She cannot be named due to a gag order protecting the identity of the victim.
Inappropriate relationship
According to CNA, the woman, now 35, was the boy's mathematics teacher in primary five and six from 2016 to 2017.
After the victim graduated from primary school, he kept in touch with his former teacher via WhatsApp.
The pair initially texted whenever he needed help with his secondary school homework, but their conversation later involved talking about daily life when the teenager was in secondary one.
They also began meeting up in person and grew closer.
In February 2019, when the victim was in secondary two, the pair entered into a romantic relationship despite the teacher knowing it was wrong to do so.
She was 28 while he was 13.
She also gave the victim money for food and transportation when he asked for it.
On multiple occasions between February and October that year, the woman would pick the then 13-year-old teenager up in her car and drive to the seventh floor of a multi-storey carpark near his house.
After parking the car, the pair hugged and kissed each other, among other intimate acts.
They would also do the same near a staircase landing at the carpark, reported The Straits Times.
Sexual acts
Some time between November and December 2019, when the teenager was 14 years old, the pair met in the woman's car that was parked in a secluded spot at the carpark.
They hugged and kissed each other again, before the woman performed a sexual act on the boy with their clothes off.
This occurred on several other occasions.
Stalking
In July 2023, the victim decided to end the relationship.
He insisted on doing so despite the accused crying and saying she still loved him, then told her not to contact him before blocking her on social media.
Thereafter, the woman began stalking the victim and harassed him by calling his phone 25 times and sending him 17 emails.
She claimed that he had hurt and "ruined her" emotionally and mentally and that she hoped to "die soon".
She also told the victim she was unhappy about his new relationship, that his photo was still on her wallpaper and that she wanted to smell him and get back together with him.
The victim then filed a police report against her for stalking.
She was arrested on Mar. 7, 2024.
The Ministry of Education (MOE) said that the woman had been suspended from duty as an educator since March 2024 and was no longer teaching in any school, according to ST.
The ministry added that it would take further disciplinary action once court proceedings have concluded.
Court hearing
At the sentencing on Mar. 26, the accused pleaded guilty to two charges, one for sexual penetration of a minor and one for committing an indecent act with a child.
Two similar charges were taken into consideration.
The prosecution sought 22 to 26 months' imprisonment for the woman's crimes, noting that the sex acts occurred multiple times and that she had harassed the victim.
Despite the fact that the woman was no longer the victim's teacher at the time of the offence, it was still relevant that she was his former teacher, said the prosecution.
The accused's lawyer asked for 12 to 13 months' jail instead, citing his client's remorse.
However, the judge noted that the accused had abused the trust the victim placed in her, as, while not responsible for the teenager, she continued to care for him by helping him with homework and providing food and transport money.
Nonetheless, she said there appears to have been a "genuine romantic relationship" and that the accused has a low risk of reoffending as she is not a serial offender targeting minors.
The woman was then sentenced to a year and 10 months in jail.
For performing a sexual act on an underage boy, an offender can be jailed for up to 10 years and fined.
For performing an indecent act on a minor, an offender can be jailed for up to five years and fined up to S$10,000.
