-day country as implied.

    quran2.jpg

    quran2-1.jpg

Another netizen speculated that the recent development could be a desperate attempt by the Israeli embassy to shift the narrative, as they are starting to perceive that Singaporeans and our government are not aligning with their interests despite maintaining diplomatic relations with them.

    take-side.jpg

Netizen highlights offence under the Maintenance of Religious Harmony Act

One comment even emphasized that under Section 17F of the Maintenance of Religious Harmony Act (MRHA), it constitutes an offence to incite hostility, ill-will, or hatred between local religious groups, as well as to insult or wound the religious feelings of others, if it poses a threat to public peace or order in Singapore.

The punishment for such offences can include a fine, imprisonment for up to 5 years, or both.

    MRHA.jpg

A netizen raised the question of what would happen if an individual, rather than the Israeli embassy, were to make such a post, “would it also be as simple as requesting the person to take the post down, or would it result in an arrest and charge?”

    POST.jpg

Meanwhile, some question why no POFMA was issued to the Israel Embassy, as some believed that the controversial post could undermine Singapore’s multiracial policies

There's no denying that Singapore is an expensive place to live in.

Last November, the Economist Intelligence Unit ranked Singapore joint-top, alongside Zurich, as the world's most expensive city.

For a foreign family looking to settle down and live here—whether it be for work, studies or simply to start a new life—this can seem rather daunting.

Australian expat Jarrad Brown crunched the numbers, posting a TikTok video on March 13 to break down how much an expat household of four has to earn to live in Singapore.

The financial planner, who moved from Perth to Singapore in 2013, said: "We can work out that we need to earn between $320,000 and $335,000 per household per year."

Jarrad provided a caveat that this projected amount is for the "average family" and does not take into account "all the lavish things" that Singapore has to offer.

Having received queries from fellow Australians on the cost of living in Singapore, he was keen to provide a real-life example—a family of four, with both children attending international school.

The first order of business is rental and he opted for a 3-room condo unit which he estimated would average at about $6,000 a month, or $72,000 a year.

"That's a pretty fair price in today's market. It's not going to be right in the city but you're not living on the border of Malaysia either," the 36-year-old said.

Sending the kids to school won't be cheap either.

Jarrad averaged international school fees at about $48,000 per child, so that brings the yearly amount to $96,000 for this family.

Speaking with AsiaOne, Jarrad shared that expats tend to hesitate when it comes to public schools as there might be a desire to maintain continuity with the Australian education system.

So despite the significantly higher costs of international schools vis-a-vis public schools, many expat families end up opting for the former instead.

Jarrad went on to list the projected yearly costs of utilities ($12,000), transport ($1,200) and insurances ($12,000).

A few other items were added to the list and he ended up with an annual spending of between $215,000 and $220,000 for this case study.

This is before any travel expenses, mind you.

"We need to be able to save some money in Singapore as well because otherwise, how are we going to retire?" Jarrad asked rhetorically.

He added that the general rule of thumb is to save 20 per cent of one's gross income.

Working backwards, the financial planner came to the conclusion that this family of four has to earn between $320,000 and $335,000 a year.

In the comments section, some netizens seem to be in a state of disbelief at the numbers Jarrad had laid out.

One TikTok user even called out his calculations as "seriously wrong", specifically mentioning that setting aside $6,000 for rent is "ridiculous".

Jarrad replied that whatever that was shared in his TikTok video is a case study and should not be seen as a "one-size-fits-all" model.

Another commenter was simply shocked by the cost breakdown. "I'm just blown away that.. there's people living these kind of lifestyles. That kind of money is beyond extravagant."

    250324_expat_tiktok.jpg

    250324_expat1_tiktok.jpg PHOTOS: Screengrabs/TikTok/Australian.expat

However, one user who identified as a Singaporean said that they "sympathise with this", noting that a local with "150k household income [per annum] is already struggling, and that's without international school fees or rent".

To that, Jarrad replied that this "puts [things] into perspective, particularly the impact of inflation on Singapore households".

Another user agreed with Jarrad's cost-of-living breakdown, saying it was "very accurate". "Of course it will vary depending on your family needs. We spend more than double on groceries. It’s good that you included savings. I think some expats forget," the user added.

Jarrad told AsiaOne that he was surprised and thrilled at the number of views, 141,000 at the time of writing, his TikTok video has received.

