The Chinese leader is scheduled to arrive in Malaysia on April 15 for a 3-day visit, according to two Malaysian government sources.
“Xi’s visit will be important in signalling how China is prepared to move forward with regional partners to uphold economic stability,” said Angeline Tan, an analyst with the Institute of Strategic and International Studies (Isis) Malaysia.
According to reports, Chinese President Xi Jinping is expected to visit three Southeast Asian countries in April: Malaysia, Vietnam, and Cambodia.
The South China Morning Post reported on March 31, citing diplomatic sources, that Xi may depart in mid-April and is scheduled to stay in Malaysia for three days. One source said that this visit would build on the productive meeting between Xi and Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar in Beijing last November. This visit is expected to enhance bilateral relations between China and Malaysia.
Malaysia is the ASEAN chair this year, and Xi's Southeast Asia trip will be his first overseas visit in 2025. His last visit to Southeast Asia was in December 2023 when he visited Vietnam. According to the Vietnamese government’s website, Vietnam is China’s largest trade partner in ASEAN and the fifth-largest in the world.
