Singapore and Indonesia have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to cooperate on nuclear security, radiation protection, and emergency preparedness. The agreement was signed on June 30, 2026, in Jakarta by Benjamin Koh, Chief Executive of Singapore's National Environment Agency (NEA), and Zainal Arifin, Acting Chairman of Indonesia’s Nuclear Energy Regulatory Agency (BAPETEN).
### Key Pillars of the Partnership
| Focus Area | Details |
|---|---|
| **Operational Security** | Sharing knowledge on nuclear security policies to safeguard facilities from external threats or malicious acts. |
| **Public Safety & Health** | Collaborating on radiation protection standards across sectors, including healthcare applications. |
| **Emergency Readiness** | Developing joint frameworks for regional radiation monitoring and collective response plans for radiological emergencies. |
| **Knowledge Exchange** | Conducting technical meetings, joint training programs, research partnerships, and personnel exchanges. |
### Strategic Context for Both Nations
* **Singapore's Planning:**
Singapore is currently evaluating the feasibility of nuclear energy as a potential option for its long-term future energy mix. As part of this preparation, Singapore is scheduled to undergo an evaluation by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) in 2027 to assess its readiness to make an informed decision on deploying nuclear power.
* **Indonesia's Nuclear Path:**
Having started its nuclear energy research earlier, Indonesia is moving forward with plans to establish 500 megawatts (MW) of nuclear capacity by the early 2030s.
### Broader Environmental Cooperation
This nuclear agreement follows a separate bilateral environmental pact signed on June 29, 2026, by Singapore's Minister for Sustainability and the Environment, Grace Fu, and Indonesia's Minister of Environment, Mohammad Jumhur Hidayat. That agreement focuses on broader regional challenges, including transboundary pollution, climate change, and managing the prolonged impacts of the
El Niño weather phenomenon.
