A delivery rider insisted on cycling in a pedestrian-only zone and assaulted two Land Transport Authority (LTA) officers and two auxiliary police officers after being told to dismount.
He was sentenced to 16 weeks’ jail on Thursday (Sep 4), reported Shin Min Daily News.
The incident happened on July 30 last year at about 7.16 pm, along the public walkway between Blocks 209 and 210 of Upper Changi Road.
The accused, 29-year-old Abdul Saiyakar, was a food delivery rider at the time. He faced 12 charges, including using criminal force against public servants, voluntarily causing hurt, and offences under the Protection from Harassment Act. Six charges were proceeded with, while the rest were considered during sentencing.
Court documents revealed that the walkway was designated as a pedestrian-only zone, where cycling and the use of personal mobility devices were prohibited.
On the day of the incident, LTA officers and auxiliary police officers were carrying out enforcement duties at the walkway, advising members of the public to dismount and push their bicycles or mobility devices.
The accused was riding his bicycle to collect food and insisted on cycling through the pedestrian zone despite being told to dismount. When an LTA officer held onto his bicycle handlebars to stop him, the accused got off and shoved the officer.
When another LTA officer came to assist, the accused clashed with him as well. He shouted at the second officer, who grabbed his right hand, and the accused responded by pushing the officer’s chest with his left hand.
The officers later took him aside to calm him down, but the accused still attempted to cycle away. In the process, his bicycle handlebars struck the hands of two auxiliary police officers, and the front wheel grazed the left shin of one of them.
