- Findings announced Oct 3, 2026 by Health Minister Ong Ye Kung
🧂 Sodium Consumption — Up Sharply
- 95% exceeded daily recommended limit (up from 88% in 2019)
- Average daily intake: 4,000 mg (↑ from 3,480 mg in 2019)
- Recommended limit: 2,000 mg/day = ~1 tsp salt → current intake is double
- Key sources: salt & sauces added during cooking; restaurant dishes
- Popular dishes’ median sodium ↑ ~10% since 2023
- Health risk: raises blood pressure → higher heart disease & stroke risk
- Policy update: Mandatory Nutri-Grade labelling & ad bans extended to salt, sauces, seasonings, instant noodles, cooking oils → delayed from mid-2027 to 2028 to give businesses time to reformulate
🔥 Calorie Intake — Also Rising
- Mean daily calories: 2,460 kcal (↑ from 2,360 kcal in 2019)
- 57% exceeded recommended intake (after accounting for physical activity)
- Just +100 kcal/day surplus = ~5 kg weight gain/year → higher obesity & heart disease risk
- Eating out trend:
- 7 in 10 eat out ≥ once/day (↑ from 6 in 10 in 2019)
- Frequency: 9 times/week (↑ from 8 in 2019)
- Those eating out ≥2 times/day consumed more calories, saturated fat & sodium
📈 Calorie jumps in popular dishes:

Chicken rice 557 kcal 646 kcal +89 kcal
Nasi biryani 970 kcal 1,310 kcal +340 kcal
Char kway teow 748 kcal 989 kcal +241 kcal
✅ Good News: Sugar Intake Down
- Daily total sugar: 48 g (↓ from 60 g in 2018) → down ~2.5 tsp/day
- 79% within recommended limit (≤50 g/day / 10 tsp) — up from 61% in 2019
- Driven by shift to lower-sugar drinks & industry reformulation → "taste buds are changing"
🏃 Physical Activity
- Sufficient total activity: 87.3% (↑ from 84.7% in 2024) ✅
- BUT only 37.6% meet muscle-strengthening targets — unchanged since 2020 ⚠️
- Health screening participation also increased
Bottom line: More eating out = more sodium & calories, but sugar is going down. Policies to help will kick in by 2028.