He found it fascinating that there's a strong interest in the cost of living for expats in Singapore, adding: "I think the video struck a chord because it provides practical and valuable insights into an area that affects daily life and financial planning for expats."

Hong Kong has increased the income tax paid by anyone earning over $640k and above to 15%, but compared to Singapore, Hong Kong looks generous. In Singapore, income tax is 15% from $89k and 22% from $237k and above.

As the cost of living in Singapore rises, this increasingly matters. Last year's Mercer Cost of Living survey put Singapore in second place to Hong Kong as the most expensive city in the world for expats. In 2022, Hong Kong was still ranked first, but Singapore was ranked sixth.

Hong Kong has always been expensive. But the gap with Singapore is closing, and it's suddenly an issue. Hong Kong bankers say the island nation's cost of living is a key reason why they wouldn't countenance moving there now.

"It would take a really significant career opportunity to get me to Singapore," says a managing director on the trading floor at one European bank in Hong Kong. "The cost of living there is just too high, plus Hong Kong is where all the action is. Singapore is more boring - there's no real excitement there," he considers.

It's a perspective that's been voiced to eFinancialCareers before. In January 2023, Hong Kong bankers suggested to us that Singapore was "expensive and dull." This was after the pandemic, when Hong Kong bankers escaped strict COVID rules by moving to Singapore. Since then, many have moved back, and the cost of living in Singapore has risen further.

"The attraction of Singapore has died off," says another managing director with decades of experience on Hong Kong trading floors. "Anyone who wanted to leave has left, and it's no secret that Singapore has become quite expensive in terms of housing and taxes. Singapore's immigration rules there have also been tightened due to their own political issues, plus it's all small scale in Singapore and that's not everyone's cup of tea."

One Hong Kong equity strategist tells us that he too wouldn't go to Singapore now because it's "in a bubble." - "The cost of living is higher than it used to be in Singapore - you'll pay more there for accommodation and for schooling, so it's better to live in Hong Kong," he says.

Like the other financial services professionals, he also favours Hong Kong for its broader lifestyle. "I don't mind a two or three-day trip to Singapore for shopping and eating, but there's not much else to do there," he says. "In Hong Kong there are mountains, hiking, national parks, beaches and Shenzhen all a stone's throw away. I'd be bored stiff living in Singapore."

SINGAPORE – Former transport minister S. Iswaran was handed eight new charges in court on March 25.

These are under Section 165 of the Penal Code, which makes it an offence for public servants to accept gifts from someone involved with them in an official capacity.

When asked by District Judge Brenda Tan, Iswaran – who now faces 35 charges in total – said he pleaded not guilty to the additional charges.

On March 25, the Corrupt Practices Investigation Bureau (CPIB) said in a statement that Iswaran had allegedly obtained, as a public servant, valuables with a total value of about $18,956.94 from a Lum Kok Seng.

Iswaran had allegedly known him to be involved in business that had a connection with his official function as Minister for Transport.

These alleged offences were committed between November 2021 and November 2022.

According to charge sheets, the items include bottles of whisky, golf clubs and a Brompton bicycle that cost $7,907.50.

The business transacted involved a contract between Lum Chang Building Contractors and the Land Transport Authority for addition and alteration works to Tanah Merah MRT station and existing viaducts.

The website of Lum Chang, a property management, interior design and construction firm, lists a Mr Lum Kok Seng as its managing director.

The firm’s construction arm, Lum Chang Building Contractors, has taken on multibillion-dollar civil, building and infrastructural projects in Singapore, including being the main contractor for Bukit Panjang station along the Downtown Line.

Iswaran arrived in court on March 25 at about 8.20am with members from his legal team from Davinder Singh Chambers.

Speaking to the media gathered outside the court, he said: “Sorry you all had to get up so early this morning.”

As he walked towards the court trailed by members of the media, one of them tripped and fell. Iswaran helped him pick up his belongings.

Chief Prosecutor Tan Kiat Pheng told the court that the purpose of March 25’s hearing was to tender eight additional charges against Iswaran and transmit the new charges to the High Court.

Mr Navin Shanmugaraj Thevar, one of Iswaran’s lawyers, questioned why the new charges were tendered only now, and if the prosecution intended to file more charges against his client.

Mr Thevar said the prosecution recorded 36 cautioned statements from Iswaran in January 2024 but only handed the former minister 27 charges at his first court hearing on Jan 18.

“The eight new charges today were not part of the 36 (cautioned statements),” the defence lawyer added.

