What does Singapore need more than anything right now? Guaranteeing their supply of Chinese New Year snacks, apparently.

Anxious souls fearing they might miss their Bak Kwa fix succeeded spectacularly today in crashing the site of its popular supplier, Lim Chee Guan, after the snack became available for pre-order.

The barbecued pork jerky supplier, which has been in business since the 1930s, said today its site would be down all day after being overwhelmed by orders. But not to worry: Much jerky remains for the chewing.

“Due to the overwhelming response, our pre-order site is still down. Rest assured that the stock is still available, we are working hard to get the site back online again. We apologized for any inconvenience caused,” the company said. Chinese New Year celebrations begin Feb. 12.

The company, known for drawing long lines outside its store ahead of festivities, had moved all orders online yesterday to prevent crowding in these times of pandemic.

The site was bombarded with traffic and began choking at 10:30am yesterday, about half an hour after it went live. Some users complained that their orders could not get through as they were unable to select delivery dates or times.

Lim Chee Guan did not immediately respond to an email requesting comment.

Long queues form annually outside its flagship store in Chinatown to get ahold of the top-selling pork jerky. It has four outlets across the country.

Being a famous brand in Singapore, some customers did not expect the company to be so ill-prepared.

“Haha should have prepped the website for such expected overwhelming response before you guys decided to announce,” a Joycelyn Ng wrote

“Tried many times can’t login.. think u better partner with third party platforms to handle such purchases,” Facebook user SY Yuan wrote.
