Do you need to speak the language in order to do translation?   Were there any records or proof that a Chinese and an Indian were able to successfully transition to be a translator with no training?   I recall my mother was a translator for Japanese fishermen caught fishing illegally in Northern Australia. But I have never heard her speaking for long stretches in Nihongo. I wonder if there is any truth to the translation story.   Was it that simple? Or were there more?