A cautioned statement sets out a notice for an accused person to provide his defence in response to an offence he is being charged with.

Mr Thevar added that the eight new charges related to matters that the CPIB had questioned Iswaran over in July and August 2023.

He said: “On March 16, three days before the criminal case disclosure conference (CCDC) at the High Court, CPIB called my client in and he was served eight new charges.”

During a CCDC, the prosecution and defence disclose information about the case to facilitate the trial process.

He added: “When Mr Iswaran asked CPIB when the charges would be brought in court, he was told a decision had not been made.”

Chief Prosecutor Tan said in response that all charges tendered against Iswaran were based on evidence uncovered by CPIB and they had been reviewed by the Attorney-General’s Chambers (AGC). He added that the State Courts was not the right forum for such issues and urged the defence to raise them in the High Court instead.

Iswaran, 61, was charged at the State Courts on Jan 18 and his case was later transferred to the High Court. A chambers hearing was fixed for April 2 for the prosecution and the defence to exchange information ahead of the trial.

Those who have ongoing High Court cases will have to return to the State Courts if additional charges are filed against them.

Iswaran initially faced 27 charges, including two for corruption.

The corruption charges relate to alleged bribes obtained from billionaire Ong Beng Seng as inducement for advancing the hotel and property tycoon’s business interests in relation to agreements between race promoter Singapore GP and the Singapore Tourism Board (STB).

Mr Ong, who is chairman of Singapore GP, is credited with bringing the Formula 1 Grand Prix to Singapore.

Iswaran initially faced 24 counts under Section 165. He is the first reported person to be charged under the section.

These charges are for allegedly obtaining, as a minister, items with a total value of more than $200,000 from Mr Ong between November 2015 and December 2021.

These items include tickets to the Singapore Grand Prix, football matches and musicals in Britain.

Iswaran was also handed a charge of obstructing the course of justice for allegedly making repayment of $5,700 in May 2023 for the cost of a business class flight ticket that he purportedly took in 2022 at Mr Ong’s expense.

Iswaran was elected in 1997 as an MP for West Coast GRC, where he served for 26 years. He was promoted to full minister in the Prime Minister’s Office in 2011.

He resigned from the People’s Action Party in January and stepped down as transport minister and West Coast GRC MP.

Following his court appearance on Jan 18, Iswaran issued a statement declaring his innocence and said he would focus on clearing his name. He was granted $800,000 bail.

He was allowed to leave Singapore from Feb 16 to March 4 to help his son settle in at a university in Melbourne.

The prosecution imposed several conditions to this application, including additional $500,000 bail and having to provide the investigation officer with his itinerary and his address overseas.

ST had reported that during his trip, Iswaran was admitted to private hospital Cabrini Malvern for respiratory illness.

He was advised by his doctor not to travel for 12 days following his discharge from the hospital in Melbourne on March 5.

He returned to Singapore and surrendered his passport to the authorities, the AGC said on March 20.

On Feb 5, Minister-in-charge of Trade Relations Grace Fu told Parliament that STB was conducting an audit of the 2022 edition of the Formula One Singapore Grand Prix, following allegations of corruption against Iswaran.

She said that to safeguard Singapore’s interests, the Ministry of Trade and Industry was also reviewing the terms of the deal between STB and Singapore GP to organise the F1 night race here.

For each corruption charge, Iswaran can be fined up to $100,000, jailed for up to seven years, or both.

He can be fined, jailed for up to two years, or both, for obtaining valuable items from someone he had business dealings with as a public servant.

For obstructing the course of justice, he can be jailed for up to seven years, fined, or both.

A Singaporean woman featured in an 8world News video and report has shared her experience on buying a house in Johor Bahru (JB) after not being able to in Singapore.

As a 27-year-old single woman, business owner Kylie did not meet the requirements to apply for a HDB flat in Singapore.

Nonetheless hoping to have a place of her own, she bought a 3-bedroom and 3-bathroom apartment in JB for S$200,000, which she says is “much cheaper”.

Started her own business at 18

According to 8world News, Kylie started her own online marketing company at the age of 18.

Now 27, she has also opened a new online store UPawsion for pet supplies.

Since her career as a business owner has just taken off, Kylie doesn’t have the financial stability to buy a private property in Singapore.

Purchased her apartment in JB last year

As she’s also single, Kylie is unable to meet the requirements under the eligibility criteria to apply for public housing in Singapore.

