    • Man admits posting fake bomb message on Instagram, delaying three flights at Changi Airport   https://www.channelnewsasia.com/singapore/man-fake-bomb-scoot-instastory-delay-6161356?cid=internal_sharetool_androidphone_04062026_cna     20‑year‑old Singaporean pleads guilty to fake bomb post on Instagram; 3 Scoot flights delayed, airline loses nearly S$2,000   Rykes Tan Zhi Kai, now 20, pleaded guilty in court on 4 June 2026 to one charge of communicating false information about a harmful thing, an offence that carries up to 7 years’ jail, a S$50,000 fine, or both. The incident took place on 7‑8 June 2025, when he was 19 years old, at Changi Airport Terminal 1.   What happened   - Tan was waiting to board Scoot flight TR876 to Taipei. At about 11:55 pm, he took a selfie with a Scoot Boeing 787 Dreamliner in the background and posted it to his private Instagram Story (only 71 followers), with the caption: “Im [sic] about to bomb this plane” — plus a bomb emoji. He later told police it was meant as a joke. - When a friend messaged him asking about the post, Tan replied: “This is automated message. Tan Zhi Kai, Rykes have successfully bombed the plane and is unable to contact you from now onwards.” He said this was also a joke, intended to mean he had “died” in the imaginary explosion. - Around 1:00 am, police received an anonymous tip‑off. Authorities immediately launched enhanced security checks for all Scoot Dreamliner flights scheduled to leave between 12:10 am and 1:50 am. - Three flights were affected: - TR138 → Tianjin (original dep: 1:30 am → departed ~3:00 am) - TR186 → Qingdao (original dep: 1:45 am → departed ~3:00 am) - TR720 → Athens (original dep: 1:50 am → departed ~3:00 am) - Each was delayed by over an hour; Scoot recorded operational losses of S$1,946 (≈US$1,516) from rescheduling and extra security work. - By the time police acted, Tan had already boarded TR876 and left Singapore. He was arrested on 11 June 2025 upon returning from Taipei, and later fully reimbursed the airline.   Court proceedings   - The prosecution, led by Deputy Public Prosecutor Xu Sijia, emphasized that Changi Airport is “critical public infrastructure used daily by thousands”, and such hoaxes disrupt operations, waste resources, and endanger public confidence — calling for strong deterrence. They asked the court to prepare both probation and reformative training suitability reports, with sentencing deferred until they are ready. - Tan’s lawyer, Mr Chen Yongxin, argued against ordering a reformative training report, saying his client was young, had no prior record, acted out of immaturity, and had taken responsibility early. The judge nevertheless directed that both reports be done before sentencing. - Tan remains out on bail and will return to court later for mitigation and final sentencing.   Legal note   Under Singapore’s law, making or spreading false threats — even on private social media, even as “jokes” — is a serious offence, treated strictly because of the major disruption and cost it causes to transport, security, and the public.