Wanting her own space away from her parents, she decided to take a chance and buy her own home in JB.

Kylie did her homework and purchased an apartment in Country Garden Danga Bay, JB for S$200,000 last year.

    kylie-apartment-balcony.jpg

She paid a down payment of roughly S$50,000, and currently pays more than S$1,000 in monthly payments and apartment management fees.

Kylie knew investing in the rest estate market in JB was risky, so she made it a point to get a feel of the neighbourhood before she made her decision.

“I also have friends who rent a house here, so before buying a house I stayed with them for a few days,” she told 8world in Mandarin.

    Travels to Singapore frequently

Kylie shared with 8world that her home in JB is not far from her parents’ home in Singapore, where she stays when she’s back in town.

Although the drive to her parents’ place takes about 40 minutes to an hour, Kylie doesn’t find the journey troublesome.

    jb-sg.jpg

    Source: Google Maps

As a business owner, she’s able to tailor her working hours to suit her lifestyle, choosing to travel between Singapore and JB during off-peak hours to avoid the heavy traffic.

Living in her own home has granted her independence

Kylie saw the opportunity to live away from her parents as a “rite of passage” to find her own independence.

She told 8world that when she lived with her parents, many decisions were made for her.

Now, Kylie has learnt to live life by her rules, and discovered the meaning of the term “less is more”.

“Because I travel frequently between Singapore and Malaysia, my room in JB has very little things,” she shared.

“I also want to make my life simpler, with the little things I have, I don’t have to think too much.”

She also claims that having her own space calms her down when she is alone.

“It can be quite lonely on this entrepreneurial journey, so if I have this place and opportunity where I can better sort out my emotions and thoughts. It is actually a big plus for me.”

Has assimilated into her life in JB

After living in JB for roughly five months, Kylie told 8world that she doesn’t feel lonely as she has many friends there with whom she meets for dinner and a catch-up.

Her like-minded friends also help her spread the word about her business.

“I am a content creator…so I also help her to promote her products in my videos or Instagram videos,” one friend told 8world.

“We are not just friends, we work hard for our careers together.”

Kylie also visits local shops to mingle with other business owners, learning from local merchants and inspecting the JB market.

She plans to expand her business to Malaysia and says buying her home in JB was “fate”.

“Looking back at my life, I realised that I do overthink sometimes, and I missed a lot of opportunities,” she shared.

“So this time, buying this house, also symbolises my change.”

In the past week, we’ve seen the local news flood with Taylor Swift-related content. Most of the propaganda comes in the form of the government trying to convince us that the exclusive deal benefits Singapore.

If you have been out of the loop, Thailand’s prime minister shared last month that Swift’s concert promoter AEG had informed him that the Singaporean government offered subsidies of US$2m-$3m (£1.6m-£2.4m) a show as part of an exclusivity agreement.

The Singapore government has responded that the numbers are inflated but the deal is real.

“[Our] agencies negotiated an arrangement with her to come to Singapore and perform and to make Singapore her only stop in south-east Asia. It has turned out to be a very successful arrangement. I don’t see that as being unfriendly.”

PM Lee at a press conference in Melbourne

Why are they so secretive about the deal?

Why can’t they tell us how much they spent? Is it because they have something to hide? They claim that this deal would boost tourism in Singapore and in turn our economy. However, while it is true that foreigners did come in just for the concert, how much of their money is really going to Singapore?

How many of them used a foreign airline (e.g. Thai Airways or Cebu Pacific)? How many patronized brands owned by foreigners (e.g. Hilton)?

Some businesses even shared that their businesses declined because of Taylor Swift’s concerts!

It was even reported on CNA that there was a fall in some business. This is especially for those located around the National Stadium, as non-concert goers avoid that area to avoid the crowd.

Ji Xian Seafood and Hong Kong Dim Sum Express at Kallang Wave Mall are some examples. They reportedly saw a sharp 80 per cent fall in business. One staff member at the dim sum restaurant shared with TODAY that many regular customers cancelled bookings upon hearing about the concert.

A traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) clinic at the mall, Kin Teck Tong TCM Clinic, also experienced a 50 per cent fall in appointments over the past week. Darts and karaoke bar Good Cheer at Stadium, similarly saw patronage fall by about 40-50%.

Dear Singapore government, did you have to do this? Did you think we’d be fine? Still got scars on our backs from your knives.
